DAB Radio in car

Post by bobinho » Wed Oct 30, 2024 8:35 am

Hi everyone,

Had enough of that Zoe Ball fella, so I need some more stations to choose from in the car. I’d like to get radios 4, 5, 6 and absolute/smooth country but my radio is the standard AM/FM fitment. Id like to get one of those DAB adaptors that will allow me to access a bigger choice.

Can anyone recommend something that won’t break the bank or have wires everywhere please?

I’m driving a Nissan Navara and the radio isnt the type you can just pull out and slot another in its place.

Thanks in anticipation of your suggestions.

does it have a aux input?

i use a Amazon Echo Auto and its genius. Connect my phone to it and can play whatever radio channels i want, just with a quick "Alexa, play talksport" etc..

What year /model Navaro?

They are descent but all depends on where you live. If your heading over the tops of the moors or in valleys it's likely cut out quite a bit Vs FM. Major towns / cities you'll likely have no issue

Do you know if Radio Lancs works on that on a Matchday?

My car radio is **** so I listen to radio/podcasts from my phone through cars Bluetooth.

Only issue is if I’m not at the match and wanting to listen to commentary of the game, as it’s not via DAB, Radio Lancs is on a “web blackout” so can’t listen to it.

DAB signals have improved through the years. I recently drove all the way to Devon without losing Planet Rock once.

I can't receive it in Skipton, however..

Pretty good in Burnley from what I remember.

it streams off the web, so unfortunately it's likely still blocked

If you like your classic rock, I recommend searching for a channel called 24/7 Classic Rock. No adverts whatsoever, just continuous music.

Absolute Classic Rock is what I listen to although the Lancashire DAB signal seems to have been removed so only the national one is available which dips out in certain areas, especially near the Turf

I don't suppose you or anyone will know 4:20 but what on earth would the business model for that one be?

If they're running 24/7 music with no adverts then to my mind there is only cost, no income?

That's a question I ask myself every time I get in the car and put it on. The playlist is quality, I've rarely heard a song repeat. From classics to obscure album tracks, live performances, 3 minute popular hits to 15 minute live jams. It's as though somebody with a vast, eclectic playlist just pressed the 'broadcast' button and left it at that.

Yes, it much better than it used to be, but what I can't understand is why the Times Radio reception is so poor. I come across loads of DAB blackspots for that station, and it's in areas where other stations don't have a problem.

My Ford Focus Sync loses TalkSport in several places between Padiham and Boston via M62 or Woodhead but last weekend I used my BiL's Discovery for the same journey and never lost the signal once.

Unsure now if it is DAB signal problem or the lack of a booster in certain vehicles. I previously had a BMW and changed the Audio for DAB and couldn't receive anything until I had a booster fitted.

DAB+ is the answer. It gets more stations, including Boom Radio

One of our cars loses radio lancs signal in places the other car doesnt, both are factory fitted DAB radios

Don’t bother. DAB radio is shocking in cars. My wife insists on using it but it’s awful when it’s playing a song you like and just goes off till it’s finished. It really gets me shouting at the radio, which my wife thinks is hilarious. I even missed the conclusion of pop quiz a couple of weeks ago. Infuriating.

Snap ...

Or you are listening to the commentary of a match on a Saturday Lunchtime heading to TM, and every couple of miles along A682 from LP to Barrowford (just as something interesting happens) "SILENCE" I hate bloody DAB Radio in cars

My car has a pioneer DAB radio and it is amazingly good. Loads of stations and never drops off. I’d be checking the DAB antenna if reception is poor.

Agree. In the main with modern day radios it's not a massive problem time to time temporarily it's lost but regained fast enough unless you are in the middle of nowhere but you should have am as backup. 909 & 1089 are always preset with quick tune if needed with local dab failing FM frequencies. Not knowing what's going on you'd have to be extremely unlucky or ill prepared with backups.

I have a Navara and I have a Pure Highway. It works well but there is no info, just the station name. Had to fit a new 12v socket as the one factory fit is permanently on.
