Stadium Announcer - Lack of awareness

Post by dandeclaret » Mon Sep 02, 2024 12:28 pm

I don't know if this is a new thing or not, but I was very surprised at the stadium announcers complete lack of awareness of the situation and noise in the ground - especially pre match.

A few times, noise was building, and he decided that was the exact time that He should make some incredibly loud, incredibly dull announcement.

Examples - Burney team heading towards the tunnel after the warm up pre game, Longside and Cricket field fans starting to make noise - SA - Announcement on if you feel unsafe text blah to code blah blah blah, Turf moor is an inclusive blah blah blah, safe for everyone. Took all of the energy out of the crowd.

Similarly, team heading out....noise building nicely - don't need some loud, boring announcement on welcome to the East Lancs Derby (Does anybody in the ground actually call it the East Lancs derby - the announcer did, about 30 times) - just let the noise build.

Be aware of what's happening, don't just follow a script on what to announce and when.

Agree 100pc. There has been previous discussion on here about Mr Shouty and his tinpot "LETS HEAR IT FOR BURN_LEEEEE !!" bellowing (irrespective of the surrounding atmosphere or context).
Needs binning. It's football not CBeebies.

Come on Dan, be fair.

The atmosphere always ramps up tenfold when the “let’s hear it for BURNLEY” announcement is given, on each of the multiple occasions!

There were several times last season where I could quite cheerfully have strangled him.
Takes all the spontaneity out of it, like when they insist on playing music at the end of a game when all the average fan wants to do is cheer and celebrate (a win).

I didn’t see the players leaving their warm ups but I did have the same thoughts before the teams came out.
There was a real atmosphere building between the two sets of fans.
Not heard that for a while.

I thought the same on Saturday. I get that there's certain announcements they need/want to make but you know when the players are heading back in after warm-up (it's pretty much the same time every match) so just exercise some common sense.

He’s absolutely abysmal. Understandable as he’s come from rugby where they need someone to tell them to create an atmosphere.

Did you hear Ian Bannister’s replacement reading out the half time scores? Sounded like a hungover teenager who’d just been woken up.

Playing some weird deafening music as they were walking out killed the atmosphere. Why are they playing random songs that are different every game as we walk out at full blast? It ruins the atmosphere every game.

It was really noticeable that they killed the atmosphere dead with the Prodigy blasting after it had built up naturally just before and as the players came out of the tunnel. I'm not sure who the music is for, players or fans, but it didn't work on Saturday. I don't normally comment on this stuff, but they really don't get this kind of thing at all

The announcer is dreadful with his bellowing of Burnley capping it.

I always wonder whether he took the moment to read out the teams last year on instruction when Dyche came out. Mind you, he ignored Scott Parker’s first entrance before the Cardiff game.

Ball might be banging on about his drum soon but our club are brilliant at killing the atmosphere.

Agreed. And he shouts too much. Gets on my nerves

As for the entrance music. The Prodigy are one of my favourite bands, but in no way should this be used for walk on music. Get it binned off now

A Colin Crompton Wheeltappers and Shunters club style announcement would be brilliant, the bell, the dull Lancashire drawl would be unique., ladies and gentlemen, we've had a meeting of the committee and decided the team is..... A real antidote to the tedious razzmatazz. 🤣

I imagine he may have been told to deliver that message about the anti-harassment etc initiative close to ko and so didn't really have much option.

I didn't find him particularly loud but maybe they have the speakers on lower for us old fogeys in he Bob Lord? ;)

The safety one was t close to kick off. It was when the teams was heading off post warm up…. Probably 10-15 minutes before the kick off, when there’s a natural lull in atmosphere.

We’ve always thought even the music or the announcer harping on before the teams come out is far too loud. It’s so annoying when you’re trying to have a conversation with other people that sit near to you. It was our first home game so it’s nice to catch up with others you haven't seen for a few months, it was almost impossible trying to work out what’s being said.

its not, its a dozen or so people on a message board, i'm sure there are more people that it annoys on matchdays who then realise they are there to watch a football match and it has no impact on their enjoyment of that.

Could have Dale Winton reading the teams out for me, and i still wouldn't care less. its literally something that doesnt matter.

i'm just glad we didnt lose saturday, and this is the level of moaning that we have today, could have been a lot lot worse

Would people prefer a European style announcer where they only say the player's first name and get the crowd to shou=t the surname back at them?

The Turf guy feels almost understated by comparison

The announcer kills the atmosphere as does the loud and dumb entry music. It’s now more embarrassing than Watford’s.

Not moaning, just an observation, and one that's easy to fix.

They talk on mission to Burnley about lack of atmosphere, and having observed yesterday things that happened that killed the atmosphere when it was building, it felt useful to share, as it's highly likely the club read this board.

If you don't observe such things, that's fine.

The Euro 96 semi final always comes to mind with stuff like this.

Starting the first couple of bars of the national anthem and then letting the crowd take over was perfect, in a lesser game it wouldn't have had the same effect.

The same can be said on Saturday, read the room (or the game) and act accordingly.

One of the greatest pieces of athletics commentary was in the1996 Atlanta Olympics. Michael Johnson just smashed the 200m world record and as the race finished, David Coleman stayed silent for a number of seconds, not because he couldn't think of what to say, but because the TV viewers deserved to hear the crowd reaction, which was deafening.

Sometimes it is far better to say nothing, than to feel the need to say something pointless.

I honestly wouldn't know who I have come to watch until Mr Shouty bellows BURNLEEEEE, so I thank him for that.

Now if I may ask him to turn the volume down at half time so that fellow supporters around me could have a little discussion about the events of the first 45 minutes (selfish, I know).
I don't know know about the rest of the stands, but the speakers in the Jimmy Mac have gone from barely audible to an ear shattering racket.

I'm not sure anyone is moaning, just more or less stating the overbearing din from the speakers all around the ground that drowns the noise from the crowd as the players enter the field.
Add that to the incessant ramblings from Mr Shouty, especially at half time when some of us would like to get a word in edge ways.

I actually noticed they didn’t play any walkout music until both sets of players were well onto the pitch. As others have said the atmosphere was building naturally and this lull helped with fans responding and then it killed it completely the with prodigy track.

Shows the club are experimenting though.

Many clubs have ‘anthems’ or tracks for which the fans have chants for - I don’t think we play any song linked to our club do we?

Speaking of 'anthems' does anyone know the words to a new-ish song currently being sung from the cricket field stand.
I can't make it out too well from the Jimmy Mac stand but it still sounds infinitely better than the tired old No Nay Never.

He is dreadful and needs replacing, but it's not going to happen, the Americans will love him.

One of the only things I love about going to Anfield is hearing their announcer. His voice and delivery are brilliant, understated and no shouting.

George Sephton, The Voice of Anfield. He's the only stadium announcer that has stuck with me. I remember his voice from when we played there in the FA Cup replay in the mid 90s. It was calm, dignified and carried a real gravitas as it echoed around Anfield. Added to the experience immensely. I'll never forget it.

George is 78 now and has been doing the announcing at Anfield since 1971. He's perfect; he doesn't shout and scream but gets the correct information out in the correct manner. Apparently the announcer at Brentford is even longer serving.

In need of a proper review of his presentation.
A good announcer does not try to talk over a full stadium.
He needs taking in hand and led out of the door back to darts commentary or bingo calling.
He is so bad I despair at times , sorry mate it is leave or Pacey sends you to Gala or a proper training course at Nelson College.

It's crazy how we are no longer able to have a half-time debrief due to the volume.

I understand the content ie interview with Chris Pearce/ht entertainment is catering to differences but the volume is dictatorial. The cynic in me thinks it's a ploy to drive people down to the concourses and spend money.

Feel bad bagging on the fella when so many already have but surely someone could find him a short course in how to do conduct interviews?

You mean reading out the achievements of a player whilst playing for other clubs they played for, then asking that player what their greatest achievements were whilst playing for those other clubs, isn’t the way to do it? :o

Yes that could be the one. 👍
Staying down forever,
Is what the b******* said.
In 1987, they said our club was dead.

We won the league at Ewood,
Now everywhere we go.
We sing this song forever,
To let the b******* know.

Allez allez allez

I think we may have to learn sign language so we can have a half time chat.

As Dan says, his *announcements* kill the mood because of their volume, timing and content.
We appreciate that he's reading from a script, but the 'messages' are robotic and counter-productive.
As the atmosphere began building nicely, we didn't need yet another pompous lecture from ALK's 'operational handbook' about how not to run a football club. The oft-discussed drummer would have been less intrusive.
Hopefully, someone at the next FAB meeting raises the issue, as there is no other conduit by which to reach Pace & Co.
