Misused phrases

Post by JohnMac » Sun Dec 08, 2024 1:56 pm

I was thinking about misused words and phrases after reading an on-line post earlier. Some of these make me chuckle (or cringe) :D

Tow the Line (Toe)
For all Intensive Purposes (Intents and Purposes)
On Tender Hooks (Tenter)
Chomping at the Bit (Champing)

Anything with OF instead of HAVE

Misused word....
Scenario.....it's a theoretical or possible event or situation......not something that is going to/has happened.

"Literally"

From what I found when I did a spot of rearch a while back is that the original and strict definition of "literally" was to only emphasize that something is true in the most precise and direct sense - so without exaggeration. So if somebody said, "I literally died laughing" - it means you had to go into resus and have someone bring you back to life!

Yet due to so many people not understanding the true definition, dictionaries over time changed its meaning, to also mean mean to exaggerate something for comedy effect. I still class it as misused though.

One of Mrs Croydon's favourites - "You'd forget your head if it was(wasn't) screwed on"

No, if my head was screwed on it would be quite secure in its current position.

I'm trying to "un Cockney" her on a daily basis but it's a slow process 😃

In Enola Gay's Britain people who say or write "should/could/would of" instead of "should/could/would have" will be the second group to be up against the wall after people who dawdle at cashpoints.

People who say 'pre-Madonna' will be buried up to their necks in boiling slurry, standing on the shoulders of those who say 'mute point'.

Can I add people who fill up at petrol stations, then spend 10 minutes shopping before paying, then return to their car, reapply their make-up and reply to three text messages before setting off ... all while people are waiting behind them ! :x

Like me, I fear that you may just have to accept that this is your lot 🙂

Whilst we're still vaguely in the London area it doesn't seem quite correct that I'm trying to filter out her heritage, or accept that it's me who should change 🤔, but that doesn't stop me from trying.

She's well aware of the healing properties of steak pudding, chips, and gravy though so it seems that the battle is partly won 🙂

I'm doing ok. Been retired a month now and it's requiring a little mental adjustment but I'm getting there.

Hope you're all doing ok too
