The 0-0 against Luton in the Cotterill season was worse.
Tonight was poor though, admittedly. To not lay a glove on them all game was disappointing.

Parker has to come under some criticism for not going for the win, especially at home, Foster should of been whipped off after 20 mins, game was crying out for Hannibal to come on earlier and smash someone, can’t remember one crunching tackle to get the fans going.

To be fair if we had gone behind we would have flicked a switch and gone for it.
It just hasn’t happened very often. Our two defeats have been weird circumstances, one days after all our best players said they are leaving and the other where both main strikers were unavailable.
So we are a victim of our defensive brilliance. Parker simply chooses to lean on it, and I sense it becomes subconscious in the players.

I'm sure pretty sure it wasn't the worst game of footy you've ever watched. Two evenly matched teams at the top of the table not wanting to give anything away - that was pretty much predictable prior so not sure what the OP expected.

On reflection, after an unmentionable number of decades supporting Burnley, what is it that makes it worthwhile ?
For me it's the magic moments .... Billy Ingham flicking it over his and volleying into the back of the net; Steve the Tank Kindon on a one route charge for goal; Paul Fletcher overhead kick at Leeds; Scott Twine sublime free kick in the dying minutes of a game; Tony Morley picking the ball up on the touchline in his own half and going on a mazy run all the way down the other end, etc, etc.
There just seems a lack of bold individualism these days. Fans sometimes seem more content on achieving a destiny of some sort...fewest goals ever conceded; a promotion to yet another hiding in the Premier league; a boring but successful result ground out. But nothing really in the long run that will imprint a lasting moment in your mind.

Been at least 5 worse games this season alone. This was just two good teams cancelling each other out, happens all the time.
What is odd though is that there seem to be plenty of people on here lauding Leeds like they’re the greatest team ever seen at this level, when they’re what, 3 points ahead of us? They’re really not that good. It’s a great result for them.

What we really didn’t do, was put Meslier under any pressure. Consodering some of his howlers this season, that was a bit disappointing. Even our solitary (I think) corner was one of the knock it back and try work an opening variety.

Genuinely, after a 15- or 25- pass move that doesn't even get out of our own half, do you stand and cheer in the same way as you would if we scored a goal? And do you get funny looks when you do?
I'm not saying there can't be great excitement in playing 3 home games this year and drawing them all 0-0. It's just that I can't see what the excitement is. We have Oxford next week - are you looking forward to another defensive masterclass and another 0-0 draw?
Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
That's the problem. Parker will not flick that switch. I can see the point against Leeds, where not losing is so vital that a sure draw is better than a 50-50 of winning, but why not flick the switch against Derby? Or Stoke? Or Oxford away? Or many of the NINE 0-0 draws, SIX of them at home, that we have sat through? I reckon that being desperate to hang on for a draw at home to the bottom teams is not the way to chase promotion.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2025 11:01 pmTo be fair if we had gone behind we would have flicked a switch and gone for it.

Egan-Riley said it on Sky after the match. All the players are responsible for defending, from the centre forward (or "number 10", perhaps) to the goalkeeper. I have heard no similar comment to claim that anyone is responsible for scoring goals. One of the Sky pundits said the same - when the opponents have the ball, everyone, including Foster, Antony, and Flemming, are back defending the penalty area. No-one is kept up from in hope of scoring a goal. Scoring goals is simply not a priority.
It is so boring.
Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
You're taking an overly simplistic view of football tactics. There are other options apart from "defend for your life" and "all out attack". Some teams, for example, play with 2 up front and still keep some semblance of defensive stability.Clive 1960 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 12:31 amParker isn't stupid if we go all out attack they would counter attack us with there pace and pick us off, good point in the end ..

it's a fine balancing act especially against teams like Leeds who have a lot of pace. Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
The thing is, NONE of this is lost on Parker, he acknowledges it. I don't think he has the players at the moment to be prolific. With the best will in the world Jay and Barnes aren't going to bag loads, Foster is only just coming back and the fact Parker is reluctant to stick him up top tells us he either thinks he isn't up to it or his wingers are even more of an issue. Big squad or not, there is a huge lack of quality and legs in certain positions - I do think he could be a little bit more gung ho in some games because the opposition have even less quality but he needs help from the board imho

It felt to me watching on tv that leeds were the most premier league type team we have played. They were quick and looking to slip the ball between our defenders.
Bogle was clearly MOM.
Yes the 0-0 are killing us but last night was a point gained, the others were points dropped.

I’m watching from afar this season. I’ve only been on one match(PNE at home) and that was enough.
There is nothing about Parker’s Football that would induce me to part with my cash again at home. Last night’s game had borefest written all over it to the point where I didn’t even go to the pub to watch it. Looks like a good decision from me.
Away from home is better and it does not surprise me that we are doing as well there.
I think we’ll still go up automatically but, compared to the last three times, it will be an utterly drab affair.

I was on holiday for the Cardiff game. I’ve not missed a home game since.
This means I’ve seen us score a whopping 10 goals in 13 home games (0.77 per game) and sat through six goalless draws.
I’ve also been to Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Hull, Blackburn & Leeds. We’ve scored 3 goals in those 5 games (0.6 per game).
I’ve seen a combined total of 13 goals in 18 games (0.72).
Thank god for the defence.

Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
Both teams were scared of getting caught too far up the pitch. We beat Leeds with a breakaway and they knew that if it happened again they would struggle to score. We knew that going attacking would play right into their hands. Both were happy for a point from the start.

I was 'in complete fear of the opposition too'.Goliath wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2025 10:02 pmParker was terrified to change things in case of a negative effect so left Foster on way too long. I'm sorry but that was a cowardly display, it's not often I've had to say that.
The team was set up in complete fear of the opposition and that had spread to the players as well. I'd love to see the stats on Humphreys passing. I don't even think he knew which was he was shooting with the amount of times he turns out and goes back to keeper/cb.
We need a left back, a creative central player, 1 or 2 wide men and a striker. It's not going to happen but they are all clear weaknesses in this team.
We have been bailed out all season by the centre backs being an absolute revelation and it's seriously papering over the cracks
I found it a nervous watch as Leeds threatened. As their manager said, he thought his own players were a bit nervous and shots a bit wilder then normal, and that's what I saw. They were the only likely winners. I was scared of a hammering. Once they score, if we open up, our defence may not have seemed so invincible which is of course because it's not our defence but our defending as a team that is the reason for our success. We are not an attacking team like Leeds.
Parker has put together a team with few outstanding players. Most of them are just above average Championship players. You could see for example Laurent's limitations last night. I like the player but his control and decision making was just not quick enough. Anthony, another player I like, made too many errors with the ball, as he does. Sarmiento's only real contribution after he came on was to give an inaccurate pass that set up a Leeds attack (not the first time he's done this). Foster's instructions must surely have been to deal with Bogle but in the first half he was way to loose with him. He did tighten up in the second half and that may be why Leeds had no second half chances until, near the end when Foster had gone.
Whilst Leeds also had their failings yesterday - some surprisingly poor passing for example - they looked ahead of us generally and in the way they mostly controlled the match. Their issue is putting the ball in the net after all their clever pacy play and a slightly weak defence - but clearly strong enough to deal with our 'forwards'.
I'm happy with 0-0 as in the great scheme of things we are in promising situation with the remaining fixtures. We've come through a tough series of matches and we have done pretty well out of them. It is also a considerable improvement on our backs to the wall performance at Elland Road (although ironically we created more and better opportunities in that game - maybe you are right!).

I thought I was going mad with everyone saying he set up correctly against that Leeds side. They are really average, absolutely nothing to be frightened of. We did the same against Sunderland and we have come out of both games with 1 point through sheer luck.
If that Leeds chance near the end goes either side of Trafford we lose 1 0 and it would have been absolutely deserved due to the way we set up.
Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
It was tense and edgy. The fans were spurring their team on. The ref was too strict, he should have let the game flow more. I enjoyed it as I'm in the CFS were there is atmosphere
Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
not even the worst game I've seen this month.
Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
Parker has developed his out of possession tactics since then. A common criticism in the past was his teams being too easy to counter against. I’m struggling to think of 1 goal conceded by counter attack this season? I’ve no idea how he’ll get on next time in the Prem, I mean all odds are firmly stacked against any newly promoted club, but having a really well organised defence probably gives us a slightly better chance from the outset, than going all out attack with floaty wingers, a floaty small 10 as a centre mid and 20-21 year old keeper and defenders.

Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
I’ve tried to be objective about Parker all season. I don’t agree that we set up defensively. I think Parker is about total control, which at this level we’re not a long way off. It’s like the game plan is to suffocate the opposition and starve them of the ball. It starts by drawing them onto us with a strong faith that we can keep the ball even under the most aggressive press. Against a lower block that doesn’t press its patient build up into the opposition’s half looking for opportunities to break them down.
I think there’s two problems with this approach and the current squad. The players don’t seem good enough. There’s always a poor pass or a bad touch. Even if we keep the ball, the patient controlling aspect of us is to start again, and that literally means many times going all the way back to Trafford and start again. But I don’t think the solution is better players. I think it just asks too much of players at this level, even at the very top.
The other approach is how dogmatic Parker is. I get that coaches want to focus on Plan A, but would it be too much to also allow them to make decisions on whether on this occasion they don’t need to draw the press to its nth degree? There are times in a game where the opposition isn’t set and a couple of quick passes through the lines can see you on the edge of the other teams box. I think this has been the key difference in recent games with decent opposition. Sunderland and Leeds both had midfielders who were taking the ball on the half turn in a yard of space and moving their team up the pitch more quickly than we do. They didn’t always wait to draw our press, which would likely have seen players like Bellingham and Tanaka have less space and their options disappear. I do think it’s a subtle difference in approach and why they appeared to be teams more on the front foot. We’re quite happy to give the ball to players like Cullen with nowhere to turn. We just hope to draw the team out and ping a long ball to a winger/full back free out wide.
I don’t think there was much between the teams last night. They’re the best team we’ve faced, and with better defenders than most championship side they were able to completely nullify any attacking threat based on our weaknesses. But they also didn’t have enough to create anything of note with our outstanding defence led by Esteve who is a game changer at this level. Both teams wanted to play from the back, and pass the opposition to death, the only difference was they try and do it at a slightly higher tempo.
Re: The worst game of football I have ever watched
It didn't though, using what ifs to make a point doesn't work.Goliath wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 9:56 amI thought I was going mad with everyone saying he set up correctly against that Leeds side. They are really average, absolutely nothing to be frightened of. We did the same against Sunderland and we have come out of both games with 1 point through sheer luck.
If that Leeds chance near the end goes either side of Trafford we lose 1 0 and it would have been absolutely deserved due to the way we set up.
