Boothferry Park, Hull City - old football grounds remembered (ii)

Seemed fitting to go with Hull for the next trip in the memory lane series, with Burnley heading up there on Wednesday evening.

I’m guessing that Clive Middlemass and his caretaker Burnley side might get a mention in this thread.

For me, I’ll mention John Deary scoring the winner for Burnley in front of a packed away end (with fans in the side stands too) in January 94. A rare away win in a season that saw us promoted thanks to our home form. Davis got our first goal from an Adrian Heath Corner and Inchy was provider again for the brilliant Deary strike.

What are your memories of Boothferry, be it trips to the ground, on-pitch action, or something more personal?

Remember going about 1993. I was only 16. About 8 of us went. My old man let me go with a local character and his mates. Mum gave me a four pack of beer for the trip. Remember a pub near the ground packed. Fans just leaning over and pouring their glasses. Overwhelmed staff laughing about it as helpless to do anything. The character was getting beers for everyone. Mad times but not as mad as a similar time going to Charlton in the cup and a fan just having a pee against the bar...
Lived near Hull in later life. I liked the old school vibe of this ground. Went to the new one a few times watching the rugby.

Anyone else back of a Luton Van, late 70s stopping off at Goole after Hull away and enjoying a lively night courtesy of Goole Rugby Club......then spending the night at Goole Police Station ?

My memory of Boothferry park. Almost every season the away end as in a different section of the ground. One night game we arrived just after kick off. Through the turnstiles and ran into the terrace on the side, only to realise it was full of hull fans. We had to be escorted around to the opposite side. The visitors this season were in the paddock opposite. Following season behind the goals.

Fans tried to cram under the roofed section of their "little longside" but there was nowhere near enough room.
The result was that not only did we get rained on, when the deluge came it also sloshed off the side of the roof and onto the fans who were squished up to, but not under, the roof.

Worth it for the win.

Other memories of Boothferry Park include seeing Ian Helliwell play. That wasn't as much fun.

Only went once as a kid in 1996. We were in the seats along the side, not behind the goal where I think our fans were, possibly Bertie Bee away day club, Squazo who posts on here was in front of me, may have whizzed toilet rolls onto the pitch when the teams came out The only excitement was a long range shot that hit the bar? Got beat 3-0

Been twice and both seemed to attract characters from our support.

The Deary game where we had just got underneath the shelter bit. Rumours going around Eyers had been sold as he was missing.
A guy next to me telling his mate he had his baseball bat confiscated off him outside by the plod, but told them he found it on the way to the ground to avoid arrest.
When swearing in one of the chants he covered the ears of a young supporter in front. It sort of balanced his behaviours up.

The first time I went I was stung at a services for a meal. I would have only been 14 and the average chippy meal would have been about a quid. 6.50 was charged for chicken and chips. I nearly cried, I only had a tenner for the day. Luckily Hull was cheap for youngsters at 2 pound entrance.
Some guy had taken a cabbage in homage to Joe Jakub and many songs were sung about it.
The first time I was aware of Rocky. I give the ref some stick and got lifted up by an old man from behind who kept shouting 'go on lad' as he shook me about like a rag doll.
It didn't look possible to a teenager that someone of his age could be so strong.

It was a ground I liked.

After a bit of searching Hull's keeper that I was thinking of was Roy Carroll so the game I saw was probably in 1995.

I recall that game too. 80/81 season and they were fighting in lumps down the side where I was standing. Dreadful game
too, finished 0-0, but still better than a previous visit in 76/7 where we lost 1-4 and finished up conceding 9 goals in 2 away games with a 1-5 defeat at Notts County 3 days before thrown in for good measure.

The 2-1 win was the year we got promoted at Wembley. I think Middlemass might have been in charge two years later in a 3-0 defeat.

As a much younger supporter and with far less sense and probably about 1990, I was so drunk after finding a nearby cocktail bar that I can only think I was let into the ground for my own safety.

Think we won that day, but a quite uncomfortable experience locating my mouth with a nuclear hot pie and trying to be that bloke who's not quite managing to pass off as sober.

The season after and getting so wet, I think I dried out last week.

Was a rough ground, and was certainly dilapidated in areas but great memories, of what I can remember.

Used to travel with Colne Clarets back then and remember being stood behind the goal drenched, freezing and it being dark……….a lovely trip back.

Yep like a few others have said, that game l was as wet as I have ever been in my life , soaked to the skin with water an inch deep in my pockets. I believe it was a good performance but I was to wet to care.

Apart from the above mentioned wet one where Deary scored a late winner one of my other visits to Boothferry Park was around March ‘96 under the stewardship of Clive Milddlemass. A 3-0 defeat if memory serves and not a huge crowd.

Went, as teenagers, with my best mate - he died 2 years sgo tomorrow, aged 59...miss him but have happy memories of some great times, including that day at Boothfery Patk.

After the game John Deary scored the winner me & my brother were so wet we stripped down to our undies for the drive back to Macclesfield & actually stopped of at the services dressed like that to have a wizz .

I have memories of that game - hitch-hiked there from Staffordshire; started off on covered terrace but eventually ended up in paddock on opposite side of pitch; after game got lift from Clarets onto M62; then lift on a pub rugby team bus to the Warrington/Irlam exit on M6 just before Thelwall Viaduct very late. Torrential downpour, just had denim jacket so totally drenched, after midnight, took refuge in phone box just off the slip road and stayed in it till daylight when rain stopped. Splashed back to slip road still soaked through and finally got lift in lorry down to Keele services from where I could get home. Worth it for the win though.
Then in October of 95-96 season I was working on sports desk of a regional paper covering match at Boothferry Park. It was a very windy day and to access Press Box involved climbing a rickety metal ladder/stairway loosely attached to rear of the stand that was swaying alarmingly. I think at least one of media people refused to use it.

Think I've been a couple of times to the old Boothferry Park.....remember the very wet game just because it was very wet, far too drunk to remember anything else other than nicking a large homemade luminous pink sign from a fishing tackle shop that made its way back to Clitheroe......silly boy

I used to work with a Hull fan. He told me a tale of a game where he was in the posh seats. Well after the game had finished, they had gone back into the stand and a certain ex Hull striker with local connections (OK it was Andy Payton) walked across the pitch suited and booted. And thinking the ground was empty, proceeded to stop and have a wee in the middle of the pitch
