Sadly, he's not quite as clever, always a red card waiting to happen. Barnes knew how to avoid that trap, mostly.

He needs to learn how to wind up the opposition, but not be wound up himself.

Constantly breaking up play with tackles
Intercepting Bristol City passes and turning us from defence to attack very quickly.
Taking the ball off the defenders
Instigating triangles
Drawing fouls
Carrying the ball good yards
Hope that’s enough for now

We’d have won easily if the ref hadn’t let Bristol punch him up in the air for 10 mins and eventually lost his cool a bit.

Aside from shithousery, what he needs to learn, as do one or two others, is when to take a man on and when to play it safe.
There’s a proper player there though, once he matures a little and understands his strengths and weaknesses.

I thought he had a very decent game for 60 minutes. Our pressing was much more dynamic today and we moved the ball with more purpose and Hannibal was integral to that.
However, he did lose the ball several times from trying to do too much, and he unravelled a bit in the 10 minutes before he came off.

Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
He has all the tools to be a good player, his passing was dreadful today but he wasn't the only know (both sides but them in particular) so I'll put that down to conditions. Paying against him and Roberts can't be fun.
Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
Something I noticed today that I can't say I've noticed before is that he's absolutely feckin rapid. Maybe not quite as quick as Luca but he can't half shift once he gets his head down.
He played well today but I do wonder how he might fare carrying the ball from deep given our problems in transtion, probably the best suited to doing that along with Laurent.

I thought his passing was very good today. Plenty of sharp first time passing and as Gaz says, he showed that he's quick. His issue today was that occasionally he tries to do a bit too much himself.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 9:02 pmHe has all the tools to be a good player, his passing was dreadful today but he wasn't the only know (both sides but them in particular) so I'll put that down to conditions. Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
Let’s see how the stats back that up.
Mejbri made zero interceptions today.
He completed 1 successful tackle.
He had 1 successful dribbles. (4 failed dribbles).
On the flip side he was disposed the most of any Burnley midfielder. Dispossessed 3 times.
The stats back your statement that he was fouled a lot, but on the flip side he also fouled the most opposition players.
I thought Mejbri had a steady game and until the yellow card was quite decent.
But I’m not sure under any metric he was majestic

Spice,
This is where our slightly different takes perhaps meet: yes, he did occasionally give up the ball but his carrying helped us to stretch Bristol and it appeared to free us up a lot more than usual - were usually trying to thread needles in midfield.

Genuine question, how is a successful dribble defined in your source? Likewise, a successful tackle?

Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
I was very surprised so many of his passes were in the Anthony position around the half way right touchline.
What that did do was give us an extra man in that area and it caused them some problems. I am hoping that is a regular thing, moving some resources wider to give us more oomph in that area.
Agree with posters that his quick feet do help us at times.

Newcastle quotes stats and after watching that game then stats are ******** .Do the stats show how many times he was kicked in the area and how much Ed he energised the side ,and those 3 times he was dispossessed he was actually fouled .Hes been around a long time but he’s a character and could be a real star for us and he’s still only a kid.Get behind the lad.

I was the one who posted about frank the other day

That was almost a perfect away performance reminiscent of Liverpool in Europe in the 80 s
Another few of these and Scott grows his hair long again and the chrissy eagles song will be reverberating around turf moor again

Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
I find him so frustrating and don’t have time for all the histrionics to be honest. Winding up opposition fans and players doesn’t help us win games.
Clearly talented but he gives up possession far too cheaply.
I thought Cullen was superb yesterday but it goes unnoticed with some people because he doesn’t have big hair and spend all the game goading the opposition.

Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
The tempo was much improved over recent games, he was a big part of that. The midfield trio worked for the first 65 minutes. They've been tried before and not clicked so some tweaks have been made to get it functioning so well. Hannibal has huge potential. Yes, he overruns it at times currently but he is properly committed and skillful. His passing can be sloppy but he corrects his errors generally. Some of the dispossession stats come from fouls not called. There was an obvious one prior to his booking. Opinions are mixed where I sit but I'd take a player with his mindset over some of Vinny's signings.

Well said John. I often wonder what match some of our supporters are watching. It wasn't the prettiest of games, the conditions were atrocious but the application and effort put in by the whole group was first class.
It's performances like that which eventually secures promotion. City will take a fair few points from many of our promotion rivals so that was an excellent victory yesterday

Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
I agree and I think there’s room for a wind-up merchant in a successful side, but it has to be mixed in with a football contribution. I just think the shithousery becomes all he’s about for spells of too many games and he’s often let down by his decision making on the ball. He’s young and has time to learn, but he’s got to make more of a contribution if he ever wants to fulfil the potential that had him so highly rated at United earlier in his career.
It was the same with Ashley Barnes. Those final six months redeemed his reputation at Burnley and he left to universal gratitude, but it’s easy to forget that prior to that season and the few seasons that preceded it, he’d become a bit of a parody of himself. It was hugely frustrating for to watch him throw himself on the floor every time he felt a defender at his back and offer very little in the way of actual football. Thankfully he let his football do the talking more, whilst managing to maintain his loveable rogue approach, from November onwards and we all remembered he did actually have some ability.
Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
Personally from what I can see of Hannibal so far his main positive is that he seems to be very good when recieving the ball in a tight space or when a player is close. He has the ability to move his body one way and prod the ball the other. Lovely little nut meg last night from it.
His passing and end product have been hit and miss at times though. He almost looks a little nonchalant when playing forwards.

Re: Our new Ashley Barnes sh**housery expert.
We don't need a new one - we've already got Roberts.
Yesterday overall he did OK. In the first half he struggled to make some good passes in key positions, either over weighted or misplaced. In the second half he was much better and did quite a few good things including helping set up chances. One time he tried to pass it to someone for a shot whereas he might have been better shooting himself.
On his 'shithousery' he was doing OK until clattered by McNally. After that there was an occasional attempt to get McNally sent off. Other then that I don't recall much. It's clearly a known issue that is being worked on based on Parker's touchline chat and perhaps his coming out late at the start of the second half. The yellow card was being a bit over zealous and probably also an accumulation of things.
I see progress in his game and yesterday he played a good part in our performance.

Saw on Twitter somebody suggest he’s way better than Brownhill which I can’t fathom from what I’ve seen this season. The lack of respect Brownhill and Cullen get from some fans is mind boggling.
