Half Man Half Biscuit - All I Want For Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit. No mention of Christmas in it which elevates it further.
Re: Christmas best songs?
Was just about to post that.

It’s cliched to be cynical at ChristmasClaretinJapan wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 7:07 amHalf Man Half Biscuit - All I Want For Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit. No mention of Christmas in it which elevates it further.

Still love Fairytale of New York. Haven’t liked much the Killers have done since the first album but their Christmas song Christmas in LA is great.

They certainly don’t make Xmas songs like they used to do that’s for sure .
Elton John’s -Step into Xmas quite an underrated tune.

Love spaceman. But the good thing is it doesn’t have to be Christmas, it works at any time.Jambounchained wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 9:39 amA Spaceman Came Travelling - Chris de Burgh

Re: Christmas best songs?
I have to come down on the side of Greg Lake really. Loved his voice anyway but the lyrics to that song are really very cynical.
Hallelujah, Noel, be it heaven or hell,
The Christmas you get you deserve.
Pure magic.

'Do you hear what I hear' by Jonny Mathis, just because it's on Gremlins and is burned into my mind ever since. That or Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses.

Not the "best" but a favourite. For the sheer fun of it, this has always brought a smile to my face. Saw Slade perform it live at a wild Christmas gig in Staffordshire in 1977, good times. "Merry Christmas Everybody"

Re: Christmas best songs?
Some great ones already mentioned.
In Dolce Jubilo by Mike Oldfield is one that hasn't yet been.
edit- By which I mean his version. Obviously he didn't write the tune.

Last Christmas another good one.
Re: Christmas best songs?
First time I’ve really listened to the Gregg Lake lyrics and it is a pretty awesome song. Nothing like all the times it has played in the background at Xmas and I never really listened to the lyrics. I didn’t get it.
Re: Christmas best songs?
The Sinead O’Connor one is beautiful too.
Re: Christmas best songs?
I watched the Wham! Last Christmas special the other night where all the original cast from the video reunited. 40 years ago this year.
Wham gave all the royalties to Band Aid .

I Believe in Father Christmas is hard to beat.
I saw Greg Lake perform it as featured vocalist with Ian Anderson and his Band in Salisbury Cathedral in Dec 2011. He sang it beautifully, and the setting made it even more impressive.
On a rather more anarchic level, I’ve always enjoyed There Ain’t No Sanity Clause, by the Damned.
