I guess the first question is how often do you play and what is your handicap if you have one ?

I've seen so many people get caught in the trap of spending way too much money on clubs before they have needed to

For golf clothing I would suggest Druids Golf. On line shop and the gear is better than some "name brands".

For Clubs etc Clubhouse Golf on line are good and their prices are reasonable.

When I don't duff it, I hit my 2003 Titleist 983k Driver for £30 off ebay just as far/further than my mates that play with a brand spanking new £600 Ping G430 max driver.

Same story with my Ping Eye 2 irons... If you're good and need an extra few percent, go for it, but unless you're playing with hickories or whatever, that cost is probably gonna better be put into range/round time & lessons.

Golfclubs4cash is a pretty decent site though, along with eBay/marketplace if you know what you need!

How much do you want to pay ?

EBay has lots of great deals on second hand clubs - if you go for something like Ping you can also make sure you check the serial number so that they are not fake. Some of the other major makes are harder to check and there’s lots of fake clubs about unfortunately.

Ping clubs are great so plenty of choice at great prices as long as you are not looking for the most recent model (they change them nearly every year though). You can do the same serial checks for Ping drivers, woods and irons…and also Ping putters (I have a Ping Ancer putter that I don’t use anymore if you are interested ?)

If you don’t want to do eBay then go to one of the local golf clubs like Clitheroe, Burnley or Accrington. Ask about their used sets - again you can get a lot of money knocked off and you know they are genuine clubs as they are often part exchanged by members buying new sets. Particularly good for drivers as you nortoriously get members with too much cash paying £400 for a new driver only to realise it’s the clubs fault (not their swing of course) and sell them back to the club and buy another !!

At most of our local golf clubs now you can get fitted for clubs - used or new. They have the tracing / tracking machines which analyse your swing so you can see which type of clubs suit your swing the best - again great for drivers but also really useful for choosing your irons.

If you are looking for a new set of irons these days you won’t have much change left out of a grand. And your drivers / woods are going to set you back another £500 at least. So all depends what your budget is.

Going back to eBay lad who I play with got a set of used Ping irons for just over a hundred quid and they were in great condition. He was getting them as a second set for himself.

Clubhouse golf is usually very competitive on price, and free delivery on orders over £30. I’ve had some items from druids golf and found they’re not as good quality wise than better known brands(especially the zips)
Have a look on golf bidder, there are good savings to be made on used clubs, many of them ex demo and clubs only used for a few rounds, I’ve had a set of irons and a driver off there.
Best advice I can give you tho is to get fitted for clubs, it may cost you slightly more up front, but will save you from buying clubs that don’t suit your game or skill level.

Be careful there are lots of fakes on the market. If you are serious about your golf I suggest a club fitting. If you are just playing for fun then not necessary. All the main brands are vey good and not much to choose between them.

I buy clubs off e bay quite a bit, if I like them I keep them, if not I just put them back on.

I’ve ended up with a set I’m really happy with plus a few spares to swap out depending on course etc..

Price of golf clubs now is ridiculous £500 for a driver, £1,200 for irons , £400 putter , or go second hand , many golf shops have a decent selection and you can get free advice.

First thing I would advise is get measured at a good shop, one that has a simulator that can give the shop/advisor an idea what you need & range that fits your needs. I’m quite lucky as I live in Spain with at least 27 courses within a 30 min drive & play four times a week of a very low handicap, any shop around here offers at least all of the above & great advice. Like anything you get what you pay for & look at mid price in your range. Good luck.

No matter if you're a low handicapper or a 'weekend warrior' you'd be well advised to get your swing specs analyzed before buying. An acquaintance of mine builds clubs as a sideline and swears the shaft is the most important aspect of a golf club. He calls the shaft 'the engine that drives the head'.

Personally i'd always rather have a go with something first rather than buying online. Even if you're a higher handicapper its well worth going for a proper fitting.

I’ve basically used the same clubs for the last 15 years where I have played on and off (more off, especially since covid) . I’m hoping to start playing more regularly than I ever have before including taking my teenage son who’s starting to show interest . I’m not looking to spend a fortune nor am I bothered about the latest trend . So long as it works for me and it’s affordable I’ll give it a go.

From the advice so far it looks as if I should visit Ebay . I have a pretty cheap driver and 3 wood in my bag at the moment which I was hitting like a peach a few days ago on the range. I’m probably thinking about my irons first of all as they are the antiques of the set.

Man after my own heart!

Easy to experiment with changing grips, bit of lead tape cutting down a shaft etc, bit sad but I find it fun

Same with some vintage old persimmon headed clubs, good to have a hit with every now and then.

Pro Shop at Burnley Golf Club (Glen View). Paul McEvoy, pro, or Zak Sturgeon, his assistant. Plenty of good used stuff in there at good prices

I’d also recommend Paul Mcevoy. Knows his stuff, no hard sell and always competitive with his prices. Great set up there open to the public where you can try before you buy. You could waste a load of money on clubs that you just can’t use.

If possible always get your golf clubs set up for you rather than buying second hand or off the shelf.
They can measure the speed of your swing and get the right shaft for you (ie It's no good having stiff shafts if your club head speed is under 100mph, you’ll just end up slicing for fun). Do plenty of research on your swing speed, as the shaft is the most important factor of any golf club. I knocked off 5 shots off my handicap just because I changed my shaft to match my swing speed. The next most important factor is the thickness of the grip, it’s no good having a thicker grip if you’ve got small hands, that can affect your wrist action.
Lastly, research has shown that the difference between a 1980’s driver and a modern day one ( with all the claims in advancements) is less than 10 yards. So make sure your club head is suited to your handicap. It’s no good getting blades if you’re a mid to high handicapper. Cavity back clubs are best suited to most people.
Most importantly don’t fall into the “but I can hit it farther with these clubs” .Much better to be able to hit it down the middle than hitting it 5yards further into the rough.

Nevada bob’s used to be in Lytham ( not sure if it’s American golf now-but American golf is still good) . Any Pro at a golf club are always good, and you can get a good price from most of them. The Pro shop at Fairhaven is brilliant and they can refit your preferred shaft/grip combination into their second hand clubs, should you find a club head you like ( plus they may throw in a free round if you buy from them.

I went to Express golf in Shipley for my irons. Being quite tall i'd always played with irons that were a bit too small for me so wanted to get properly fitted. As long as you end up buying something they don't charge you for the fitting session.

Nor sure if anyone has mentioned it byt you could try golf clubs for cash in Warrington. not far off the m62 it's like an alladins cave of used gear old and new think they have a hitting room as well so you can try them out. Their website is pretty good too

If you play golf regularly. I would get fitted as many have said on here.
If you are a once every so often player I would recommend getting forgiving clubs Callway or Pings can’t really go wrong with them

I would recommend Clarkes at Rainford.

A really good set up and they are very professional.

Mrs B went for a fitting for new wedges i expected her to buy at least 3, she came back with one. They added a longer shaft etc.

Cleveland couldnt deliver so were getting the new model for the same price.

I started 3 yrs ago at 56, ive got seconh hand yonex but im going to br fitted for a whole new bag later this year.

County golf on line for clothes.

Thanks everyone for all the advice thus far . In my spare time I’ve ended up watching reviews of RAM FX77 irons - no idea how I came across them I have to admit but they are now in my thoughts.

I have also put a set of Ping i200 irons on my eBay watchlist . I’m hoping to start playing more regularly and if I can find the time and make it more regular, then I may progress to getting myself fitted for clubs .

Played Fleetwood quite a lot, they’ve a fully equipped fitting room there, not used it but they have most of the popular brands.

A few years ago I used to know the golf pro at Myerscough College. The college has a 9 hole course and golf students. Maybe worth contacting if close enough as they have a fountain of knowledge and perhaps would offer great impartial advice.

As has been mentioned by a few posters, myself included, the shaft is the most important part of the golf club. If the golfer is older, lacks swing speed or flexibility possibly using a senior flex shaft may help. Senior shafts are designated with the letter 'A' as apposed to 'R' for regular and 'S' for stiff flex. Ignore what grief your golf cronies may give you for using an 'old farts' shaft, if it helps your game that's job done

I struggle with my back quite regularly due to my line of work mostly which makes me worry about swinging too quickly at times. Would you recommend graphite shafts over steel in this case?

My current clubs are actually graphites but that wasn’t by choice , I’ve had them many years handed to me actually by my grandad

I would say affordable golf. Some decent stuff on there all verified. I bought a decent driver from there.
Major golf is also a good site and delivers.
American Golf for clothes and some bargins for clubs at different times of the year.
You can also get some bargins in the actual golf club shops. The one I use usually has some deal on every week.

Even more of a reason to go for a fitting at your local golf club as they will analyse your swing and suggest the type of clubs that best suit you - if you are going to slow your swing to help your back then the type of shaft they suggest could be really useful to you.

You don’t have to commit to buy any. If you tell turn your budget ask them to look out for some second hand irons. Or look at some of the places suggested on here - like eBay.

Used to be great fun at Townley...and more recently on the Scillies, watching people with dustbin sized bags of expensive clubs gormlessly hacking round the course with next to no idea what they were meant to be doing..a bit like watching overweight unfit blokes doing 28minute 10 mile TT's on £8/9k machines willingly sold to them by the local bike shop.

As in an earlier post, buy according to your ability and spend your hard earned on lessons and fitness. Fancy branded clubs wont be what improves your game, they'll only keep you up with the Jones's.

I’m hoping to get to a local club in the coming weeks - time dependant , and see if I can get my swing analysed and then go from there . I’m in no rush as the weather is turning and it’ll be mainly range work to get me back in to the swing of things . PUN INTENDED
