Post by Burnley Ace » Wed Nov 27, 2024 10:10 pm

Hoping to tap on to the accumulated wisdom of UTC!

Anyone have a recommendation for an entry level TV projector.

Amazon has the
Epson CO-W01 Data Projector 3000 ANSI lumens 3LCD WXGA for £250
XGIMI Halo+ 1080P Portable Projecto For £230

Top one isn't a TV projector, it's for presentations, etc

Bottom one is ok if you want something portable but you'll need the room dark to get a reasonable picture and you're paying a premium for it being rechargeable.

You need to have a think about whether you want to use it when it isn't pitch black, permanent or portable, how far from the screen it will be, whether it will be pointing straight at the screen, etc

I picked up a Samsung Freestyle second hand for about £250 and that's a convenient portable one that you can set up in a couple of minutes but the room needs to be pretty dark.

I also got a big one second hand from eBay for about £100. One of these https://www.whathifi.com/epson/eh-tw3800/review Much better, brighter picture but it's a bit of a lump so I don't use it that often. There's lots of older but still capable projectors available cheaply second hand.

1080 isn't anywhere comparable to HD on a half decent tv either.

Good advice from Aggi there. Bought a very cheap VISSPL projector off Amazon 18 months ago based on the feedback ratings (they no longer do the model), it was about £125 with screen etc but similar models seem to have now come way down in price. Wanted it for the home bar to occasionally watch large screen football via firestick. Really can't believe how good it is for such a low price, very decent picture (room needs to be very dark as Aggi mentioned) and sound quality again very acceptable for the low price.

The daughter has this one, link below. I’ve attached her review.

We plug the sky box into it via HDMI, but it has all kinds of sockets on it, USB etc.
It also has blue tooth.. so if the internal speaker isn't good enough, you can link it wirelessly to a speaker. Sometimes this is good. But last week we did it and the audio/ visual was a couple of seconds out of sync so we went back to the internal speaker. Not always the case, but it's annoying when it is.
It has a fabulous "tilt (?)" Mode on it, so you can put it anywhere and still have it as a perfect rectangle on your projector screen.
What I mean is, a lot of projectors needs to be at the mid level of the projector screen to get a rectangular picture, but this one we have up against the roof, so it's "natural" shape is like how a child would draw a house roof because it's closer to the top of the screen than the bottom, so it's narrower at the top than the bottom, but there's a wheel on the side to pull out the top to rectangle it up. This doesn't stretch the actual tv picture though
