Cheap Rail Fares

Post by Colburn_Claret » Wed Feb 21, 2024 11:02 am

Hi all
There have been a couple of threads on cheap rail tickets, that are just dropped on sale, once they've gone, they've gone.
I wonder if anyone who posted could tell me where you find these offers, and when/how you know the offers are up for sale.

You normally get an email a few days before the sale goes live.

The latest one was on Northern rail and was for tickets up to the end of March, so possibly another with them next month.

The days of cheap tickets on the west coast line have pretty much ended with the joke of a company now holding the contract.

Who do you subscribe to in order to receive the email though.
I obviously don't get one but would like to.
Northern Rail suits me, I'm equidistant to Darlington and Northallerton, so loads of possible destinations on East Coast line, and Transpennine.

Subscribe to notifications for the Trainline.com or the rail company you’re travelling with if you know. Or both! I went to London last week from Manchester for less than £15 by doing this. I think it’s cheaper if you actually buy from the company ie Avanti as Trainline add a booking fee

We’ve used the offers from Tod to Manchester Airport and if you split the journey up into 2 separate ticket it’s even cheaper ,I think it cost around £8 for the 2 of us.

Cheap rail fares? On my way to Madrid from Malaga, bullet train, first class return €70, my wife was in the UK last Monday for work commitments & had to get the train from Macclesfield to Birmingham which was £211. ☹️

Leeds fans are rightly kicking off on the prices for the prices returning my from their cup game next at Chelsea next week

10pm train which would be impressed for them to get at £47

The next train at 11:33pm £218

With the potential for extra time and penalties they can't really book the 10pm train anyway. Would be cheaper to stay over and go back next morning.

They know they won’t make the 10pm train and I know it’s supply/demand but a a 360% increase is ridiculous

A contradiction in terms since privatisation and price hikes to maximise shareholders profits fare have become far too costly for anyone to afford
I priced a trip up to the Turf via Reading to Piccadilly and Witchbus(free to us old folk) and still came over £120.I have a rail card but still cheaper to drive
Last season we were quoted over £90 each to go Reading to Bristol. £40,in the car free street parking.

If ticket prices were affordable trains would be even more overcrowded. When they decimated the railways to it’s current skeleton network it limited growth. One reason why train fares are high is to suppress demand so they don’t have to buy bigger trains and build new railways.

Words fail me where as other countries in the EU have dropped there prices to get more people travelling on trains , the best deal is the Germans as €29 for the month on anything but the high speed trains .

Outstanding value from them .

Just a heads up that there's a sale started with National Rail today. Might be handy for some of our upcoming away games.

You can also book via Uber and get 10% credit back to use on taxis/ uber eats, and no booking fees. Not sure how they make money on this, and got 20% back on a flight before, but adds up and has its uses.

I've used that same bullet train. Fantastic.
They display the speed in each carriage and I have photo of it doing 307 kph = 190 mph.
Wonderful (and cheap by uk standards.)

We use Trainpal and with our railcards it cost us total £52 travelling 8 30 from Poulton via Preston to Reading and returning Sunday 1115 from Reading. However checking out fares to Southampton it was over £240. The fare structure is totally bonkers

Try splitting tickets and price it Poulton to Manchester and Manchester to Southampton

We have got it for around £60 each return doing so
