It's awful, as has been the case several times this season.

Still don't want VAR though.

Another one where everyone in the stadium sees it and the officials don’t. Incredible decision.

The ref for the Liverpool v Villa game has made 2 very odd calls in the first 30mins

Sooner live with this shite than have idiots get it wrong after watching it over and over again.

Only seen the goal from Nunez which was a very good advantage from the referee.

The main issue and the thing that will eventually kill off football is the human element involving referees.

They WILL make mistakes and that doesn't fit with the ultra efficient SKY product.

The FA made a half hearted attempt with the Respect Campaign but it was too little too late.

Especially since Covid the levels of abuse has reached new lows due in part to a social system that doesn't support respect for others, rather to see how they can become a victim.

Its a very concerning situation largely ignored by everyone including the FA.

The referees in our local league are in their 60's and 70's and still reffing because no one wants to do it....if it wasn't for them the league would fold.

There are no referees coming through, therefore the standard will go down, its not rocket science.

It will continue to happen as everyone ignores the situation.

It looked like a good advantage at first, but form the angle behind the goal you can see the ref indicating “no foul” not advantage

The other was when he blew after Watkins was judge to have dived in the area, yet he didn’t get booked for it

On the new refs point, not sure where you are based, but we do have young refs coming through in East Lancs, but obviously they are learning.

I know quite a few people that have enquired and expressed interest in doing the ref course, but they are held that infrequently, that by the time they come round they are fully booked

New referees arrive all the time but sadly there is a very low retention rate.

TBH I don't blame them, I wouldn't do it now.

Poor decision

But given the behaviour of players week after week, playing for fouls, diving and cheating then what do we expect ?

Players (and the game in general)are ultimately accountable for this and the reason we have VAR

Bristol have had some very dodgy decisions, the goal at Preston plus this, they are very fortunate or the league have deliberately put refs in who are sympathetic to the idea of a West Country city club getting to the promised land, who knows ? Very very dubious decisions.

All that is wrong with football has come from the players and players alone. Diving, cheating, attempting to get players booked and sent off, something that seems more important than actually scoring a goal. They try to con referees at every opportunity. Referees then get scrutinised to the tenth degree by, yes you’ve guessed it, EX PLAYERS!!
Then you get onto club finances. Players paid millions of pounds, their agents paid millions of pounds. Clubs in the “richest” but most morally bankrupt league in the world, held to ransom by these players. Money that could secure football for everyone going into the pockets of the already rich spoilt brats, and the six or so clubs that demand more than their share. Because it’s all about them and not sport! Sport? They wouldn’t have a clue of the meaning of the word. It’s money greed and themselves only.

I agree with regard to the money in the game destroying the roots - but I forget that every weekend when I want to watch the game I still go - I'm addicted to it as we all are

The thing is, I’m no longer addicted to it. I can take it or leave it.
I still renew my season ticket every season, however I’m not really bothered if I miss a few games. Years ago if I couldn’t get up to the Turf or to an away game I would be pacing up and down anxiously thinking that the match I was missing was the most important thing at that moment in my life. I don’t get that feeling anymore, the appeal is slipping away.
It’s also the same with Premier League or Champions League football, I just can’t be arsed to watch this over hyped product. And yes that is what top level football is now, a product all about money.
I haven’t got too many years left on this planet now, it’s perhaps time to spend my leisure time productively and actually spending weekends with my wife and kids and grandkids. It’s probably an age thing but football isn’t what is was, or what I used to enjoy anymore. UTC.

It’s a really interesting point you make Jamesy. I’m in my mid 40’s, and I too have far less interest in Football nowadays.
I think the issues for me are the ridiculous costs for shirts and tickets for example, all to fund the ridiculous salaries players earn whilst very few of them actually give a s##t about the club they play for.
That and the fact that the Premier league has become unsustainable for clubs like ours hence the yo-yo effect for many who go up before coming straight back down again.
I think this problem was summed up perfectly on here when someone posted ‘upon promotion can we take the money but stay in the Championship?’

There are new refs in the junior game, certainly U7s but whether they stick it out is another thing. Even in the earliest age group people don't let them get on with it "reffff" 😔

Not sure it's just an age thing.

I'm 32 and the glittery light that football once was has certainly dimmed to say the least.

I look around at the antics of so called best players in the world like Vinicius Junior and the example they are setting. I look around at the money and the shear disregard for the rules and financial fair play. We've seen teams try to bully the league and force another breakaway.
We even saw our own club Vote in favour of keeping the money towards the top last season.

There is a lack of respect and integrity in football that is draining.

The game is so fast now perhaps an official behind each goal specifically for goal mouth incidents is the answer, Stoke would have a penalty, weour goal at WBA would have stood.

Whilst I agree with much of the sentiment on this thread - lack of respect, cheating, money - I do not blame the players. They take the money that's offered - and if we are willing to pay to watch football on TV it's right they get their fair share - and they do what they are told.

It is managers that can clean up the game. They and their coaches must be the ones that encourage cheating and it starts on coaching courses.

In the 1990s I went on the lowest FA coaching course and we were told by a one of our teachers who claimed to be a Chelsea youth team coach that, for example, a centre half should give a little nudge to the centre forward before he attempts to head the ball (exactly as Anthony looked like he was doing at WBA). Ironically later we had a rough lesson on The Laws of the game.

Whilst I don't blame players, they still carry out the cheating. I can't have much respect for these people not to mention the example they give to youngsters.

As for refs, if they are well paid then it would be worth keeping going but why they have to put up with all the crap I don't know. Unlike many I think they are doing their best in very difficult circumstances. Errors are made of course but many on here are completely unforgiving and, frankly, plain biased. Managers complain about them but have set the scene for ref's shortcomings. They alone can change things. It wouldn't mean there were no refereeing mistakes but it would make life easier for them. Of course managers won't want to do that. They see an advantage in cheating.

Despite all this I still enjoy watching football on TV but it's mostly appreciating fine play. For non Burnley games if there is too much cheating I turn it off. For Burnley I have to watch but I find I don't get overly upset whatever the score. I can still watch us this season because I see some potential whereas in the end I gave up with some of Dyche stuff. I loved the Kompany Championship season - well who didn't.

My mate is a Stoke fan and I bumped into him last night and he was playing heck about this non-decision.

I thought he was perhaps being a bit over biased (as we all tend to be) but that is ridiculous. You see the reaction from players and hundreds in the crowd behind that something was amiss. In the old days the ref would stop the game and buy some time and run over to chat with the linesman, Don’t see that nowadays.

What then? An extra linesman on each side? Another field Ref?, one for each end of the pitch? Top grade Aussie rules has 10 (yes, ten) umpires per match. There's 4 boundary umpires, 2 goal umpires, and four field umpires. There'll also be a few reserves in case of injury.

It was, several years ago, and not once did they ever get involved to “ give “ anything, or overturn a howler from the ref. It was a joke.

They happen should do what cricket does and let the captain have 2 reviews in a game and still keep the review if it’s succesful.

Did you see the little snake from Chelsea telling the ref that an Arsenal player had blood on his face?
