What a team we had out that day. It was over three years later before it happened but Frank’s performance that day triggered his move to Burnley.

think Frank was our first signing since Alex Elder some 8 years earlier…amazing period without signing any 1st team player…relying on a superb efficient scouting system!

Notice Brian O'Neill and Brian Miller at half back. Did we have a third Brian who might have slotted in, even just once, to match the three Joshes from last weekend? (John Talbut - I had to check - failed to complete the trio!)

Long before the big clubs trashed the best competition in the land.

The smaller clubs did very little to prevent it mind..dreaming only about an occasional payday,.and the bbc weren't much more than cheerleaders for them.

Some familiar names from my ‘junior’ days when I started following football.

Future team mates were opponents in the Bath v Bolton tie.

Tony Book and Lee Won Pen (living up to his future nickname in this match).

Interesting that Oldham had three goals but four goalscorers. Maybe one was a late disallowance by VAR.

Some great names from yesteryear amongst those line-ups. I went to this game, but my memory once more letting me down as to whether Frank put his team 1 up. It was a wonderful competition back then, right from hearing the draw on a Monday lunchtime from FA headquarters up to the playing of the games all.on the same afternoon. Replays were equally exciting especially for those clubs hoping to be that season's giantkillers.

I know Newcastle were famously beaten by Hereford in the FA Cup, but that loss at home to Bedford must rank up there as one of their worst losses!

Leyton Orient winning 3-2 away at Leicester who had future World Cup winner Gordon Banks in goal and future Arsenal captain and double winner Frank McLintock in defence.

Just checked and Newcastle were in the championship, Bedford in the Southern League.

Jock Wallace was in goal for Bedford.

Leyton Orient caused us some problems at Turf Moor and then in the replay at Brisbane Rd. in the replay before we won through. Defended for their lives at Turf Moor after going 1 up in the second half. Brian Miller got the winner away but only after we were under the cosh much of the game with centre forward, Dave Dunmore, causing us all sorts of problems. That was two seasons earlier on our way to the final.

Newcastle were in the second division, actually. Or at least, if Newcastle were in the Championship, then Bedford were in the National League!

Think he was here at Burnley some eight seasons, from '54 to '62, but being behind two of our greatest ever goalkeepers in Colin MacDonald and Adam Blacklaw he had very limited opportunities to play in the first team.

Just testing !.......but the first four are legit.

Towers, Meredith & Collins are there (but not ours)......Aldershot, Chesterfield & QPR, respectively.

From there you will see we were 1-0 up and Frank equalised.

Yes. I know he did. No 'McEvoy' shown on U21 or U18 players lists.

My mind might be playing tricks with me here but I seem to recall that Gerry McEvoy and striker George Coppock, who were both members of that FA Youth Cup winning team, were both still at St Theodores at the time.

Tony Kay must still have been in the reserves then learning 'his trade' from the likes of Layne and Swan.
Noticed too, that Esmond Million wasn't in goal for Bristol Rovers so they managed a good win. 💰💰💸💸
