That’s really good hoosier. May I ask, is your house a new build with the latest insulation or if not have you carried out your own in house insulation.
Beddie, it was built in 2005 so guess it's reasonably new, but no special insulation that I'm aware of. In fact the patio doors has a bit of air coming through when it's really windy. So doubt it's anything to write home about.
However as I work from home, my office is in the lounge area and I have the TV on pretty much all day, which gives out heat. If I put my hand on the back of the TV it feels like about the same as a radiator on low. Plus my laptop gives off some heat as well, so perhaps that helps. And of course, the outside temperature is apparently 11c so not the freezing temperatures you sometimes see at this time of year. I only have the hot water on for around 20-30 minutes in the morning, so hope I can keep this going until March!

We live in a flat which is naturally a bit warmer than a house, but the temperature inside never dropped under 15 degrees at all last winter, even when it was in the minus range outside.
That said, the construction quality here is miles above the UK. Our external walls are a good 35/40cm thick with hefty insulation which keeps it warm in winter and cool in summer. We also have one side of the flat that is south west facing and has a load of windows which give us some good solar gain in winter.

Nearly always have ours on, maybe a few weeks in summer we don't. The house is 200 years old with thick stone walls. Mind you, we've only got 4 radiators and usually at least 1 is either turned off, or set low. Normally the stat is 21.

Cold one this morning, 16.1 when I got up at 7:00, I’ve just put it on. Being a bit more choosy when and for how long it goes on.

I’ve walked a couple of miles this morning for a dental appointment and I can confirm it’s cold out. I’ve no heating on in the house but that’s only because I’ve got people in fitting some new doors.
It’s to get much colder next week.

Cue the weather presenter screeching “temperatures overnight set to get as low as minus fifteen” and only when the weather map comes on screen do you realise that’s in the Scottish Highlands
They love to highlight the extremes of temperature even though very few are actually due to experience it.

For the Earth globally that may well be true but temperatures this summer seemed lower than average in the UK with no prolonged heatwaves as I recall. The past month has seen a distinct lack of sunshine. The geraniums are still hanging on fearing the first hard frosts.

Interesting as I think this year feels quite warm at this time of year. I still wear my shorts on the way out.

If snow is in the forecast for next week dozens of BBC reporters will be on standby ready to rush to the first location that reports lying snow. Positioning themselves on motorway bridges and at council gritting depots to give the nation first hand reports. At least it will make a welcome change from Trump.

Enlighten me. Every late autumn a thread appears on this forum about turning on your heat and how long you leave it on for, etc. I’ve always been bemused with the thread, is this because the cost of heating a home is exorbitant, is it because many homes don’t have sufficient insulation, some other reason? In my part of the world we typically set the thermostat at our preferred temperature and leave it alone to turn on and off as necessary, same goes for AC during the cooling season. A ‘smart’ thermostat can be programmed to turn on/off as needed. I’m curious to know why you guys don’t do the same? Obviously you typically don’t need AC though.

20.5c in the office today. Just the TV and laptop giving off heat. According to the weather it's 9c outside.
The big TV seems to be acting as a radiator.

You're right first time essentially ....the cost of heating the house has increased a LOT since kindly Uncle Vladimir invaded Ukraine ...so people now really think twice before getting the boiler working.

Mine was on most of the day yesterday and will be today other than for a couple of hours when I am out. It's currently minus 2 outside here. It will feel like summer at the weekend when the temperatures go up to about 8.

It's getting colder. Minus 5 this morning in the car. The CH is staying on all day even though we are both out at work. I've reduced the room thermostat down to 15 though. I'm £400 in credit so I'm spending it when it's needed.

It's set at 18 degrees, if it's cold enough it comes on, when it's warm it doesn't come on.

The Government recommendation set by their panel of 'experts' used to be 22 Deg but dropped to 18 Deg because of the energy 'crisis'. They honestly must truly believe the public are gullible and thick as the proverbial stuff that pigs produce. I live in an old terrace where 18 Deg is no use once we have single figures outside and I don't like walking around like Scott of the Antarctic indoors so it's 20 Deg on my thermostat to try and keep the chill away. My heating allowance has been snatched from me so it's going to cost but why be cold in your own house?

Usually have the thermostat set at 21c whenever we're at home. We work too hard to be sat feeling uncomfortably cold when we're not working, so cost be damned. I do realise that's a fortunate position to be in, and really do feel for those who struggle having to make a choice between heating and eating at this time of year.

I try to keep ours around 21 degrees but will still wear a jumper, must be an age thing, I've got into the habit now of only having the rads on full in the bedroom, lounge and bathroom as it's the only rooms we use unless the grandchildren stay then we fully heat the other bedrooms and spare room. Terrible how pensioners though are now choosing heating or eating in some cases, it's just so unfair.

Not just pensioners. Even working ages families have to make those choices, especially those on low/minimum wage.

Yes, and it’s even more galling that the government stated that there would be no energy price rises if they got into power and this magical £300 reduction on average bills appears to be six years away now.
As you say, many working people/families have got choices to make regarding heating their properties. Difficult times ahead.

I have to admit this will be the third (maybe the fourth) winter when I've opted to wear more in the house. Always have a jumper on now in the colder months with the huge prices that have hit us. I'm thankfully not in the eat or heat situation just now but you can eat more cheaply and I've taken that option. I certainly won't be sat in the house and cold.

The cost of heating is a joke, lots of countries subsidise it, I get the green agenda and the move away from gas, but when you look at the money wasted on vanity projects and the tax avoidance endemic in this country surely keeping people warm should be a priority.
That said when I was a kid we had single glazed windows that froze solid even the white condensation absorbing strips nearly everyone had in those days froze, we had one coal then gas fire for the whole house, and sadly it looks like lots of families will go back to that which is criminal.

Heating on here in southern Spain, parka ready as it’s down to 17 at night & 23/24 in the day, still in short sleeves & shorts on the golf course.

electricity is pretty cheap over here in Spain & i average for 4 bed house, heating, air con & dryer is €152 per month. Went back for the Swansea game & stayed in the prem inn in Macclesfield & the heating in set & locked at 17, slept in clothing & they charged me €132 per night for the privilege. I complained & they gave me a 2 bar oil radiator.

A house? You were lucky to have a house! We used to sleep in one room, 26 of us. And half the floor was missing. We were all huddled in one corner, for fear of falling....
Sorry, I just had to do it...

A house? You were lucky to have a house! We used to sleep in one room, 26 of us. And half the floor was missing. We were all huddled in one corner, for fear of falling....
Sorry, I just had to do it...
What's a floor ?

Heating on here in southern Spain, parka ready as it’s down to 17 at night & 23/24 in the day, still in short sleeves & shorts on the golf course.

electricity is pretty cheap over here in Spain & i average for 4 bed house, heating, air con & dryer is €152 per month. Went back for the Swansea game & stayed in the prem inn in Macclesfield & the heating in set & locked at 17, slept in clothing & they charged me €132 per night for the privilege. I complained & they gave me a 2 bar oil radiator.

Makes you wonder why everyone hasnt moved there.
