Mulholland Drive.

Takes some understanding that film.

Crash (1996)

A truly perturbing film that centres on a group of people who are Symphorophilliacs, who derive sexual pleasure from staging and watching road traffic accidents.

That was a good p!sstake. The 'spoons in Sunderland was 'The Lampton Worm' which told the myth that the film was based on. Closed down now.
Haha, remember seeing that (to my amusement) on TV late one night after coming in from having a few jars. I'd been aware of the Lambton Worm folk song for ages and realized this was connected but it was pretty racy and Hugh Grant was in it (very much pre-fame and probably to his embarrassment).

I hated The Lobster, though I normally like Weisz or Farrell films. It’s “weirdness” just seemed viscous and littered with too obvious metaphors. Just my view and I’m totally aware of it’s huge cult following. I do think it’s worthy of including in this list though.

I’ll just stick with Wes Anderson’s weirdness. The Life Aquatic is a masterpiece.

Jacob's Ladder (1990).

Extremely disturbing in parts with twists throughout.
A quite brilliant film, it works on multiple levels . One of my very fav cameos is Danny Aiello playing “ Louis” the Chiropractor.

I watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the other week. It is one of those love-or-hate films. I loved the drug-fueled bonkersness of it all. After all, Hunter S. Thompson was half-mad in real life.

Mexican film "El Topo" is truly mystifying and weird but you have to keep with it to try and unscramble what it's about (not that I did).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Uqb4Jy ... ds%26Films

In terms of British films "A Field in England" is v weird but was well received by arty critics if I remember correctly

The Lighthouse …Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson go slowly nuts as 19th century lighthouse keepers on a remote island. Shot in black and white it’s fantastically bleak.

Werner Herzog's "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" from 1972.
"Special Bulletin" from 1983. Anyone who liked the movie "Threads" as mentioned in the earlier thread of its own a few days ago would like this, except that this is even better.
As for a cult movie - "Dr. Strangelove" one I always like.

Not quite obscure, but my favourite film is Perfect Sense

Best described as a low-key apocalypse film, that felt strangely prescient when early 2020 rolled round

the boondock saints - not sure how obscure it is but has a stellar cast.

i do like a film based on a true story though

13 hours - the secret soldiers of Benghazi - if you like action/war type films.

Emir Kusturica's films are rather offbeat to say the least.

An example of this is "Life Is A Miracle". There's little plot but, well, you'll either like it or not.

One Yugoslav film I really recommend is "Who's Singin' Over There?". It was a massively popular film throughout Yugoslavia.

It tells the story of a coach journey from some obscure town bound for Belgrade. It's a sort of comedy road movie.

Yes, the main character (the boy Oscar) certainly is weird though it was set in weird times (1930s/40s Germany/Poland). I watched it again fairly recently; Ive not read the book but I think the book also goes on to cover a later period than the film. I like the film a lot.

The boy Oscar played by an 11 year old (David Bennent) is a wonderful fictional character. The actor grew to 5 foot in adulthood and appeared in a few other films and stage plays. He was in "Legend" with Tom Cruise, another odd, more obviously fantasy, film.
