There have been many times over the many years watching Burnley that hallucinogenic substances may have improved what I was seeing!

I’ve been in the back of many transit vans and a couple of Luton ‘s but none of those trips were Sensible!

Nigel Blackburn aka Dover Claret never missed for years rarely seen now but some trips for all the games.
Also, some of the Morecambe Clarets were characters led by another Rocky, must be the sea air!!!!

I seem to remember a postman who was a friend of the aforesaid Illy. The name Barney springs to mind? Always wore his postie hat with the trim piece holding it in an American GI mode. Recall Illy working in the Wagggon and Horses Brierfield. Always thought there was something of the Mick Jagger about him...

Adrian was a good footballer, played with him for Colne Legion in the West Lancashire League, he played cricket for Jimmy Nelson’s. He was killed in a motorcycle accident coming home from work in Colne. Sad !!

I think I have mentioned this before but I am pretty sure you played in the same Colne Legion side as my step father, Terry Spedding. Difficult to miss him, 6 foot 6 goalkeeper! And as you say, Ada Marshall was a good footballer.California Colner wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2024 9:10 pmAdrian was a good footballer, played with him for Colne Legion in the West Lancashire League, he played cricket for Jimmy Nelson’s. Re: Characters
Remember going to Hull first game of the season under John Bond. Must have been over 20 of us in the back of a Luton van all drinking crates of beer. On the way back on the M62 the tail gate was up on the van and lads were sat across the back with their legs dangling over the edge. We then had a puncture, so parked up on the hard shoulder we had to change a wheel, but there was no jack, so everyone grabbed hold and lifted the van while the tyre was changed. Happy days. Perhaps a good job there were no traffic cameras back then or motorway police. The trip was organised by my uncle nickname Ackag, he had a bit of a reputation back thenI’ve been in the back of many transit vans and a couple of Luton ‘s but none of those trips were Sensible!

Re: Characters
The people on the picture are from left are Brian Lucas.Oldham Mick. Malcolm Moss. the tall guy with glasses is Ray Ward.from Padiham. now in Australia and still with us. Preston Prick.. who was actually a decent Chap. at the Far end is Norman Stephens. From Putney.who followed Burnley home and away for 4 or 5 seasons .until he Married a Sheffeild Lass he met on the Terraces.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 9:01 pmDoug is still around I think and Malcolm Moss definitely is. Vince Foster too is still about, was speaking to him not long ago.
I never knew Steve Mackriel but I've got to know his wife quite well through Alan Beecroft. Mick Kilburn died quite recently. I didn't know Preston Prick's name either but what a good bloke he was.
Some of those mentioned are on the pic below - Brian Lucas is far left, Malcolm Moss third from the left and PP second from the right. The pic was taken on the way to the Fairs Cup game in Frankfurt. Brian Lucas had been refused time off work so went off sick. This photo appeared in the Burnley Express leading to Brian receiving his P45. He sadly passed away over 17 years ago now. Missed by us where we sit in the Longside.
One other name to mention alongside Brian Wren was Roy Kilby - those two went to every away game together for years and years.

Re: Characters
Wasn't it Ackag and Jonny Oneare who attacked the Police Box at Ewood with part of the asbestos roofing and it kept breaking until they both shrug their shoulders and moved on to better things in the disturbance? Which nicely links to Billy Bungalow who started the whole riot at Ewood with his welly boot and he used to swing off the girders up above on the Longside at half time.

Re: Characters
Long hair and bikers jacket full of badges. Two main memories were getting arrested with him and four others after a game at Spurs. We got pounded 4-0 and we left early. Illy went on the rampage and the coach then got attacked. Following Monday in court.
Other was him hanging an Oldham fan out of a gap in the home end in a ‘friendly’. Drop was a good forty feet. Thankfully he saw sense and dragged him back in.
Last time I saw him, many years ago, he was working as a bouncer at a basement club in Colne. Under a pub on the main street. Name just escapes me.

I can remember being cornered along with about 30 other Burnley fans in a subway en route back to Middlesboro station....sizeable gangs of local skinheads at either end... Illy was a very welcome presence there...just picked one end and charged at it...got us all through in one piece, but a very scary moment.
