Bernard Darwin- RIP

Post by BurnleyPaul » Sat Oct 12, 2024 11:33 am

For those of an “older” persuasion you may remember Bernard Darwin- especially if you worked at the club in the late 80s/early 90s through to the mid/late 00s.

Bernard and his close friend Jim Thompson were partners in crime for decades- firstly on the turnstiles back in “the glory days” and then behind the scenes for a whole lot longer. Jim’s death a few years ago hit Bernard very hard in fact coming as it did a short while after the death of his own wife- Anne.

In recent years Bernard has had several health issues and earlier this year was in fact hospitalised due to a UTI which developed into sepsis. As many of you know the recovery from sepsis can take a while and even though Bernard appeared to be recovered on the outside there is no doubt that when he came out of hospital and was home this illness had taken its toll on him and he was definitely a little quieter and slower than he had been.

Bernard died in his sleep either late last night or early this morning. He is survived by his son Peter, his daughter Sandra, their partners, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren too, my thoughts are with all of them at this time.

On a personal level Bernard’s death hits me hard as it was he who started taking me onto matches back in the infamous 86/87 season- my first game being just after my 10th birthday. I had no real interest in football at that point (and to be fair I still don’t in a “general” sense) but I was entranced by Burnley FC. My passion for all things Burnley FC is a direct result of Bernard and what he did for me; it’s a debt I can never really repay.

Bernard- I’ll miss you. 😢

Firstly Paul, what a lovely tribute to someone who clearly meant so much to you.

I'd know Bernard for donkey's years because of him working at the club and our shared passion for everything BFC. Just before he left, he took me into a little cubby hole (I'm sure it was in the cricket field stand) where he'd stored lots of items that had been discarded by the club. It included the opening plaque for the old Centre Spot with pics of the two people who opened it (were they Sirs Matt Busby & Tom Finney I'm not sure?).

I've seen him an odd time since he retired but not for a good while and then, two or three weeks ago I thought I'd seen him in town although from a distance. Obviously, given what you've posted, that wasn't the case.

I'm really saddened at this news - lovely bloke who cared so much about the football club.

Football clubs needed people like Bernard (and Jim Thompson) but sadly ours doesn't have them now.

RIP Bernard, fellow Claret.

I did not know Bernard, however, your tribute brings him to life, which the best accolade one can give, in remembrance, Paul.

Your loss is palpable.

Thank you for being Burnley, Bernard.

Bernard was a genuine lovely man, did quite a lot of favours for the club when he was the maintenance man and he always looked after the lads with complimentary`s , alongside Jim T and Arthur Bellamy who was groundsman at the time they were like last of the summer wine characters when the three of them were together, a true character and as already mentioned Claret and blue through and through. RIP Bernard it was a privilige to have known you.

Another ex turnstiler in the 80s / early 90s who fondly remembers both Jim and Bernard. Sad news but good to hear he leaves such a large brood of descendants behind him.

I thought I recognized the name but it wasn't until post from "longhair" and "claretgimmer" confirmed it was the same man. I didn't know him well, but back in the 90's when I used to drink in the Prairie for a post match drink, I like many others would find out from him insider info on any new or ongoing injuries to players. It could be said at times he "Held Court" if it was important news.

After reading all the other posts one thing that came to mind was in a highlights video, though I cant remember which season. It the last game of the season and the players are walking around the pitch to obvious applause and for a few seconds Bernard is seen walking with them. The players have no problem that he is there on the pitch with them, someone from behind the scenes, so to say.
MY opinion is that they recognized him as being someone who helped keep the club running as smoothly as possible, a familiar face who had been around the ground since they signed for Burnley.
I think its fair to say whilst he worked there Bernard was " PART AND PARCEL of BURNLEY FOOTBALL CLUB"

RIP Bernard

CT- the contents of that cubbyhole (well quite a bit of it anyway!) made its way home with Bernard when he retired. I’m not sure what exactly is still there but I’m hopeful that I can retrieve some of it; in particular one of the original floodlight bulbs that he had. There is stuff he had which genuinely is part of the fabric and heritage of the club; he valued it even when the club itself didn’t…

As for seeing him- it’s entirely possible. He was out and about but nowhere near as much as he used to be.

It’s funny really; I lived across from him for my entire childhood and when I came back to Burnley 11 years ago he became part of my life again. I’ve seen him grow old and even this year as he slowed down and everything caught up with him I still never thought of him as being mortal- he was what he always was to me, “Uncle Bernard” and whilst I could imagine other I’ve known of a similar age being gone for some reason Bernard just seemed invincible in some way in my head.

What’s nice for me is seeing some of the other comments people have left. I’m heartened to see that others had such a respect for him too and I’m sure that if/when I share this thread with his family that they will be happy to see such words too.

Such sad news. I remember Bernard well from my time working in the Guest Bar and Sponsors in the Bob Lord stand mid 90s. He regularly popped into my bar after the match with Jim Thompson and had many a chat with the pair of them and often would sneak them a couple of pints courtesy of the match Sponsors if they had a free bar. On match days Bernard would wear a black blazer, white shirt and a BFC tie and no matter how smartly he dressed, always looked as though he had just finished repairing machinery.

He was part of the fabric of our club during my 4 years working there as well as being a fantastic bloke. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. RIP Bernard, a true Claret and a legend to those who knew and worked with him.

Thank goodness that treasure trove was rescued - whatever happens to it now, it left Turf Moor in the hands of someone who cared and that means a lot to the rest of us who care. If it was Bernard I saw recently, and I was sure it was, I'm only sorry I wasn't able to get over and speak to him. I did speak to a couple of former members of staff yesterday who both wanted to pass on their condolences.

He really was a proper Claret.

I'm a bit shocked to read this. I bumped into him maybe a month ago when I called into Home Bargains on Colne Rd. We had a good chat. I offered him a lift home, which he politely refused and said that the exercise would do him good, especially as it was a fine sunny day. He looked well for his age.

R.I.P Bernard.

Had a few brews in his cubbyhole with him , always well humoured and up for tale and a laugh .
he told me once a director who shall remain unnamed " to get up to the roof level and change a light bulb in the Cricket Field Stand now !! " .
Bernards answer made me laugh then and still does when I think of it.
Wonder if the bulb is still out ? !!

Sad news, I knew Bernard from the Prairie pub, he also worked at Bellings with my Dad many moons ago, Always asked how he was doing. I hadn't seen him for over 18 months at least until a couple of weeks ago, saw him at the bus stop at Queensgate as I was passing.
Genuinely nice guy. R.I.P Bernard

Hi there everyone my name is Kristin Darwin and I am one of Bernard’s grandsons. My mother Sandra Darwin wanted to let all know whom knew Bernard that she is very grateful for all the kind heartfelt words from everyone. She would also like to notify that his funeral will be held at Burnley Crematorium on the Friday the 1st of November at 14:30pm. His funeral cortège will be passing Turf Moor at around 14:00pm if anyone would like to be there to pay their respects to Bernard. Thankyou all once again at this heartbreaking time for us all and everyone whom knew such a wonderful man.
