Burnley Subbuteo Team

Post by JLR81 » Tue Feb 04, 2025 9:59 am

Just seen this on eBay if anyone's interested - ends on Saturday.

Don't worry, I'm not the seller.

Used to love Subbuteo back in the day.

Still have both my home and away Burnley team , got two pitches 5 sets of goals although the square post ones have seen a lot of humbrol glue on as well as good old sellotape. Ive a cardboard box with about 15 or 18 teams ,Back in the day once you had about 10 teams most could be international Like England /spurs
Germany/ Derby Liverpool /wales . First 2 teams were red shirts white shorts / and Everton blue shirts white shorts Have Brazil (one of the ones without a english team. A range of goal keepers some on a steal rod some on plastic (detachable either diving or catching keeper) and ones on plastic rod with spring at the end . Got kickers for goal kicks and corners. Dont even start on the different balls large brown one (orignal size) winter balls world cup and international ones as well as plain white, Score board practice net with yellow front with holes in Corner flags. I was a late starter as it was about 1967 when i got my first set (till have first pitch nit a bit tatty ), Would love to play again but not sure my knees would cope as the best place i found was on the floor. Although my dad did make me 2 table top ones Chip board base with surrounding 2 inch fence and carpet inside to put pitch on and a smaller one for 5 a side with actual old snooker table felt. dont have those any more as playing on the floor was always best for me, several of my friends had sets well so you could go from one house to another to play away games internationals etc when I got a tape recording machine if there were more than 2 of us to play then 2 played whilst 1/2 did the commentary, not sure we ever listened to them after as we were not that sad lol

I used to regularly play it against one of my best mates when it first came out. It was a really good game.

We were subbuteo buffs but to be fair 4-2-4 was a cleverly designed game also. After a few of the 4-2-4 players were accidentally snapped we removed all the players / figurines from the blocks and the game was unaffected.

Saturdays were great back in the day. Tiger and Scorcher was on the doormat when we got up. Lunchtime was Sam Leitch preview on BBC then down to Turf with our scrapbooks seeking autographs from home and visiting players. Similarly we collected more signatures after the match and then home for tea and a copy of the sports pink to see the other scores and news.

Saturday evening was subbuteo and a full programme of Division One games before departing to the chippy for 'fish and chips in a bag' and then home for Match of the Day.

Just to cheer up 'pureclaret' we did record the commentary on small cassette recorder and yes we did listen to the games afterwards!!

Happy days.

I was very keen on Subbuteo and, amongst many other teams, had Burnley (of course). I was allowed to keep my first wage as an apprentice in 1970 and I bought a Subbuteo football game. As a joke, somebody bought me a Subbuteo the Christmas before last.

this did cheer me up ''Just to cheer up 'pureclaret' we did record the commentary on small cassette recorder and yes we did listen to the games afterwards!! Mine was a small Phillips recorder used to record the top 20 on Sunday night before listening to radio Luxembourg and radio Caroline with a mike placed in front of a small radio life in the 60s early 70s was so easy and free , like playing wally on an avenue just round the corner where there were flag stones stood on end into the ground to hold a field about 8 inches higher one kick to hit the wall unless it had gone past number 6 then you got 2 kicks.
Perhaps we should ask if the football at the turf is not a exciting as we would like if they have a carpeted area like the board room where i could bring in my Subbuteo box I think one of the teams is Leeds so would be ok for Oxford away strip against the older Burnley strip if we played 40 mins each way at our full time we could go pitch side to tell the ref the result and stop the game

Yes at half time on the subbuteo rig up they could have a competition to flick the ball from the goal line to the centre circle to win a lucrative prize. Mr Shouty could then announce the bad news that the winner is only receiving a car keyring as opposed to a cash prize? 😉😉😂

Round where we lived as kids we had a Subbuteo league, playing home and away at each other’s houses. Tended to play on Sunday afternoons with whatever the Granada edited highlights show was called in the background. Remember particularly it was when Northampton had their one season in Division 1, 66 or 67

Same here. I remember one member getting banned for eggy farts. I had the Burnley V kit and the obligatory "World Cup Nets" in which the ball would nestle nicely as there was no bar for the ball to bounce back from. Happy days!

I'm sure we had a set with the gold 'V' on the front as well.

Aw I used to love Benn's toy shop when I was little. Genuinely felt like a magical place, wish I could go back.

And same, it's where I discovered my first Subbuteo set.

It was actually a replacement present for a cowboy shooting game that was faulty. I'd never heard of Subbuteo before randomly finding it on the shelf with my dad.

Good memories.

The team in the pictures is Subbuteo kit no. 7, which originally doubled up as Aston villa and West ham. The shirt later came out with the V on it. Can't remember the ref. number, but have both upstairs.

Some kits were a lot better than others. The 1979 West ham one was horrible, as was Watford, but my favourite was fc twente enschede, with the white stripes down one side.

I remember they all had numbers the first 'Burnley' team I got was 27(?) listed as something like Burnley. Hearts, Arbroath and Stenhousemuir

My favourite was the away kit from the mid-1970s - white shirts with claret and blue trim, claret shorts and claret and blue hooped socks - doubled up as Burnley and Northampton

From memory number 170 was a bespoke Burnley kit replicating the early 1970-75 era

My dad who was a gifted artist skillfully painted the blue V on them from 1976

Still Got this set and the V set + a dozen others paid for by slave labour - mowing grass, weeding, planting veg, pollishing shoes and boots etc.

Fave sets were usually regular fixtures - Brazil v Burnley, England v Peru etc Springy goalkeepers allowed as they wer pretty useless

That was Subbuteo at its absolute zenith

They released sets for all of the competing teams at Mexico 1970 numbered around the 150s-160s in their catalogue

The hand-painting was superb - Peru has always been a classic kit - I added Bulgaria to the collection too

Remember having the Zaire one as well, got it on sale along with Portsmouth (173).

Used to love the accessories as well, ball boys, photographers, police and ambulancemen, tv tower, fencing around the pitch including one piece showing the half time scores, referee and linesmen, corner kickers, throw-in figures, corner flags, dugout etc. By the time you'd set it all up, your tea was ready.

A friend of mine had pro-shot golf ..or Arnold Palmer’s pro-shot golf as I think was its full title . Brilliant for the long game across the living room carpet but chipping the ball onto that small foam rubber green was virtually impossible ! Getting out of the plastic bunkers wasn’t great either. Good times !!

Oh yeah! I had the pitch fencing, dugouts and TV gantry. And so many variants of the ball - the adidas Orange Tango was a fave. Never had the stands and the floodlights though. Some setups with crowds looked incredible.

Just checked the auction, ends tomorrow, its at £21 now
