Victoria Ground, Stoke City - Old Ground Remembered (VIII)
We play Stoke City tomorrow, so why not have the Victoria Ground as the next in the series?
Two Clarets shown below in the pics: Kevin ‘Rooster’ Russell and Peter Swan (Port Vale) jumping for a ball against the prolific, Mark Stein.
I don’t have that many memories, although I do recall Mark Monington going in goal with Burnley leading (Adrian Randall) against the 1992/93 Champions on their day of celebration (Rooster, then of Stoke, had kicked Beresford in the eye and the keeper was unable to continue). He made several good saves but eventually conceded but Burnley secured a great draw.
Any anecdotes to recall or matches there that stick in your memory?
John

A ground I'll always miss.
Saw my first ever Clarets game on The Victoria.
Don't remember too much about the game itself, but still remember the noise! I'd never heard so much.
Then the smells. Carbolic soap and beery- tobacco air.

Might have been a bit rough, but still better than the out of town monstrosity they moved to.

I remember it for the game where Mark Monington ended up in goal after Beresford had his looks temporarily spoiled by a certain Kevin "Rooster" Russell.
From memory, Monno made a couple of decent saves too!
I miss those days where outfield players were forced to go in goal!

Monno was outstanding in goal

I remember the game for Mono saving the day, for us.
I recall another match where Andy Payton scored. I think we won? (Maybe draw but we always win in my head)

Looks like big Peter Swan in the photo with Mark Stein.
Edit……should have read original post.

Only went once, got beat 0-2 December 1994.
David Eyres got sent off for a professional foul & they scored the resulting penalty.
94/95 was a poor season ending in relegation but surprisingly this was our first defeat in ten matches.

Wasn't the most welcoming of grounds for away fans!

One of the great ugly grounds of English football. Stoke were doing well in the 1970s until the wind took the roof off the Butler Street Stand and they had to sell some of their best players to pay for the repairs.

Saw my first Clarets match there. Nov 2nd 1963. 4-4 draw with Harris scoring two late goals. Went there many times over the years and recall Brian O'Neil scoring from at least 30yds against the legendary Gordon Banks. I've since been to the Bet365 but when it was the Britannia Stadium and I was lucky enough to be invited into the Britannia Box on the halfway line

I was at the 1-1 in ‘93 when they won the league. Easy get away post game.

I also remember the 1-1 in 93.
At half time I accidentally knocked someone's pie, resting on a barrier, onto the floor. I was pretty young and worried about getting a rollocking so swiftly moved away before the bloke realised. If you're on here, sorry about that

Always interesting after the game at The Vic.
Almost like it was deliberately set up for the fans to clash.

Re: Victoria Ground, Stoke City - Old Ground Remembered (VIII)
The old cinder car park was a mare trying to get away from the away end. I remember home fans getting in with us on the terrace, kicking off in lumps, I was nearly stabbed with an afro comb, picked it up and handed it to a police officer who nearly arrested me until he got the fact I was handing it in!!!!!! My Dad would have gone off big time at me if I'd ever been in bother so avoided it like the plague.
Re: Victoria Ground, Stoke City - Old Ground Remembered (VIII)
I can remember going into the Boothen End before the game with a small group of Burnley fans,we didn't last long but gave them a fright. 🫣

My favourite league ground of all, counting york street as a non-league ground.
It had a homely feel to it, which the new one has none of.
If I could wish two grounds back into existence, it would be this, and York street.

I’m sure I’d have loved it.
