Disappointed and angry

Post by Wadesawinger » Sat Sep 28, 2024 7:15 pm

Good parts of being a claret... leisure who kindly helped out by sorting of tickets for us today which was very much appreciation,
Sadly the sad side of so called Clarets. We go to our seats and find that we have aisle seats my wife who is 70 and has and is still recovering from a brain tumor was pleased to find the extra leg room and ability to see most of the match without standing, we find a ....almost called him a gentleman sat in our seats politely ask if we could sit there to be told to go and sit somewhere else !!, when she said this was her seat and she would like to sit there she got called a FU...ING BAS ARD. When I then tried to remonstrate with this "person" the tirade that came my way was how could a be a Burnley fan as I didn't even sound like I was from Burnley, I did question that maybe I had missed something that you needed a Burnley passport to be a Burnley fan at which stage one of his mates pushed him away but we still had to end up sitting near him throughout the match to ruined what we had hoped and enjoyable day, watching the Clarets, part of me hopes that you reads this but that is to suggest that his IQ reached the level of being able to read..... Whatever I hope he is proud of himself. Which when my wife was explaining her illness and her age he never even uttered a word 😡 let alone any apology..... By the way... I started supporting Burnley when Willie Irvine played for us but apologies for my accent .

It's a shame but it's a football problem not just a Burnley problem. The sport attracts the absolute dregs of society unfortunately. It's already put me off playing and will probably put me off watching eventually.

The OP post doesn’t surprise me. I don’t know how some of these ‘fans’ find their way to away games they are so thick. Who cares where you’re from or what accent you have, you and your wife are far the better Burnleys fan than that idiot. What an embarrassment to have in our fanbase.

Shocking to hear that wade but hardly surprising. I think it’s fair to say that 99.9% of (proper) Burnley supporters will be appalled to read your post. I hope your wife makes a full and speedy recovery after her operation.

Sad to read, but not shocked. We have some absolute helmets supporting us, then again I suppose all clubs do.

The bloke stood in front of me today was an absolute ‘Choose your own expletive’. Swearing is swearing, I get that - this guy said the C word every sentence at his loudest possible volume, at OUR players (“Cullen you Irish C” example), endlessly. Fair play, a lady further down the aisle called him out on it so then he turned the tirade on her. An older gent told him to shut up, he turned on him (this was right at the end of the game) and it looked like it might become physical. An embarrassment, frankly.

Whilst he may read it, it is very unlikely that he'll be ashamed :(

This is not a Burnley problem, not even a football problem. The problem is Society.

We have too many Chavs out there who believe that they can behave as they want. There is very little respect for anyone any more :(

Probably, he will be proud of the way he behaved :(

He needs to be identified and called out !

I decided that after the away match at Preston 2 seasons ago that I would not attend another away match,...flares ignite on the concourse, stood up the all match because of the six lads standing in 3 'seats' ..no consideration for other people. Unfortunately that is now the society we live in now 😔

Me too. I also saw Willie Irvine play for Burnley and, in recent years, have been dismayed by the behaviour of our away fans. I started going to away games before many of the current so called away supporters were born and have commented on a number of occasions that the quality and behaviour of our away contingent is not something to be proud of.

Strange that many of them considered they had an entitlement to preferment for away tickets when the points system was introduced and then revamped.

At away games now I am not always proud to be a Burnley fan. Incidents as described above support this view .

Sorry if there are some on here who lack the concentration to understand my point

Following Burnley away has always been like that unfortunately, not a new phenomenon. I used to be nervous taking my lad when he was younger and advise my dad not to go now, it’s just how it is sadly.

Most of it is down to excessive drink and drugs. No excuse for speaking to an older fan like that. If my lad spoke to a lady like that I’d leather him myself.

It’s a lottery going away to watch Burnley in so much as who you end up sat (stood) next to. This is why my wife no longer attends away games with me.
The situation you experienced today is a regular one. A few minutes before kick off or shortly afterwards the large coked up/boozed up group all pile onto a row where one or two of their mates are. There aren’t any spare seats or spaces but they just stand in front of their mates and anyone who is next to them meaning only they can see properly. It’s not good and it isn’t wise to challenge them as it could result in a smack in the mouth.
It is only a small fraction of our support who behave like this but it isn’t an enjoyable day out if you get anywhere near inconsiderate tw@ts like these.

Lads in front of me could hardly stand up and just kept falling over and shouting at everyone. Football seems to have lost the violence but retained the nastiness and I wonder whether the lack of violence allows these melts to behave this way. It's almost fashionable to be off your face and obnoxious and they know nobody will do anything about it. Some order needed and it isn't coming from those poor stewards.

We had a similar situation at Leeds but were helped by their excellent stewards. They took us out of the situation while they sorted it out. We’re at the point where we need a non drunk, non coked up section for those who want to sit down and enjoy what we’ve paid to see.

Some form of (safe) standing with non designated seats would help. Before you would just move away from the trouble. You literally knew where it was down to where the bricks were landing. It's less dangerous now but completely pot luck who you sit next to / near.

Repulsive

I know confrontation isn't in everybody, but there has to have been other Clarets who saw this. Surely someone could have had a word, or at least asked for stewards to intervene on their behalf. We're all responsible, not just the coked up chavs, if we do nothing, we're just as bad as them.

You will be receiving a solicitor's letter, shortly. Beer mats can absorb many things and have many other attributes - able to be collected - variety of designs, flicked, skimmed through the air, built together to create boxes, stand on each other to reach great heights, etc.

How many Burnley fans can do that?

It's not 'today's society'. People like those mentioned here were around fifty years ago back in the 1970s, however, back then you were more likely to 'bump' into them on the terracing, rather than in the stands. At least you could move out of the way in those days.

In all honesty there's a lot of you directing this towards younger supporters but last week I went on with two season tickets in the long side lower to find two old ladies in my seats. When I asked if they knew they were in my seat they said yes and that they hadn't been able to get two together. I think they were Pompey fans if I'm honest. But it's not just the younger generation who think they can sit where they like. Unlike the op I'm in good health so switching wasn't a problem and I doubt had I asked either woman to move they would have caused a problem either but this belief that's it only little chavs that sit where they want is false.

Or they'd get a thump and be told to give over. No consequences in today's society is the problem. As you say was no worse back then, if anything it was worse with bricks and darts flying around.

All seater stadiums have made issues like this worse. With terracing any groups you wanted to avoid you just moved.

It's not just a problem with Burnley. I know a Liverpool ST holder who used to go home and away and now doesn't travel away due to similar issues with drunken, coked up yobs following the Reds. Until society clamps down on this type of behaviour it will only get worse.

On a more positive note, my first witnessed Clarets goal was Willie Irvine in a League Cup replay at Arsenal in Dec 67. A back-header that looped over Jim Furnell in the Arsenal goal, but only a consolation as we lost 2-1. It was a midweek game as I recall so few Burnley fans there and I remember being so impressed by just a couple of big Burnley lads making their way down the Caledonian Road ignoring an Arsenal mob and holding their scarves aloft.

If this happens to anyone else make a stand and involve the stewards every time. Others in the crowd should have helped you as well. What are we coming to, that we should take it for granted there will be some nasty people who might pick on the elderly. I wish Steven Segal had been with you.
It is not just a football thing. I remember being abused by an objectionable member of the bourgeoisie at a Jools Holland concert.
I made a stand , nearly clumped the fellow. Thought better of it and involved security who dragged him out with his dish of pate, French stick and all.

Some frightening folk go to football games.

At Leeds there was a bloke in front of me who looked off his face on something and spent the whole game trying to goad the Leeds supporters. I’m not sure he once looked at the pitch. After the game we had the misfortune of walking behind him towards the buses and he appeared intent on starting a fight with every Leeds fan who passed him. The Police ended up walking alongside him to keep him in check.

The saddest part of it was that he was with his son. The lad couldn’t have been much older than 7 or 8.

No consolation but it was good to meet you and your wife outside, the ground as we waited for our tickets to be brought down so kindly by Leisure and Clatettiilidie.

As I write this I’m still not home thanks to the delights of British Rail! ETA 22:45!
Hope you got home safe, likewise nice to meet you!

Shouldn’t all clubs just be denying them entry or kicking them out if they’re not behaving? It’s not really the responsibility of the customers to police the premises

I wouldn't be put off, Tackler.

Although there are some very unpleasant people following us away, the vast majority of us are well-behaved and friendly, and you'd be very unlucky to be sitting in the vicinity of an idiot.

Did I say " sitting "? I meant standing, of course, but that's another issue.

For a 12.30 TV game think you'll be fine. Likely to be a following of diehards and exiled clarets. Be plenty of spare seats as well.

I’m sorry to read of this experience which shouldn’t be happening.

As I’m now an exiled Claret I haven’t been to an away game for some time although I’m hopeful I may be able to get to one this season.

Based on this I have to ask is this kind of thing now the norm at out away games?
Do fans basically sit where they want or do most still go to their assigned seat on their ticket?

Would the stewards have done anything if pointed out or is just not worth it?

The reason I ask is that I don’t think this is an isolated example. It feels like it happens more and more. It only takes one dipstick to deliberately sit in the wrong seat to create a bigger problem. I’ve always gone to my assigned seat but those days may now be gone if the problem above is more widespread.

It's not new. It is a minority but may have increased since loyalty point/tickets sold in bands/max 6 tickets has been introduced meaning groups don't get tickets together.

I wouldn't let it put you off. The OP is an extreme example which shouldnt happen

That I have experienced. About half a dozen pushing past and then stopping because they surround a couple of mates. Thinking it is OK to be standing in front of you and your seat, is bizarre.

I asked, firmly for a couple to take their seat or move on. They looked as though they didn't understand, until one of those with a seat, told them there was not room for them all.

The problem is this standing when away. I have just about stopped going away now, as I can't do 90+ mins on my legs at a standstill. Pity, after over 50 years of virtually all away matches.

In my youth the Longside sang “ All the Burnley stick together “.
Everyone should make this their way of life
