Hows Bauress looking since his return from injury. Liked the little bits i’d seen of him pre injury and he was on the edge of the first team.

Balogun played Mendes in down the right and his cross shot went straight in

If one of them didn't score a hatrick I'll be disappointed.

Worrall was coaching some of his young team mates on positioning and general play first half.
Ekdal and Delacroix both neat and tidy without being tested too much.
Ekdal got a decent header in on a defensive corner. Definitely one of his best attributes.

Being an old sod and remembering a certain manager throwing all the kids into the 1st team such as Colin Blant and John Murray surely putting Westley on the bench for the first team is a win win situation ,if we’re losing then throw him on for 30 mins and if we’re well in front then get him on the pitch.

Yes plus a youth game about 16 or so years ago. We were 9-0 up with over 20 mins to go and didn’t score again.

True that, you usually see an average League Two side get the better of the biggest and best u21 sides in that Papa Johns thing. Different game at senior level.
Good point - out of the 8 Premier League U21s that entered the group stage only Aston Villa’s U21 made it through.

A big jump from U21 to League 1/2

Westley seems to score lots goals. Hes 20 … any chance he could step up to first team ??
He’s stepped up to the National League and struggled to get game time let alone score goals. The gulf between u21 football and first team football is huge.

U21 set ups are dead wierd for these tournaments because typically the top talent have already gone out on loan or broken through to the first team.

So it’s almost like your seeing there B teams in this tournament

Which really begs the question of why do we bother?
Would funds be better allocated elsewhere?
Should we scrap the whole academy structure and would the club see any negative impact at all if we did?

It would be very interesting to see the profit and loss in regards to the academy.

*I'm not advocating we do this just an interesting point really.

We would only need to unearth one Dwight McNeil every few years to make it more than worthwhile.

It has made some money in recent years with sales of players too so I would suggest it's running profitably.

That reminds me of the Bond season, 6-0 up against Port Vale in the first half but in the end leaving Turf Moor disappointed with 'only' a 7-0 win.

Wasn’t it against Birmingham that Louis Page scored 6 in an 8-1 win in the thirties

Absolutely agree re the gulf between CT, however I've always believed it also comes down to how badly you want it, which can't be seen unless their given their big chance, sometimes it just has to be risked and just maybe in Westley's case he feels he's just being farmed out and ignored without getting that big chance, although not seen him first hand but fair to say seems one of the closest we have.

I used to live down near Woking and watch them in the Conference (National League) back when Burnley were in the 3rd tier. To be honest I couldn't see a massive difference in the level. I was told that there were a lot of players who were Solicitors, University Lectures, Accountants and the like who didn't want to play full time but were every bit as good as the players in the fourth tier. I don't know if that's still the case. When you look at the clubs down there more than half are ex league clubs. There are not many teams who go down and come straight back up but the majority who come up do pretty well in League Two.

It’s a huge gulf. I don’t think for one second he will feel he’s being farmed out. He needs to make the most of his loan opportunities and move up the levels with them.

You are right, and i guess we are covering the cost of running the academy. But it would be such a pity if our only intention was to bring through the occasional big money (McNeil) type of player to sell on.

We brought McNeil through to play for us. We got three and a half full seasons from him in the first half. The intention is always to try to bring through players to play in the first team but to be able to sell players alongside that who can make money for us is also part of it.

Yes. Standing out like a sore thumb in what was then the under-23s.
