If your face fits your an International
England have long picked players from media darling teams who have been over hyped.Angel being the latest example
The progression through England junior ranks can guarantee a full cap.Traff is in line to break through as England's next keeper. Arguably, there are players who've made the full England team only to fail at the top level Also players guaranteed the shirt no matter how bad they perform Harry Maguire probably got half his caps on the fact he played for much loved Manure
Certainly he had some awful games and yet was constantly selected above far better cbs, Tarks being the obvious one

Re: If your face fits your an International
Which players have played for England seniors whilst playing in the Championship or lower?

Scored on his debut. Was that his only appearance?

Re: If your face fits your an International
Actually there is quite a substantial list and some quite recent too
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_E ... ision_club
Re: If your face fits your an International
So according to that list Wilfred Zaha in 2012 was the last outfield player from lower leagues.

Peter Taylor was playing for Crystal Palace in the third division when he got his first call up but that's a long time ago.

Re: If your face fits your an International
Not sure Lille is a media darling team and Angel, probably largely unknown, has looked very comfortable in the side.
Re: If your face fits your an International
Tarkowski is 32 and has only had 2 seasons as a top 10 PL player (with us). If he was that “good” he’d have played at a much higher level.
Lots of PL experience, easily available yet nobody decent has ever been interested.

Re: If your face fits your an International
I would've said he got them on the fact that he's always played well for England. The regular complaint/outcry about Maguire has most often been with regard to his getting selected despite appearing to be performing poorly for much loved manure at the time. However, having been so selected, HM's generally gone out and again played well for EnglandWoodleyclaret wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 9:37 am... players guaranteed the shirt no matter how bad they perform Harry Maguire probably got half his caps on the fact he played for much loved manure...

Re: If your face fits your an International
Players, especially defenders, often appear to play well for England because the opposition are usually a big step down from the Prem.
Re: If your face fits your an International
Has Pickford finished much higher during his career?

There is a stated preference for lads who have come through the system, for sure

Re: If your face fits your an International
Can't understand what point you are making when you say players from outside the Premier League rarely get picked for England?
That is bound to be the case surely as that is where all the best players play.

Re: If your face fits your an International
This is not a new thing as those old enough will know that the likes of Tony Currie and Rodney Marsh were deprived of caps because they were outspoken and didn’t fit into the system .
Re: If your face fits your an International
Tarkowski was rubbish when he got his opportunity at International level.
If you want to survive relagation then he's your man, if you want to win major tournaments...he isn't.

If memory serves (which it often doesn’t) he scored on his debut…. And never got a sniff again.

Re: If your face fits your an International
Bobby Robson called him up after he'd only played in the 3rd and 4th divisions for Wolves. That would never happen now.
He did alright too, stayed in the squad for a while and went to Italia 90 after one season in the 2nd division. Scored a great goal at Hampden.
Re: If your face fits your an International
Johnny Haynes was an England star, playing for 3rd division (now league 1) Fulham..

Interesting debate but I never mentioned lower league players getting selected

Re: If your face fits your an International
Burnley could hardly get any players capped, even when they were flying from the late 50s to the mid 60s. Brilliant players like Jimmy Adamson never getting capped, and other players just getting one or two caps

Two players who represented England in the 1950s while playing in division 3 were Coventry goalkeeper Reg Matthews and Bristol City inside forward John Atyeo.
