O/T music poll Kinks v Hollies
O/T music poll Kinks v Hollies
Two of my favourite groups ever from the sixties the Kinks and the Hollies. Both groups are fantastic, the Hollies our local northern group who's harmonies are fantastic and the Kinks representing the South who have perhaps one of the greatest ever songwriters in Sir Ray Davies. Both groups have produced some fantastic records over the years. My particular Hollies fav being Long cool woman in a Black dress and my Kinks fav being Sunny Afternoon.
Really hard decision for me,but for me I'm sticking with the Kinks but still love the Hollies.
Your thoughts. ?

In fact, all day and all of the night too.

Not sure if the OP is trolling but the Kinks are one of the all time greats whilst the Hollies were a mediocre 60's band. In football terms it would be like comparing Man Utd to Preston

TheﹰKinks 100%
Ray Davies and his band produced some of the greatest
seminal English music ever. His urban vision of the sun setting over the Thames at Waterloo station is one of music's most iconic creations.
Hollies were just a band.

Is the OP serious?
Hollies were just about one step up from what you'd see at Stacksteads Workers.
A serious comparison may be Kinks/Small Faces/Who.

The Kinks songwriting ability far outstripping that of the Jollies, however, the Hollies had a very distinctive sound led by singers Allan Clarke and later World star Graham Nadh.

The Hollies were far more successful- in the UK and globally - and of course Graham Nash went on to outstrip them both. A couple of Kinks songs have lasted very well and they were far more quirky and ‘British’

The Hollies were a very good band, not just a mediocre band.
They were well regarded back in the day and were known as the bands band - other artists aspired to them.
Alan Clarke had one of the best voices in the business.
The Kinks just pip it though.

The Hollies had one of the best drummers going in the sixties with Bobby Elliott. He was well regarded in the music world. He has written a book about his life which is very interesting.

Bobby Elliot was born in Burnley and lead guitarist Tony Hicks was a Nelson lad. I like the Kinks but prefer The Hollies, especially Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH11CPDXzr4

Bob Henrit, the drummer who replaced the original for The Kinks (Mick Avory), has also written a good book, 'Banging On!'.

I like a small number of songs from both bands but none of them have any that I would consider my all time favourites. They are both just other sources of some decent music which includes other big names like The Beatles, Stones etc..

Re: O/T music poll Kinks v Hollies
I would go with the Kinks also as they were extremely influential in the development of the heavy rock sound, which became heavy metal in the 70s, due to their loud distorted guitar riffs on ‘You Really Got Me’ and ‘All Day and All of the Night’. I really like the Hollies as well but they weren’t as influential or original as the Kinks.

Hollies all day long for me, tony Hicks guitar playing, well the opening note, on the air that i breath was described by Eric Clapton as the coolest note ever played on a guitar and i don't need to mention he aint heavy , although the kinks did write one of my favourite songs of all time with waterloo sunset - but with 3 of the most successful line up in the Hollies being local (Bobby Elliot, Tony Hicks and Bernie Calvert) and 2 of them still touring then it has to be the Hollies for me

Did not Graham Gouldman (of 10CC) not write some of the big selling Hollies numbers (as he did with the Yardbirds). I love listening to both the Hollies & Kinks but have seen the latter and they are my favoured band. Also saw the theatrical musical on the Kinks 4 or 5 years ago and that was great

Saw the Hollies many times live and the Kinks just the once.
The Hollies were one of my favourite bands in the Sixties
Little between the two but if I had to pick one it would be the Hollies

The Kinks, Ray Davies, have written far more quality tunes but nothing to compare to “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother” or “The air that I breathe”
I’ll abstain, too close to call.

Re: O/T music poll Kinks v Hollies
Kinks for sure. I attended a Ray Davies and friends concert around 20 years ago. Paloma Faith, Wendy James joined him on Stage.
Ray "admitted" that his brother Dave was the better song writer, and had probably written more songs and that Ray had forgotten to credit him.
Dave was scheduled to play that night, but sadly suffered a stroke previous week!

Why is this seeded so that the Beatles can't draw the kinks and get knocked out in the first round? Usual scouse bias. I see cilla black has drawn the krankies.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 1:40 pmWhat next - a music poll involving The Beatles v Showaddywaddy?
It might be a fun thing to do, though, have a music fa cup on here. 32 nominations and then a first round draw with each tie getting 24 hours. So far we have:-
1. The kinks
2. The hollies
3. The beatles
4. Showaddywaddy
And as I've mentioned 24 hours, I nominate
5. Joy division
Further nominations please.....

Nothing against the Hollies, who are deservedly in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, but there is only one correct answer to this question and it is The Kinks.

Re: O/T music poll Kinks v Hollies
Why are people named Clarke given the nickname Nobby?
Re: O/T music poll Kinks v Hollies
People with the surname Clark are sometimes called Nobby because clerks used to wear top hats in the City. Bryan Forbes, whose real name was John Clarke, explained this in his autobiography.
The word "nobby" first appeared in English in the 18th century, and was used to describe people of high social standing. It was also used to describe the places that these people frequented, and their customs. In cockney rhyming slang, "Nobby Clark" is also a term for a shark.

Re: O/T music poll Kinks v Hollies
The Hollies are a real rarity - a 60s band with all their ‘classic’ line-up still alive, not bad for a five-piece. However original bassist Eric Haydock, who played on the early hits, died in 2019. He was replaced in 1966 by Brierfielder Bernie Calvert, and it’s Bernie and the rest you see on most YouTube videos from the era

Re: O/T music poll Kinks v Hollies
I like both groups from when music was music before backing tracks and autocue etc. Bus stop is quit possibly the most listened to song for me. However Ray Davies is universally acknowledged for his songwriting and has inspired many an artist past and present. For that alone my vote would go to The Kinks.
