Re: Barry Kirkby PSA testing info
As many of you may know, I discovered my prostate cancer following a PSA kit from Barry's organisation. Since then, I have had treatment and, to date, it has been successful.
I am eternally grateful to Barry and his crew.
Obviously, a PSA blood test isn't conclusive, but it is a good indication.
As beddie says, GET IT DONE!

Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
I've corrected the thread title - I know Barry well and I know he's not good with names, but he does usually manage to get his own correct.
As said above, get it done.

Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
I had a PSA test done at such an event around 10 years ago and my brother followed a couple of years later when he was 50. Cancer was diagnosed for him immediately whilst for me it was monitored until July this year when treatment became necessary. Thankfully surgery was possible for both of us and we are cancer free. Goodness knows how many Burnley/ Lancashire men have been similarly helped by these events. As per previous posts please if you are over 50 book and pay for the test (nominal fee) as it’s doubtful a GP will agree to one without significant reason.
Barry Kilby. A great man. Thank you.

Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
When I see Barry he always challenges me on my PSA reading. I've been to the docs this morning for them to take my bloods for my diabetes and asked them to do a PSA at the same time.
But if you are undecided, please get booked in to Barry's testing day. I have three friends who are with us now because they went and I learned recently that Dobbo went too and found he needed treatment.

Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
When or when is our Barry getting a decent gong for his Charity work which I guess must have saved the lives of a fair number of middle aged and older men

And thankfully all was fine. But please go and get a test if you’ve reached 50 plus.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2024 2:33 pmWhen I see Barry he always challenges me on my PSA reading. Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
I got a text today from my Doctor saying my annual PSA test is due in March and I’ll get an actual date later this month. I had a Prostate operation in March last year so I’d urge you all to make an appointment at the Barry Kilby testing day or contact your Doctor for one.

Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
I'm off to the docs on Thursday after passing blood last week.
More than likely a UTI and was put on antibiotics which are now finished.
Original signs cleared up now but system needs to clear before going any further
with checks.

Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
I booked mine yesterday. When entering my details, the date of birth box showed a current monthly Callander. I couldn’t just type in my DOB. I’d to tap it back 935 times to get the correct dates.
Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
I booked mine, last night - thanks for the reminder on this thread.
I actually ordered the home test kit last year, but failed to extract enough blood with the fingerprick.

If you tap on the year on the calendar shown,it will show a drop down of the years. Wind back to your year of birth then select month and date.

Thanks Claretlad12, I will hopefully remember that, for the next time, I apply for the test.

Thanks for the reminder on the thread
Just booked now for a test after struggling to get one through my GP as I’m under 50 despite being advised to get one done after both my Dad and Uncle’s were diagnosed with it during the past year.
Thankfully after treatment all are doing well and now clear

Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
Chris Hoy's diagnosis underlines the importance of young -middle aged men checking up every so often through programmes like Barry's PSA testing.
I'd been having occasional PSA tests for some time, due to my age, some symptoms and my dad having had prostate cancer too. In 2024 my PSA level was regarded as "borderline", but because of those other factors I requested a fuller examination and the GP agreed, luckily, as I was found to have fairly early stage prostate cancer. It doesn't require treatment at this stage, it's under what's known as "active surveillance".
The surveillance programme involves regular PSA tests and an annual MRI scan to see what changes have occurred in the tumour(s). In November the MRI showed changes that needed further investigation through a biopsy, which, although uncomfortable, is absolutely essential. It turned out that the changes were due to chronic inflammation and not an alarming growth in the tumours.
I've found the charity "Prostate UK" nurses to be very helpful, especially with answering questions that there might not be time for, or which don't spring to mind, during a GP appointment. Their number is 0800 07483831.

Thanks for the candid share, Sarum. I imagine many of us are in "snipers' alley" as far as these things are concerned. The more people share the uncomfortable truth, the more people will, hopefully, be triggered into taking early diagnostic action and avoiding much more significant later problems.

Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
If anyone has a routine appointment with their GP which perhaps involves a standard blood test such as full blood Counts, you can always ask for the PSA test to be added to the list as well.
Re: Barry Kilby PSA testing info
PSA check is obviously very important and don’t forget the more general NHS health check for those over 40 (see link)

I’m a little behind the curve again, but the website states 40 places available but it won’t let me book as it says the event is fully subscribed!
