The Angel has gone now too and doesn’t look to be re-opening.
Was probably one of the busiest and best pubs in Burnley for years.

Thank you, it was the Rifle Volunteers.
Thank you to the other posters who have chipped in too.
Re: Lost Pubs of Burnley
I drank on Accrington Rd in the 70s and 80s.
Did not go in angel a lot because it was known as an old man's pub, good beer though.
Only came busy when the alma and fleece closed I think.

The Accy Road pub crawl starting at Rosegrove Unity was legendary, sign of the changing times that there is only the Woodtop left ( and that was closed for a while)

Anyone recall the name of that pub/night spot that used to be on Keirby Walk directly opposite the Keirby hotel, first building on the block adjacent to what is now Continentals cafe?
Re: Lost Pubs of Burnley
Part of my family ran the Snowball after the war. Robert or James Pilkington were my uncles and I think whichever it was lost, his licence for serving after hours. Went to morecambe and opened a b&b.

I worked at Zanzibars for about 4 years. Run by a lady called Bedellea (sp?) Foulds who also had Blueberries in Nelson. Nice lady. She was connected to some Salford boys who had money in both pubs. No one dare touch them. She made the mistake of buying out the Salford lads (therefore losing their protection) and Blueberries especially came under fire when Equinox opened.Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2024 9:40 pmAh, yes, think it was Zanzibar- thanks!

Nightclubs in Nelson had a propensity for burning down in the 1990s didn't they? Blueberries went up in flames when Equinox opened, which also succumbed to flames a few years later. Hope they were both well insured......ants_g wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 5:09 amI worked at Zanzibars for about 4 years. Run by a lady called Bedellea (sp?) Foulds who also had Blueberries in Nelson. In the early 1900’s there were over 300 licensed premises in Burnley! One Street apparently had more pubs on it than houses.

It used to be said that you could go into a different pub or club every day of the year if you went in one of 'em twicethomaspaine wrote: ↑Mon Nov 18, 2024 7:12 pmIn the early 1900’s there were over 300 licensed premises in Burnley! One Street apparently had more pubs on it than houses.

There was a bar in Padiham which operated briefly and was located between the Starkie Arms and Molly Rigby's. It was called 'The Wine Bar' but never sold any wine.Blatherwickstattoo wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 1:58 pmThe Brit

I think the Pub/Club trade will be gone over the next 20 years, if it lasts that long even.

Re: Lost Pubs of Burnley
When I was tiny in the mid 60s I remember my dad taking me to a pub somewhere behind the Black Bull, Marsden Road way.
I called it the Naked Eye, but I could be totally wrong. It also could have been a working mens club.
Any ideas?

The Naked Eye was on Kings Causeway, so indeed sort of behind the Black Bull. Think the building is a care home now

The naked eye was on the road from brierfield upto nelson golf club, think it was a club more than a pub, and the lanehead club was on the slip Rd turning right before black bull, this is now 3 or 4 town houses.A.Claret.Fan wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 2:32 pmWhen I was tiny in the mid 60s I remember my dad taking me to a pub somewhere behind the Black Bull, Marsden Road way.

There was a pub on Kibble Bank estate called Lanehead. Just up from the Black Bull. I think it’s a Spar shop now. Shame as it was a real local pub for the estate residents. Everyone knew each other.

Yeah it changed its name to Hillingdon Arms after a change of ownership. In the eighties it definitely was the Lanehead Pub.

No mention of the Concord? That place deserves a thread of its own. Murders, sex, stolen goods. Everything and everybody went in there. The list of hard men is still frightening to read. Need someone with a shotgun? Ask for Colin B. The Sykes brothers were tough guys, plus every "name" in Burnley.
The Ribble Club also was some place.

Hillingdon Arms/Lanehead or whatever, opened up when I was in my teens in the 1980s. It was always dead whenever we called in for a pint on a week day night. The Black Bull just down the road was much busier.
Re: Lost Pubs of Burnley
Thursday night Disco down the Black Bull was a great night for scouting out the local girls. We used to alternate Thursday nights , pay day, between the Bull and The Prairie as a lot of student nurses went in the Prairie.

Aye, Ribble Club wasnt for the faint hearted, went in there a fair few times on my way into town. Pretty much opposite the police station but a fair amount of lawlessness in there.Goalkeeper wrote: ↑Sat Apr 19, 2025 7:59 amNo mention of the Concord? That place deserves a thread of its own.
