Best players you've seen so far in the Championship

Post by ecc » Fri Nov 29, 2024 6:18 pm

I think there was a thread on this subject but cannot find it.

The idea is: best opposition players you've seen playing against us or in other Championship games so far this season.

Of course, there are many players you'll have seen before who are "names" at this level e.g. first name that comes to mind is Josh Maja at West Brom. He didn't do much against us or rather we nullified him. But he's a pretty good player at this level.

The best I've seen is one we'll be seeing soon namely Ben Doak. A 19-year-old winger currently playing on loan (from Liverpool) at Boro he's impressed me hugely both for Boro and Scotland.

Another lad is Romaine Mundle, also a winger, who scored against us for Sunderland.

Not seen him since but the lad who played left-back for Rovers when we played them. He's on loan I think from a Prem side.

Beck - Liverpool.

Mine would be:

Souza at Sheffield United. Defensive mid. However he was poor last night!
Soutar at Sheff U - but he was poor last night too!
Cooper the goalkeeper of Sheff U.
Watson of Sunderland. First time I saw him last night.
Roberts at Sunderland
Doak at Middlesbrough
Solomon at Leeds
Sissoko at Watford
Vigouroux - Swansea goalkeeper
Bannan Sheffield Wednesday - he keeps going.
Cooper, Millwall centre back - unplayable against us but just solid.
Pandur, Hull goalkeeper. Better even then Muric for his outfield play.
Gibson - Plymouth centre back.
Borja Sainz at Norwich. He seems unplayable at times.
Dolan at Blackburn. Excellent against Middlesbrough.

I wonder how many of our players would feature on fans' lists of other Championship clubs who have seen us / played against us this season. I'd guess quite a few.

Esteve and Egan Riley would be the main two I’d think

Don’t think I’ve really watched a game outside of ours and I’ve not really been impressed with anyone.

Probably tells you about the standard of the league.

EDIT: Tell a lie - I was impressed with Solomon at Leeds when we played them.

I mean, yeah. If we’re including our players then absolutely. He’s the best player in the division by an absolute mile.

Trafford wouldn't be on anybody's list. Nobody knows what he can do. I could keep nets for us.

How many Watford games have you watched this season?

I saw one. PNE away. They got beat 3-0 and were dreadful.

I wonder which performances for PNE were particularly impressive from Cannon this season.

Yeah but we'd have gone 1-0 down yesterday

He made a superb 1on1 save at 0-0
And that isn't the first time this season either
He's also become very good at drawing the press in to play through the opposition. Last few games we've created some excellent chances as a result. I think the penalty yesterday started with Trafford essentially starting a counter attack by attracting a press and playing round them

That's a depressingly recurrent refrain from the clowns on this board:
Burnley concede lots of goals... Entirely Trafford's fault. Burnley only concede six goals in eighteen games... Good defence, nothing to do with Trafford.

Or perhaps the standard to which we've been playing... It'd difficult to impress when playing against good/well organised opposition

Made a cracking one on one save at Bristol city as well,Tricky Trev would’ve caught it and started a counter attack though.

And some of them want Parker gone with us 2nd in the table.

I’m not slagging Trafford, I’m thrilled with our back 4. He’s done nothing wrong all season but has rarely had anything to do.

A lot of that is down to the positions that he's taking up and how he and the defence are able to squeeze attacks.

His positioning has been really impressive this season, it's subtle stuff but make no mistake - everyone in that backline has been pivotal in our excellent defensive record. Especially CJ, Esteve & Trafford.

Trafford is part of a defence that have conceded 6 goals in 18 games. He's made saves that has made the 6 what it is. Nothing negative to say against him, he's been fantastic. I think due to his age, playing in the Championship has been good for him.

I was intrigued about him as I also thought he's looked incredible when I've watched him He has the same gait as Churlinov I thought, and that same sort of languid dribbling style although clearly he's got a bit more about him.

Anyway, Watford fans arent totally sold on him. All fart and no poo is the consensus, incredible at dribbling through people and breaking lines but too often fails to find an end product.
