Jay Rod Today

Post by welsbyswife » Sat Jan 11, 2025 11:25 pm

Not sure if this has been said elsewhere but I thought it deserved a thread. It was a pleasure to watch Jay play alongside the 2 young lads in a deeper role today. He played well himself until he was tired in the 2nd half but you could see him talking to them constantly and helping them through the game. Very astute move from Parker to play him there. I bet he hasn't enjoyed a game of football as much in a long time. Lovely to see and one of the benefits of the cup.

Good thread and I'm glad someone else saw what I saw. I thought he was excellent and showed real ability in that role as well as leadership. Made me wonder how deep he could eventually go, could he sit in front of the back 4?

Still a classy footballer just hasn't got the legs for a lone role up front anymore.

Has he ever really been a lone striker anyway. I think we need to consider him as a midfielder more than a striker these days. He basically played Brownhills role today.

He may well have nurtured the two young lads but his general play was not good enough
I lost count of the number of simple passes that went astray
He certainly did not boss the midfield

His passing was well below his own standard, we were talking about it at HT.

Regardless of his ability to get up and down the pitch, his passing really needs to be better.

Wasn't his job to boss the midfield so you're showing a lack of understanding right from the off. And yes, some passes went astray but that's not uncommon when trying to play forwards. He wasn't in the Cullen role making tidy passes and keeping possession. Maybe try to watch games in a positive light instead of being overly critical and looking for fault. You might enjoy it.

The two lads in midfield by the way were excellent
But to say jay was excellent, classy and should be considered more of a midfielder now and even in the brownhill role

Come on if he wasn’t “one of our own” he wouldn’t be getting this said about him
He s been a great player for us but did you really watch the game yesterday

The point of the thread wasn't about Jay's performance it was about the pleasure of watching an old pro play alongside the 2 young lads and guide them through the game. The fact that you can't see that and felt the need to come on and have a pop at him tells me all I need to know about your outlook.

I have to agree with you-because more was expected yesterday in midfield from him, it was the clearest game for me that his legs have definitely finally gone to be effective in a top Championship side. One example down infront of us when a nice weighted pass to the byline for him had him scampering to get his foot through it, and the cross went behind the goal. A younger forward would have made the time to better control and direct the cross Again Barnesy was motivating and encouraging the younger one but this morning I am try to remember one thing he did .This is not a criticism by the way, but a realisation. When Fleming came on to partner Foster we were a totally different attacking force

Well regardless of how he played can we all agree on one thing, that he looked like he enjoyed playing with the young lads and that they will have benefitted from his experience. Actually that's two things!

I'm not suggesting he could play a regular role in midfield in the Championship. It's too dynamic and clearly his legs aren't what they were. I thought he did well yesterday even though he looked shattered 2nd half. But that's all just opinions.

This.

If I didn’t see Jay on the pitch for league games for more than five minutes a game I’d be absolutely fine with that. And there’s no way he should be offered a contract for next year.

He will played well and worked really hard, especially in the first half. He naturally tired later on.

Playings with a high technical level often can make that change as they lose their physicality. Rooney was one of them, with legs around him I'd be interested to see how he'd do in a sitting role.

We are unlikely to get the chance to see it but it'd be an interesting experiment.

A big 120 mins for Jay yesterday. As long as he doesn't get an adverse reaction over the next 2-3 weeks leading to time on the sidelines, yesterday will have done him the power of good. Definitely has something to offer in the challenging run in to the end of the season.

Sorry to slightly disagree but in the 2nd half and extra time he either gave away or lost the ball on numerous ccasions.

I've got to be honest. I didn't think it was a particularly great showing from him or Barnes.
He worked hard but his overall quality was poor at times. It's not to knock him I like Jay but times time. Let's remember that was also league one reading. Had jay bossed the game as some suggested I might think there was something left in the tank. But the reality is he was average at best against a side a lot poorer than the standard we play against week in week out.
Credit to him for nurturing the two lads through the game but I'm not buying he had a good game last night never mind bossed it. I think he would expect better from himself and if it's got to the stage where if he or we feel that was a good performance than maybe that says the level he's now at.

Make sure you keep Jay's agent out of the building, as he has to be the best around at extending contracts. If I was an ageing footballer wanting a new contract I would be all over Jay for his agents card

I thought Jay was dreadful , sluggish , poor passing and completely past it .I’ve loved him as a player and even last season he was still useful , but looks gone now . Though well done to the 2 u21’s a really solid show from the pair .

As good as Jay and Barnes might have been for the young lads, they were both ineffective themselves yesterday.

Jay in particular seemed slow, laboured and indecisive which led to numerous moves breaking down. He also showed a lack of composure at times dropping deep which I was not expecting from him.

I scored both Jay and Barnes a ‘5’ on the player ratings which I think was warranted based on their performance yesterday.

Give the guy a break. He was shunted into an unfamiliar centre midfield role against two young rookies. His experience would have helped them immensely. We know he’s not the future, but credit where it’s due for doing a job for the team.

Not sure what game people were watching but I don't know why I'm surprised that people are just throwing around insulting disrespectful comments about our only home grown player in the last 20 years. He's done a lot more and shown a hell of a lot more loyalty to the club than most on here.

Jay was good yesterday - he got through a lot of work and nicely linked midfield to attack (especially in the first half) and really helped out the two young lads... On another day, he buries his chance, and we're all happy for a vintage performance from JayRod.

It's pretty sad to see the crap that gets posted about him at times.

Posters on here or either ‘Jay is brilliant’ or ‘Jay is totally past it’ every time he plays. The truth is he’s usually somewhere in the middle.

Yesterday he did ok but the overreaction on here is so predictable.

No Agenda, he isn’t up to it anymore unfortunately. He has the ability but fitness not there and speed is non existent. So many games when he is playing as a number 9 he just isn’t quick enough or fit enough to keep up with the attacking play. This hinders both through balls or crosses as he’s never there. Real shame but he’s had his day.

Thought he was less than average today, Barnes showed why he was off loaded to Norwich. As for signing shelvey, what direction is the board taking, gotta to be better players available, or is the AI programme that recommends players broken?

Shelvey is in the same place as McBurnie for me -

Nowhere near us.
