And a big guess for Tranmere - Billy Rodaway

Or Alan Harper!aclaretinstevenage wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2024 8:15 pmSurely Everton will be Trevor Steven and Adrian Heath.
I’m going to guess at Leighton James or Kevin Young for Bury. John Clayton or Ian Muir Tranmere.
Vince Overson for Birmingham

I’m on the same fb group, always like these posts and when I flick thru I always like to see the names of players from the past who either left or joined.
Remember back to this day, my dad would take us to any local game, watched Doncaster win at Rochdale. The Snodin brothers were playing, both went onto bigger teams. Also recall small groups of each team’s fans invaded the pitch at full time and had a fight in the centre circle

Everton was Steven and Heath. Tranmere was John Clayton. Not Vince at Brum, think he was still with us in Nov 84?
Re: On this day
The Birmingham scorer surprised me, don’t remember him playing for them and a bit of a clue , he came back on loan in the late 80sHerts Clarets wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2024 8:56 pmEverton was Steven and Heath. Tranmere was John Clayton. Not Vince at Brum, think he was still with us in Nov 84?
Possibly one of a few players that played for all 3 Birmingham clubs

Re: On this day
The Bury player was not an ex Claret, he would appear for us on loan a couple of years after 1984
Scunthorpe player was not Ian Helliwell. This is probably one of the most tricky ones so far, this player made 3 appearances for us in the mid 1970s
Without naming him we have got the Birmingham scorer, which was England international, League Champion and European Cup winner Tony Morley who did return to Burnley briefly on loan in the late 1980s.
The Stockport player, like Morley, was one who had more than one spell at the club

Correct. Just the Scunthorpe scorer to get. I would never have got this and had to look him up to confirm he had played for Burnley

Bit of an error - the scorer for Scunthorpe does have links to Burnley, however just noticed it was an own goal so he was playing for Nuneaton Borough at the time.

The scorer for Scunthorpe, though an own goal playing for Nuneaton Borough was Richard Dixey.

An own goal from a Manchester United player in the Manchester Derby
Southampton
Sheffield Wednesday
Swindon Town

Our journey through the years stops off at 1977 this evening on a day the Clarets went down to 2-1 defeat away at Cardiff with Paul Fletcher on the scoresheet. Elsewhere players with a link to our club were in the scoresheet for their clubs at the time, but can you guess them? Their teams were:
Leeds United
Newcastle United
Bristol City
Oldham Athletic
Torquay United
Leeds United
Newcastle United
Bristol City
Oldham Athletic
Torquay United

Wasn't sure about Leeds as thought it could've been Brian Flynn but knew that Ray Hankin had left before him. NUFC would only think of TC & it had to be GG for BCFC...

Re: On this day
Not looked on FB today, after seeing it was Steve Taylor the other day scoring for another north west club, I’m going for Steve Taylor scoring for Oldham.
The Torquay one is intriguing me.

Steve Taylor is correct. Is that 2 or 3 times he has featured? Just the Torquay player to get....
Re: On this day
Steve Taylor certainly did the rounds!! Remember him scuffing a pen in an FA Cup game or scoring a winning pen in the round before ? Early 80s.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 10:06 pmSteve Taylor is correct. Is that 2 or 3 times he has featured? Just the Torquay player to get....
Taylor had a decent strike rate in the lower leagues at most clubs he played for, in his final spell at Burnley he looked pretty hopeless but could usually score a few goals,

Re: On this day
The scuffed penalty was v Sheff Weds FA Cup Quarter Final 1983. Scored one v Palace in the previous round. Played against us for Rochdale and broke Joe Neenan's cheekbone.
Re: On this day
Taylor took a pen in previous round v Palace after Cassidy missed one? Seem to remember Taylor scoring for Burnley against Rochdale.

He did indeed. With such a brave header. It think this was the only time I saw him make a header! Taylor’s penalty still gives me nightmares. I don’t have any doubt that we would have gone on to win had he scored it

Re: On this day
The 5th round game against Palace at The Turf was a replay and I THINK the penalty which won us the match was taken twice. Their keeper saved it initially, but the ref said he'd moved too soon and ordered it retaken and we scored. It caused a hell of a furore I know that and Palace fans wrecked a train leaving town after the match I seem to remember. That game put us into the 6th round against Wednesday and our famous missed penalty which this time wasn't reprieved!!

The On this day train pulls into the station in 1976 today, a day where the Clarets were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol Rovers, our goal coming from Peter Noble. Elsewhere there were a number of players with links to the Clarets who were in the goals for their clubs, but who were the goalscorers? Their teams were:
Manchester City
Newcastle United
Notts County
Luton Town
Chelsea
Bolton Wanderers x 2
