just chatter amongst pals. Not sure where it has come from. As I said, sounds unlikely.
(Just a rumour, obvs).
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Considering they are playing tomorrow night I'd find it unlikely he was in Burnley
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Not convinced we'll sign any more this window. Think we'll go with what we have and wait for a couple to come back from injuries.

It’s been the same all window, people saying they have seen him at gawthorpe.
Some geezer will of been walking his dog, took a Quick Look at enock ageyi and go that’s tella and before you know it, the rumour is doing the rounds in padiham that tella is back and then it ends up on here

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Whether or not it's true, a player in the Tella mould makes absolute sense. Our shape is still very similar to what Kompany played 2 years ago. Tella played two roles in that season. In both roles we had Barnes (after Jay got injured) playing in a false 9 type role. Against lesser opposition we played more of a 4-4-2 with Tella replacing one of the #8's. In many games though he played from a wide position, but not as an orthodox winger. He was great at making runs from that position in behind defences. Anthony sometimes tries that, but isn't great at it. I think that's part of the idea with Foster playing left, but he needs to learn that role and isn't a natural. That shape that Tella flourished in is exactly what we're playing now. Cullen sat deep with Anthony and Brownhill in advance either side of him. With 3 central midfielders, one can cover the flank whilst a Tella type player drifts in field. We've seen similar this season with Sarmiento, though he tends to come into more of an attacking midfielder space when he comes inside. But we lack someone who can come inside and stretch the other team doing so.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Tella really hit his straps playing from the right side in a loose formation which had a left footed playmaker comfortable drifting wide to the right (JBG) playing in the 10 role. It meant that at times we ended up in a 442 formation, particularly out of possession, with Tella central, and it also meant we had a player in Tella who was very much a finisher of moves, and a player in JBG who has a starter of moves and creator of chances.ChorltonCharlie wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 12:06 pmWhether or not it's true, a player in the Tella mould makes absolute sense. Tella would certainly solve one problem because he'd inject genuine pace and finishing ability and it's easy to imagine how he'd dovetail with Flemming, but without the JBG equivalent I'm still not sure we'd be the finished article. We had noone in our midfield last night who offered that sort of quality and whilst there are three in the squad who on paper have that ability, they've played 40 minutes at a cup tie at Reading between them this season. Sarmiento hasn't really hit his straps yet as a creator of chances, and so we've been heavily reliant on Anthony for that skill set.

Good point on JBG. He was always an intelligent footballer, whether playing out wide or more central. His quality on the ball has not been replaced. The one I think could replace him is Aaron Ramsey. The problem will be getting him up to fitness.claretspice wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 12:31 pmTella really hit his straps playing from the right side in a loose formation which had a left footed playmaker comfortable drifting wide to the right (JBG) playing in the 10 role. We're not a million miles away. The issues haven't really changed all season. We need a proper no.9 and a decent left winger. With these in place I suspect we'd see a very different team, especially at home. Two years ago we had a number of players who could make something happen - Tella, Benson, Zaroury, JBG, even the full backs in Maatsen and Vitinho had ability in the final third. We're severely depleted in these areas this season.

Good points Spice - we also don't have an Ian Maatsen who used to dice teams open from left back/defensive midfield (when he inverted).claretspice wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 12:31 pmTella really hit his straps playing from the right side in a loose formation which had a left footed playmaker comfortable drifting wide to the right (JBG) playing in the 10 role. If Shelvey is anywhere near the player he was 2/3 years ago he has to come in for Laurent.

While not wishing to add to the Tella speculation (I know nothing)…
Karen Faz of BBC Sport is from a family of Claret fanatics, her father John certainly used to have connections in the old setup and the fact she is speculating on Tella raises my interest. For me he is also exactly who I think we should be moving heaven and earth to bring back; it would be an Ian Wright like boost for the fans and a player who could slot straight in.
The signing of Shelvey offers the type of midfielder that could pick out the space, we already have CG who can put the ball where he wants… Tella has the know how and space to maximise the impact of their ability. For me it would add a whole new threat to us going forward.
While I dismissed the original rumours, as I’ve previously posted Ash Barnes return immediately made me reconsider; and the rumour continues to reappear.

Very much agree.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 10:06 amI think a lot of it comes down to Tella, he’s played very very little this season.
If transfermarkt is right, he’s played just over 600 minutes and we are nearly into February. With Buendia signing for them I think it’s even more likely that his already limited game time will effectively become nothing.
He’s nearly in the peak years of his career and he still hasn’t even played 100 professional games.
It’s a bit of a make or break time for him. He either makes the jump to a club where he regularly plays or it’s likely that he will have wasted his best years on the bench.
I think there’s a decent bit of logic that we could make this deal happen
Tella has only really played games for us professionally. Unless he wants to waste
Then you have to look at the fee Leverkusen paid. £20m for a player that has played 600 minutes is a lot. Consider we sold Cornet with 9 premier league goals for £17.5m and Dwight with 3 seasons at that level for a similar amount.
Tella must be wanting games now and only premier league clubs or the top teams in other leagues pay £20m for players, and to be honest since he’s not been playing I can’t see a huge queue of them.
If they hold on to him (and not play him) he’s only going to become more unhappy and his value drop further.
Not convinced we’ll get it done at all but I could see a deal where we take him on loan with an option to buy if promoted that recovers their outlay on a performance basis being workable and something that would offer a solution to all parties.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Agree about the skillset of JBG, though he definitely played more alongside Brownhill rather than in front of him. Different type of player, but effectively that's what Laurent is doing alongside Brownhill this season. We won't replicate what VK did that season, but my point was a wide forward rather than an out and out winger definitely gives us more options and is something we lack and Parker seems to want to find based on the evidence of trying Foster out wide.claretspice wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 12:31 pmTella really hit his straps playing from the right side in a loose formation which had a left footed playmaker comfortable drifting wide to the right (JBG) playing in the 10 role. He, Tresor and Ramsey all have the potential to add more creativity in that area of the pitch. The problem is they are the three I referred to who have played so little football. It's a huge gamble to rely on them to get sufficiently fit that they can fill that void between now and May. We've got 17 games left and neither Ramsey nor Redmond have featured in the 21s yet.

Your mention of it being a 'gamble' is an understatement. As you say two of them haven't had a runout anywhere, the other one remains a mystery, even an oddity in the history of our football club.claretspice wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 3:24 pmHe, Tresor and Ramsey all have the potential to add more creativity in that area of the pitch. I grant you that any addition to a team is ultimately a gamble but I still feel there are some young, hungry players with bigger clubs than us just itching to get some experience of first team football. I don't know the names as I'm not as 'savvy' as other posters but as a professional football club we must surely ve on this. Again, it's a gamble but sometime in these remaining games a gamble may have to be taken.

I joked to my son when Barnes returned, that JBG and Tella would be next. As long as VK stays away!
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Bayer Leverkusen are likely losing Victor Boniface to Al Nassr so I would expect Evan Ferguson is a direct replacement for him.
They usually use Tella out wide so I can't see the signing of an out and out striker impacting his playing time either way.

My only worry for Parker is that if we fail to bring in a forward who's pushing for a starting spot during this window, this will be on him.
The last window in August he was blameless as the chaos ensued around him. If we have a few more non scoring poor results over the next few weeks, some fans will inevitably start getting on his back, not just on a fans forum.
