Thought we were very lucky on first viewing, however, on seeing a replay, Worral looks like he gets a toe-poke on the ball to nudge it away.

Now, i don't know if a tackle from behind is automatically
a foul, dont know the law surrounding that, but obviously the ref didn't think so.

I’m just watching the full match on recording and I haven’t got there yet but on live viewing I thought Gnonto was offside when he received the ball on the edge of our area.
I agree with the OP that Worrall got a toe on the ball and whilst there was simultaneous contact on the Leeds striker it was minimal and not worthy of a pen.

Yeah that disallowed goal when Meslier flattened Barnes still annoys me

I thought pen live and I think it is one that would more likely be given in the Premier League and I'd certainly want it to be given for us. It's a tackle from behind. We were fortunate even if the fact Worrall played the ball created some doubt.

The balance point though is that had Flemmimg gone down when played through at 0-0 Rodon could quite easily have been sent off. Again there was doubt because there was a defender who might have covered but given Flemming got a shot away as it was despite giving Rodon a ride, I don't think anyone could have argued with a red card.

A perfect example of a Big-6 Penalty. A Premiership VAR review would have given it for, but never against one of them.
I watched the game surrounded by Leeds fans, all of whom were adamant that it was a penalty, including the chap who was at the bar and missed seeing it. After the match though all but two conceded that had it been at the other end, they would've gone ballistic if a penalty had been awarded to Burnley.
I thought the best summing up was the chap who argued 'it should have been a penalty because we were the home team, but never if we were away'

As far as I’m aware there is nothing in the laws of the game that says a tackle from behind is illegal. So if Worral won the ball, and didn’t endanger the safety of the opponent then it’s a fair tackle. I haven’t seen it back yet but just correcting what I think is a general misunderstanding of the laws.

I think it's always good to aim for some objectivity. Whether it was a great tackle or not he went through the back and for most refs that's a pen. I seem to think that there were a few on the matchthread who thought we were very lucky there. I would imagine had we lost and not been given many on here would be fuming.

We've had some luck in the past couple of games. Rovers should have had a goal and yesterday we were lucky that it wasn't given. Also that their forward missed a one on one.

However, we played well and are showing real promise. I was very happy with the result and early signs are that Parker has the players backing him. We can't take Pompey for granted (or anyone) and Parker will have to change up his tactics as I expect they will come for a point.

It's a really unadvisable type of tackle to make in the penalty area, even if it's clean. I reckon VAR would referred the official for a screen view.

The whole tackle from behind thing was brought in to stop players going through an opponent, which is obviously dangerous. If you take the ball cleanly, it doesn’t really matter where you tackle from.

Have I seen them given? Especially at places like Leeds away? - 100% yes

Was shitting myself when the ref went over to the lino, thought he was going to give it.

Either way, Worrall needs to be more careful with his challenges in the future.

It was Ben Mee he flattened. Barnes stuck the loose ball away. Still one of the worst decisions I have ever seen

I think the ref must have been very, very confident Worrall had played the ball as he wouldn't have hesitated in giving DL a pen if he could. He proved that when he got so excited when he knew he could send off Humphries.

But that was as clear a booking as you’re likely to see. The referee actually tried to play advantage but stopped play when the Leeds player decided he wasn’t interested.

Not having a bar of that. Ref’s will refuse to admit; they’d run away from that decision 999/1000 times and wait for the VAR to phone him. (IF) he gets on the blower.

Howard webs said as much in a quote recently: ‘refs need to stop relying on VAR’ he knows they wont decide on marginal calls and wait for VAR.

In the same game Leeds got a penalty, which they scored, when Nick Pope delivered a hard tackle on Patrick Bamford which I thought was a good one , taking the ball first. So I'm very pleased about us getting a marginal decision this time. I also thought Worrall took the ball ,poking his foot through the Leeds player's legs, for what it's worth.

Exactly. The way the game is refereed is that when a player falls over, the ref will give a foul unless he is certain that it wasn't a foul. If he sees a player make three forward rolls and banging the floor in anguish and screaming in pain and crying for his teddy bear, and he suspects the defender might have brushed the forward's shin pad, he will give the foul.
