I've been to Oxford once, we lost 5-0. I'm not going again.

Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
I remember a very dull 0-0 in 81/82 when 8 think we played in our white third strip and a 2-2 in John Bond’s season. Having been run ragged by George Lawrence we found ourselves 2-0 down going in to the last 15 minutes, Billy Hamilton pulled one back with a header; then as we entered the last minute Brian Flynn launched a hopeful cross from the left touchline which somehow founds its way into the net!

Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
My only recollection of Oxford is arriving at the ground for an FA cup tie and being told it had been postponed
Went into Oxford for a look around and there was some moron on the bus armed with a sawn off scaffold pole looking for away fans

Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
There was a lot of bad blood between the clubs in 83/84 after Roger Hansbury was struck by a coin in an FA Cup replay which we eventually lost 2-1. We were promotion rivals but after Kevin Reeves injury (in the league game v Oxford at TM?) we dropped away, they went up and signed Billy Hamilton…grrr.
Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
Wasn't Mark Lawrenson the manager of Oxford then? I think he partnered Hamilton with John Aldridge. It was some forward line and Liverpool signed Aldridge.Culmclaret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2024 7:01 pmThere was a lot of bad blood between the clubs in 83/84 after Roger Hansbury was struck by a coin in an FA Cup replay which we eventually lost 2-1. Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
Just looked it up. Lawrenson was manager in 1988 after both Hamilton and Aldridge had left.

I was at the dull 0-0 at the old Manor Ground back in the early 80's. That's the only time I've been. Missed the one mentioned where Weller scored at the death and always regretted it!

Would never have guessed that Paul Smith was in our starting eleven for this game (or any other matches that season)

Went to Wembley when they won the League Cup in the eighties. Robert Maxwell was owner and he gave me 2 tickets in Royal Box area. Very interesting experience

Always hated them for taking my favourite player as a kid , Billy Hamilton

My only previous visit to the Manor Ground was when we got done over by Paul Moody coming off the bench to bag a hat trick. Awful trip.

I was at the 2000 game at Oxford. Ian Wright energised the side and we scored two goals in the last few minutes. Cue delirium!

Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
I was there to- awful day weatherwise, cold, wet and miserable.
If I remember correctly the ball looked like it was going out of play on the far side but Ian Wright didn't give it up- he chased the ball down, stopped it on the line and put in a perfect cross for Paul Weller to head in the winner

Link to highlights. It looks almost like a different sport from the modern game.

Moody, wasn't it? (Not me, the goalscorer).
Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
That game and Brentford away on Easter Monday, and might as well add in Gills midweek when Wrighty got his first goal for us, will stay with me forever! Brilliant days. Scunny obviously was the icing on the cake, but the journey of getting to that final game was a proper emotional ride!

Not one goalkeeper or defender on the bench in that 2000 game!

Saw some awful games at the Manor including our 3rd Round FA cup debacle in the 70s with Ron Atkinson and his brother playing for Oxford with Tony Waiters in goal for us.It was supposed to be an easy passage for us but we lost.
Off to the Kassam on Saturday for our local game.

Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
I went to that 'match'. Our coach got pulled over near Bambury by the team bus and we were told it was off. Wound up in bloody Coventry for some reason (think we decided to go to their match but that was called off too, but not certain). Remember a bit of a stand off with some Coventry fans in Woolworths cafe or some place like it. My main memory was of a flag pole on a garage forecourt at Bambury being pulled over by some irate members of our coach (not me I hasten to add).
Oh the joys of away games in those days.

Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
I reckon in that 99/00 season, we probably had the lead against Oxford in both games combined for about two minutes. Still got 6 points off them somehow.
There were three straight 2-1 wins around this time, think this was either the week before Wright's goal against Notts County or the week after

Same, away days are brilliant to be fair. At that time we used to travel with zero expectation and were often rewarded with zero. Kids nowadays are spoiled with the relative successdougcollins wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2024 11:25 amHad a great day out to be fair- apart from 15:00 to 16:50.

It certainly reduced the pain somewhat. In fact, I think I left the Manor thinking we’d ‘only’ lost 3-0!

Weller was very good in the air, and he also had a great leap on him.

Re: A Snippet from The Oxford Board
I remember a 2-0 win on a cold December afternoon in 1980. I recall nothing about the game but have a clear memory at half time a song came on the tannoy & 1 of the guys I was with got really excited; 'listen to this' he said, it's a great new Christmas song.' Turned out to be that Stop The Cavalry by Jona Lewie. Hated it then & hated it ever since!
