3 penalties taken in a game at the Turf and still ended 0-0

Post by beeholeclaret » Sat Jan 18, 2025 1:26 am

After last night’s double penalty award to Sunderland and both kicks missed it prompted discussion and memories of Burnley v Man City in the 1975-76 season.

Referee Tom Reynolds was on a one man mission to ensure Burnley had a pointless afternoon.

In a feisty match he awarded a penalty to City before half time as Denis Tueart launched himself horizontally as keeper Gerry Peyton slid out to challenge. Jim Thomson was so incensed he had a face to face with Tueart who feigned a head butt and referee Reynolds sent off the Burnley defender.

Tueart stepped up and justice was done as Peyton hurled himself to his right to parry the ball away (not unlike JT last night).

In the second half Tueart again was judged to be tripped in the area and Reynolds awarded another penalty. Tueart stepped up again and netted his penalty kick but this was disallowed due to encroachment.

Tueart was then required to take his 3rd penalty kick of the afternoon and promptly hit the post with his effort! The game finished goalless and last night’s Sunderland game drew parallels with that game from almost 50 years ago.

In the furore that followed the first penalty incident Reynolds required an escort as he left field at half time. So flustered was he that he missed the fact that Burnley kicked off the second half having also taken the first kick off at beginning of the afternoon’s play. I noticed these things back in the day. 😂

That’s some recall of the incidents. Although I was on, I cannot remember any of it.

I was only a kid back then and devoted to all things Claret & Blue. I still have my scrapbooks and autographs and all sorts of crap stashed away in the loft. I remember my mum coming home from a high school parents evening in tears having been told of my inadequacies on the academic front. Evidently my form teacher had said “if Beeholeclaret had as much knowledge of his physics and geography etc as he has with football and cricket he would be heading for Oxford or Cambridge! 😂

I remember Jensen saving two against Wolves in the league cup but more goals were score in the game. Similarly, in think Danny Coyne may have saved two.

And what a strange coincidence that Tueart also happened to be a former Sunderland player. Must be something about the Turf that they find intimidating

Thomson was sent off for 'kicking an opponent' with Reynolds ruling he had kneed Tueart in the back of the leg despite the City man saying after the game he hadn't felt any sort of blow.

City's 2nd penalty wasn't given for a trip on Tueart but when Keith Newton fisted a Joe Royle effort over the bar. Incidentally 10 man Burnley were denied a clear spot kick in the last minute when Tony Morley was brought down whilst through on goal.

Thanks for correcting on the above points. my memories of 50 years ago must be getting blurred! ;)

Like someone else said somewhere, I was probably there but don't remember any of it.

Of course Tueart later played for Burnley under a certain Mr Bond.

I seem to remember that Stuart Hall on commentary for BBC radio had used the phrase "Denis Tueart's headlong tilt towards the Burnley goal was niftily halted by Newton's shin". Maybe it was another incident / different game? Controversial game all the same.
