Nigel Standige RIP
Nigel Standige RIP
Heard yesterday that Nigel has passed away suddenly. I didn't know him that well but I am sure many on here will. Stalwart of Walsden CC and Lancs League umpire. And a true Claret who I saw in the 110 and latterly the Miners before every home game. RIP pal.
Re: Nigel Standige RIP
Very sad. Travelled with Accy Clarets a few times with Sue.
Re: Nigel Standige RIP
Buggar - that is a real shame. Nice guy Nigel. Went on a couple of golf trips with him to Scotland - well, drinking trips with a bit of golf thrown in in Nigel's case! Sorted WCC's first beer festival which was a great success then and in subsequent years.
A top lad, great sense of humour, huge claret in every way - very sad to hear. RIP Nigel

Bloody hell. I was only talking to someone about him yesterday. I've known him for years and he posted on here as NIDGE 65.
Big Burnley fan as well as his cricket. Sad, sad news.

If it is the same guy he was a couple of years above me at Walton High School in Nelson. Although I didn't know him he was one of the faces you always saw at games, especially back in the dark days of the mid 80s when you almost knew the rest of the crowd by first name, there were so few attending. RIP Nigel Standige
edit: Just Googled his name and his Twitter (X) confirms it is the guy I am thinking of.

Yes, heard that yesterday too. Good mate of mine was Nidge. Known him since first year at Walton. Along with Shirty (RIP), used to get bussed in on the Cliviger/Worsthorne bus with all the posh kids.
Massive Burnley fan. Loads of posters on here would recognise him both home and away.
Would always have a few pints with him both pre and post match whenever I was up.
Lost for words really - a great bloke.

Re: Nigel Standige RIP
For those who might not recognise him - this pic has been posted on Twitter by Walsden Cricket Club. If you've been to away games, you will recognise him. My old friend Alan Beecroft used to call him Knock Off because he drove a white van and when Alan passed away in 2020, Nidge signed his tribute on here Knock Off.
RIP Knock Off.

RIP Knock Off.
Re: Nigel Standige RIP
Everyone is still in shock at Nigel passing away so unexpectedly
He could be found on a match day in the New Brewm upstairs room early doors and then Upstairs in the Miners since the 110 Club shut down
Sometimes he used to visit other pubs en route
He was a good friend of Dave Burnley and was often seen with him
I used to speak to Knock off or KO at every home game and some away
He was a great character and the picture showed his usual match day attire of Claret and Blue shirt
He had indeed followed Burnley through thick and thin and will be sorely missed
Another Good Man taken far too early
RIP Knock Off

Also - saw him about 6 weeks ago in Walsden CC. He used to call in The Queen in Cliviger, to see Alec and the rest of us and could often be found up and down the The Tod Valley.

Stunned at this news. I used to work with Nigel years ago and can echo what's said in the above tributes as to him being a lovely bloke. In fact the picture posted on here really sums him up as no matter what, he permanently had that smile etched on his face.

I'm terrible with names, better with faces, bumped into him a few times and remember ending up with Nige and Cottee drinking long into the night round Burnley after Beakeys funeral and you couldn't wish for better company. Shocking news, Claret to the core RIP Knock Off . Heartfelt commiserations to all family and friends

Re: Nigel Standige RIP
To use a cricketing analogy - which he would appreciate, I was totally knocked for six when I read this news on this forum yesterday.
I can't say that I am family or even a close friend, but fate decreed that when I swapped seats some 15 or so years ago I ended up sat adjacent to him in the Bob Lord.
In some ways we are /were very different people but we hit it off from day one, mainly because of our mutual passion for the Clarets and our love of cricket. (Particularly the Lancashire League).
All the tributes that have been paid to him on here are richly deserved and more. He was brilliant company, with a sharp mind and quick wit, and although we both had very different views on political matters we enjoyed the banter and respected each other's views and positions. He was also very kind and considerate. He had a very good knowledge and understanding of the game, and he would analyse a game astutely.
We would often arrive at a match with a quiz question for each other, often related to the match, and we enjoyed teasing out the answers. I used to enjoy putting him on the spot about the laws of cricket. I would come up with the most unlikely scenarios in match-play, and ask him what the umpire should do. (I would check it out in advance). Those who knew him as Lancs. League umpire will not be surprised to learn that he was correct every time.
Unlike me, he went to the vast majority of away games, in fact in the Dyche era, up until Covid, he rarely missed a match home or away.
To say that he was not a fan of the B*****ds - as he always called them, was an understatement. He had an APP on his phone that told him exactly how many days, hours and minutes it was since we last lost to Blackburn! As things have turned out I'm so pleased that that record was maintained with our recent draw. That clock is still ticking, but sadly time has run out for our dear friend Nigel. A true Claret.
A life cut short but one lived to the full. Attending home games will never be the same again, and I'm so relieved that we are not at home this weekend. I could not have faced going along and seeing the empty seat beside me.
RIP Nigel and thanks for all the good memories.

Re: Nigel Standige RIP
Very sad news, RIP Nigel. Like everyone else who knew him, that has come as a shock.
I live around the corner from him and walk my dog past his house 3 times a day. An odd time during his working week, he'd pop home in his works White Van. We last spoke outside his house about 2 weeks ago. A big man, who was quietly spoken and a MASSIVE home and away Burnley fan.
