Peter Noble
Peter would have been 80 today, one of my favourite players who could play anywhere and give 100 per cent and a gentleman...

He'd have graced today's team. Loved buying things from his market stall when He'd retired.

Perhaps fitting we should be playing in Sunderland next weekend. The north-east has provided us with many players throughout our history.
Peter Noble is truly a Burnley legend.

Re: Peter Noble
Even when he was long retired with dodgy knees, he played in that pre-Sherpa Van Wrmbley Final for the Burnley Old Boys and went into tackles like a man possessed.
Always totally committed to the cause. Bought my first Burnley shirt from him.

I always remember that match more than the final afterwards. Who was the huge guy we had in goal ?

Re: Peter Noble
I was brought up in Norfolk but had one or two trips to visit my grandparents in Nelson each year. I think it was Easter 77, aged 11 when I asked Mum and Dad (known on here as Spades and Mr Spades) whether - instead of an Easter Egg - I could have a claret/blue tracksuit that year... They agreed, and as there was no home match that week, Dad said he'd take me to watch the Clarets training. He rang the club, spoke to a nice chap who said it would be fine. Dad asked his name (in case anyone challenged us when we got there). The reply? "Harry Potts"! So, the following morning, off we went down to Gawthorpe to watch the Clarets train. Dad and I were the only people there, with me proudly sporting my new tracksuit. After the session, Harry brought the lads over and they made a fuss of me - pretending to admire the tracksuit. They asked me who my favourite player was - I quickly answered "Peter Noble" - and Peter stepped forward and we had a chat about football. He asked me which position I played and when I said "goalkeeper", he laughed and offered to take a penalty against me! I was so nervous and a bit star-struck, to say the least - and, needless to say it flashed past me before I could blink - but what a day... It was brilliant for an 11-year-old! I suspect things may have changed a bit since then

Hi !aiboforceN,
Thank you very much for the story. When you're, ehm, less young, like me, you tend to think things were better "back then". The game we love has changed so much and players in the top leagues are paid enormous sums compared, above all, to ordinary folk and also to players of Peter Noble's era.
I don't recall your Dad posting on here but your Mum was cannot be forgotten. May I take advantage of this thread to express my condolences however belated. I can't recall precisely when your Mum passed away (last year I think).
She was greatly respected and sorely missed.
I believe I can safely say she was appreciated by all us: an erudite and humble lady who provided intelligent insights into all manner of subjects. She was an excellent "listener" and would always be there when a kind word was required.

Brilliant player for the Clarets. He didn't play too badly for Swindon either unfortunately against us.Clive 1960 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2024 8:22 amPeter would have been 80 today, one of my favourite players who could play anywhere and give 100 per cent and a gentleman...

Loved everything about Uwe as a Burnley player - this bullet diving header in a 4-1 win over Newcastle is one of my all-time favourites.

Absolute class both as a player and as a bloke. Loved visiting his stall to buy trainers, boots or a subbuteo team. I was always in awe of being served by one of my heroes and had the pleasure of meeting him a few times when I worked at the Turf mid 90s. There is only one UWE

Re: Peter Noble
Absolutely fantastic player. Lovely man too.
Depending on which day you catch me, it’s either Uwe, or Billy Hamilton that’s gets my vote as my favourite ever claret.
Today, it’s the wonderful Peter Noble.

Remember being at the game in 1974 as a young lad
Peter Noble 4 Norwich 4 , think a couple were pens and Norwich were a decent side with Ted Mcdougall , Martin Peters , Suggett , Phil Bowyer and managed by one John Bond.
Was thinking what will we do when Uwe isn't playing anymore.

Re: Peter Noble
Didn't matter where he lined up on the pitch, full-back, midfield, a number 8 or a number 9, Uwe always looked to score. As natural an instinctive goalscorer, as I've seen play for us.
Re: Peter Noble
What a star he was and what a brilliant set of memories. Thanks all. I was there for the 4-4 and also when he equalised at Everton on Good Friday to quieten down Bob Latchford and others back in 1975.Andingle wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2024 6:34 pmRemember being at the game in 1974 as a young lad

Re: Peter Noble
It was November in the following season. I think Taff got the other goal and Uwe a hat-trick. That diving header was from a sweeping move that sent Brenno bombing down the wing in front of the Longside before smashing over a cross that Peter ran on to with a horizontal diving header from near the penalty spot.Clive 1960 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2024 2:58 amwas that the game just after they beat us in the semi final..

Re: Peter Noble
When Peter had his stall in Burnley market hall I was a regular visitor.
One day while playing the original Trivial pursuit I came across a card where Peter was the answer ( who held the record for scoring most consecutive penalties, which if memory serves was 28 ?). So I got the card framed in a Perspex frame for him and took it in to him one Saturday morning.
Needless to say he couldn't believe it and was more than happy, in fact it sat at the till side for a number of years!

I too had a Harry Potts experience!
We were on holiday in Scotland and on the way back south. As a surprise, my dad drove to Burnley, so I could see the ground. As we stood outside out of the players entrance comes Harry Potts. He asks my dad why we were there, as it was obvious we were taking in the ground view.
My dad said I was a fan from Reading and that this was my treat, to see Turf Moor.
Harry said "Would you like to see inside?"
He took me in showed me inside the old stand, pre Bob Lord. Then the boot room. Then he bumped into the groundsman. Explained that he had to go but for him to show me around and the pitch.
I stood on the Bee Hole End for the first time and gazed in amazement.
Harry Potts number 1.

I don't know if it was his first visit to Turf Moor, but I recall him as a Swindon player and he basically ran the game. Did for them what Collins did for us, but more.
I was made up when we signed him.

I remember doing a charity quiz once and I asked that question regarding how many successful penalty kicks he had scored. I got loads of answer sheets back many of them with the correct number (28) and lots saying 27.
We used to bump into Peter at Churchills bar on a Saturday evening so I explained and asked him what was the correct answer. He (laughingly) played hell with me and said he had never been so busy at his shop on Burnley market. Not with sales but people trying to get the answer to my quiz.
Seriously though he was one of the Burnley greats and a fully committed player throughout his career.
