Sir Gareth Southgate
Surprised this hasn't been posted already. Southgate is set to be knighted in the New Years honours list.
Deserved?
He has achieved more than any England since Ramsey, but ultimately won nothing.

Should be no knighthoods for simply doing a very lucrative job

Never say being a yes man gets you nothing.
Re: Sir Gareth Southgate
Should it not be for the likes of Kevin Sinfield, who has done so much for the MND Charity, rather than these " Celebrity Underachievers " ?

He did get the England team into a swimming pool to ride around on inflatable rainbow haired unicorns though.

Hope so.
Re: Sir Gareth Southgate
If people in football who get paid a fortune for playing the game or managing the game get knighthoods in front of the likes of Barry Kilby, who has saved a club built a business and employed football fans but more importantly has formed a charity that has saved numerous men's lives then the people who recommend these "celebs"and the people who dab the sword are worthy of nothing but contempt.

A joke, as the majority of these knighthoods are.

Re: Sir Gareth Southgate
Let’s consider his “achievements “ and what he has won to deserve the honour
Nothing
It’s embarrassing he has been knighted

He might be at ManU next season.
Re: Sir Gareth Southgate
100% deserved. He’s done a lot more for the game than just being England manager. Done a lot for youth development.

Re: Sir Gareth Southgate
Deplorable? I usually save that description for people who mug pensioners, drug dealers or such like. What has DB and his wife done to warrant such a despicable tag as that? Please elaborate as much as possible so I can make a judgement as whether to put them in the same category as “deplorable” people.Vincent'sCap wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 6:40 pmHis horrible Wife would be more unbearable than she is now if she had the Lady tag they are deplorable people.

And still no Sir James for services to cricket
But there was one for Mr Cook for scoring runs

Re: Sir Gareth Southgate
A guy in his late sixties sorted out my car this time last week,he's been in the industry since he was 16, had his own business for years, told me he has nurses ,doctors and care workers who rely on him when I asked was he closing for Christmas so they have his personal mobile. To me he is more worthy than the list of celebs and politicians who've just been told they are to be knighted.

Alan Hansen has also received an MBE for services to football and broadcasting. I don't think he's served either for the last ten years, so has he just been honoured as a reaction to being ill this year?

Re: Sir Gareth Southgate
Southgate absolutely not, ultimately achieved nothing tangible as a very highly paid football manager.
Beckham if any footballer deserves one it's him, silverware and beyond that his charitable work.
Jimmy Anderson absolutely for his longevity at the top level and his continual wicket taking. To be a high performer in fast bowler takes some physical dedication.
Above all of them and no disrespect to Jimmy and as mentioned Barry Kilby ( who definitely deserves one). Kevin Sinfield deserves it more than anyone. Absolute selfless inspiration of a man. There is no reason for him not to already have one. Sod these half arse protocol excuses.

It's time to ditch these gongs - they are too divisive. Also, ditch the unelected House of Lords at the same time.

Re: Sir Gareth Southgate
Quite incredible how Sadiq Khan is receiving one. London has gone backwards under his divisive and obnoxious ‘leadership’.
At least with Southgate it’s rewarding clear progress.
