Pork & Pepper Rolls and Savouries are the best thing they sell.

Nothing comes close to those things in any other bakery.

Such a shame, been around since before me. Unfortunately their prices are just not tolerable anymore. Their sandwiches are tiny for them price, I get it that's it a local competing against big chains but unfortunately it's the prices that matter to most people.

Used to love their sandwiches, particularly the New Yorker I think it was called, but the last time I went in I was shocked by the price and how much you got for that price.

Looking at the last accounts, although loss making, the Balance Sheet doesn't look too bad, so it's a shame it seems like a deal can't be found.

It's a shame it's come to this. I still use them from time to time, but only for their bread/baps. I gave up buying their sandwiches and pies. There are better sandwiches to be had elsewhere, at their price-point, and the same goes for the pies.

It's over a fiver for a large butty in there. Any local independent butty shop does better for cheaper.

Remember when they used to sell pork sausages on a Friday? Our mum would always buy a couple of pounds of them when calling in for weekend treats - bilberry/strawberry charlottes, custards and meringues.

I don’t mind a Gregg’s but always thought Oddie’s was far better.

My first job when I left school was an apprentice baker with WH Oddie. Very sad news to read but not really a surprise, just surprised it has lasted as long as it has. Their prices are very much on the high side, though the quality reflects this. You can't compare to a Greggs which is mass produced in a huge factory, frozen and shipped to stores. Oddies stuff is, or back in my day was, freshly made each morning for delivery into their shops.

Fairly sure stevie2112 who posts on here still works for Oddies - I met him when i worked there almost 40 years ago and last time I spoke to him he was still working there. I know the bakery manager was Asst Manager when i started so he must have 45 years service there. Sad news for an iconic local business but sadly a sign of changing times.

Not the case C&J. Its named after W.H. Oddie the founder in the last century. Until a few years ago it was run by Bill Oddie, a true gent, who really looked after his staff. Bill died and it passed to his daughter, I think. Bill was a stalwart at Calder Vale rugby club and a nicer fellow you couldn't hope to meet. Shame this, but they have found themselves up against supermarkets and big national bakers who don't necessarily use the same quality of ingredients and can save costs due to technology and less labour requirement. Although Oddie's prices might seem a bit topside, look at how ingredients and your power bill have gone up over the last couple of years. ..

Bill Oddie also played cricket for Nelson as an opening batsman. Our old friend from this board Eli played with him and joked that he only got a game because he brought the pies and cakes.

I think they have lost their way given their price-point regarding quality. Other bakeries turn out better produce re pies and sandwiches. Mill Town Pies just up the road from Oddies Colne Rd shop is one example. D.T Law's in Hassy. Alpe's in Clitheroe etc.

Having said that, their bread is top quality and well worth what you pay for. I would still buy their pies and sandwiches if I thought the quality was there for the prices they charge.

I really hope there is a takeover and as many jobs as possible can be saved.

There bread is superb. I was told that the Padiham shop had lost a lot of customers to the bakery in Lidl which when we all are watching the pennies makes sense.

No, but when birdie bill gave a talk on wildlife at Clitheroe Grand a few years ago the Lancashire Telegraph got him and bread Bill together for a photograph and story.

Well linked in rugby and cricket circles, not sure if the Eli comment about only playing because he brought the cakes was tongue in cheek, knowing him it probably was, but I seem to remember Bil playing well into his 50s for Reedley and a Nelson Leader comment about him getting better with age, like a fine red wine.

Birdie Bill did Who Do You Think You Are a few years back, convinced his family were from a long line of Brummies....... then found out that his roots were in Lancashire. From Clitheroe/Bowland if memory serves, so they could be related somewhere down the line.

Charlottes- they were delicious, I haven't heard that treat called a "charlotte" other than in Burnley. Used to love the bilberry ones and the apple ones. We used to get them from a corner bakers on Berry Street up Healey Wood, would just love a couple of them now.

I do not like local firms going under but I stopped going to Oddies about a year ago. I was shocked at the prices they were charging and if anyone ever took a look inside the sandwiches they bought they would be a little bit aggrieved at the amount of food they got for what they paid for. Unfortunately they started to get a bit greedy and it’s backfired.

Real shame that they are closing. I go in twice a week. Top quality produce.
Small businesses are under a lot of strain because of inflation.
I think we are now caught in a catch 22 situation with service businesses such as Oddies, pubs, cafes etc whereby it's not possible to earn enough profit to grow.

Remember going there in my childhood as parents sort of knew them. Last time I went in I thought it was a rip off. If there’s cheaper and better elsewhere in a cost of living crisis you have no chance so not surprised by this news.

When up I always pay a visit for their meat pies and potato pies. Both excellent products.

It's not the price, at least for me. It's that other businesses are selling better quality pies and sandwiches around the same price.
