Does anyone have any idea why our club badge came to be how it is and more importantly I have always wandered who sort of invented or designed it.

In 1934, then manager Tom Bromilow thought that it would be a good idea for Burnley to have a club crest like his home town club Liverpool. The club ran a competition through the local paper to design and weave a badge with the winning entry being chosen as the official club badge.

Tom selected the winner himself and it was a woman who worked at the Queen St Mill (cant remember her name). In 1935 it offically became the first club badge of Burnley FC

I'm looking at a picture of the early 60s championship winning team, their shirts have a badge on. Was it just referred to a team badge in those days?

I was more interested in the dates different badges were used, which seems to be backed up by the post which appeared whist I was posting the article

Other than the colour code (not sure if they are correct) and trade marks, it is hundreds of words that has nothing to do with Burnley FC - guess everyone's interesting is different.

It was indeed 1973. The club ran a competition to design the new badge and it was won by a gentleman called Edward Jolleys who lived in Ashton On Ribble. (And this is true unlike that Tom Bromilow rubbish posted by the usual suspects above).

We used the County Borough Coat of Arms in the 2009/10 season. That wasn't anything to do with getting into the Premier League but was added to the kit that year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of winning the league although in the title winning season we had no badge on the shirt.

Because we'd been in the Premier League, it was Brendan Flood who thought it was worth keeping that badge but we changed it, added Burnley Football Club on the bottom and adopted it as the new club badge.

Indeed. The graphic above (BarlickClaret I think) which shows the history of the badge on the shirt... the 1983-1987 "BFC" version, I suspect was used to save money on cheaper embroidery, rather than a deliberate attempt to change the club badge.

I'm less clear on the current update with the monochrome claret/white version. I remember seeing a comment that this version was mainly for use on screen, rather than a belt-and-braces update to the official crest - but I don't think I've seen many versions of the coloured one recently. (I actually approve of the change. The colours were rather garish, and the blue/yellows clashed.)

Quite wrong. As I’ve said, the badge worn in the 60s was the County Borough of Burnley Coat of Arms and did not have Burnley Football Club written underneath.

I’ll repeat, the first club badge was produced in 1973 and remained the club badge until 2010 after which came the current one which the owners are now systematically getting rid of.

I reckon sooner or later we'll have another 'new' badge / logo / emblem. None of our old ones really fit the bill for a modern, clean brand. Like it or not, that's where we'll probably end up. Can't say I'm too fussed about it either way.

Owners can’t ditch club badges but ours have done it very cutely in stages. Whether you are fussed or not, it’s taking away our identity.

Well I like the embroidered full colour badge. This thing with all the colour ducked out is an abomination and the owners should get to understand that this is one the league's founder members and we should be honoured on everything we do. Not treated like some logo company.

I'd agree, if the badge had been around since the club was founded

But if I read all the above correctly, the one that's been changed by these owners has only existed since 2010. Hardly a significant part of our history
