Last minute penalty winners

Post by Silkyskills1 » Sun Nov 10, 2024 10:27 pm

Unique for us? I've been following us for a very long time but I can't seem to recall a winner like that today. Remember Ronnie Moran scoring a winning penalty against us for Liverpool in a 4th round FA Cup replay at Anfield in February 1963 with around 30 seconds of extra time left. Can't recall any others for the opposition and can't recall any for us. Can anyone help?

Chris Wood against Barnsley in the cup a few years ago springs to mind

Arsenal scored one at their place a few years ago. We equalised in injury time then the ref gifted them one.

Gordon Harris 1967 ish vs Manchester United.
Not sure it was a winner or an equaliser.

Another definitely not a winner because Alan Stevenson saved it was at Brentford in 1981?ish. A 0.0 draw duller than even the Preston game this season!

Again not a penalty winner but a save, but didn't Marlon Beresford save a last minute penalty by John Aldridge for Tranmere Rovers at home against them in 1994? Think it was a 1-1 draw

Do you mean Alex Elder's last-minute penalty versus Man U at Turf Moor in 1965-66? We won 3-0. What followed was a full-scale battle between both sets of fans on the pitch. The most notable feature of which was the rest of the crowd's reaction: everyone staying behind to roar them on.

No QN. Definitely Bombers goal, almost cost me my bobble hat initially nicked off my head on Fulledge Rec then the main car park. United won the league that year and it was late in the season

Not a winner but Barnes scored an injury time penalty equaliser v Southampton about 5 years ago - i think Crouchy won the pen

Yep- Aldridge instigated the stuttered run which was actually not legal back then, and he rarely missed.

Again, not a winner but got us a priceless point.
Leighton James, 90th minute penalty to equalise against Torquay.
14th April 1987.

Not a penalty but George Oghani scored a last minute winner against the same opponents, Swansea on September 5th 1987.

It was at the same Bee Hole end and as a caveat, he did hit it from the penalty spot region :-)

It was also the same result as we won 1-0.

Most fans were right behind it as we made the long walk from the Longside thinking it was going to be a dull 0-0.

No better feeling when he smashed it into the net.

We won the next game 1-0 in the last minute again in a Friday night match at Tranmere when Paul Comstive scored.

I was thinking about that goal in the 2nd half with the hope that history would repeat itself. My dad left the ground thinking Comstive had scored, I was only 14 at the time however was already taller than my dad so could see it was Oghani.

4th Feb 1966 but it wasn't a winner. Definitely Bomber & definitely last minute but United were 1 up so it gave us a point.

Paul McGee penalty to give us a 3-2 win at Ashton Gate in November 1981. We took an early lead but went 2-1 down not long after half time. From then on we were superb. McGee equalised with about 10 mins to go and then with the clock ticking down we launched a lightning counter attack which saw City’s Swedish international keeper, Jan Moller, bring down Brian Laws in full flight. My memory may be defective but I think that Clive Thomas was the ref. Anyone else on here at that game?

I was there that day. We played really well. Went on an Executive Coach with lunch provided. I think it was organised by a guy called Bob who had a shop on Parliament Street.

Bob Langston who also worked at the club in the old development office. The coach was club run and was how I got there.

2 of the 3 furthest forward Clarets in one of the photos are full backs Brian Laws and Andy Wharton
