How to Improve the Atmosphere!

Post by BigChaCha » Wed Feb 05, 2025 9:38 am

Any ideas apart from start playing aggressive attacking football?...

These are not necessarily my ideas, I am just throwing a few suggestions out there...

1: Sort out the middle section of the Bob Lord stand. It is often half-empty for most games and not very animated... They can barely be bothered to come back after half-time either, it takes them an age to get to their seats at the start of games and after half-time... If it is a poor first half, many don't seem to bother returning in the second half either... Fill it with real fans!...

2: Fill the empty corners with kids or university students with complimentary tickets...

3: Sell the away tickets in sections... They are spread out all over the place and rarely full the front seats... Same with the home support in the Cricket Stand...

4: Do we need an official drum or trumpet?... Maybe a designated squadron of fans encouraged to carry out choreographed chants and flag-waving... A fan leader section if you like

5: Lower alcohol prices or give special discounts... I am sorry to say but it makes a massive difference to the atmosphere... When I watch matches in mainland Europe, they seem to drink a lot more and the atmospheres are far better!...

The less than exciting football certainly hasn't helped.

But I think more than that is the fact that there's no real excitement in this promotion challenge, mainly because, even if it ends successfully (and I suspect by hook or by crook, it probably will) the Premier League isn't particularly something to look forward to anymore. Sure, we need the money we get from it, but another season of inevitable struggle doesn't get the pulses running.

Promotion to the Premier League is more of a financial necessity rather than a dream now, particularly as we have very recent memories of that dream turning into a nightmare.

The atmosphere is what it’s always been since we went all-seater and is the same as at 90pc of clubs. As has been said the atmosphere depends virtually entirely on what’s happening on the pitch.

Turn the Bob Lord into the family stand, move the 'singing section' section to the Jimmy Mac stand and split it between home and away fans

1. That’s the directors box and corporate seats, they don’t sing.
2. Giving away tickets is what Rovers do.
3. Away fans sit were they get a view and who wants to sit at pitch level behind the goals?
4. No we don’t, never!
5. The last thing we need is more drunk fans.

We had attacking football under Kompany and the atmosphere was poor then too.

Para 2. I can imagine there being plenty of disgruntled fans who have paid for tickets/season tickets, only for everyone else around them to be given free tickets every week. That’s going to have a negative effect on the atmosphere.

Sums it up pretty well. The prospect of getting walloped every week in the Prem doesn't exactly get the pulses racing.

I've said this on other threads but, it's an unfortunate truth that if you remove alcohol and groups of men who've consumed a lot of it, there'll be less noise. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but if you go to Europe where atmospheres are better, beer is a lot cheaper, more readily available, and you are able to drink it in the stands.

Secondly you have pricing. You are perhaps removing more passionate fans with ones who can simply afford it over time. Thirdly you have the nature of the game. Less physical - on the rare occurrence there's strong tackles going in, that gets the crowd up. Rarely happens. The game is a little more tactical and slow too.

So in short - less beer, more expensive ticket/less passionate supporters, less aspects of the game that get a crowd going. It's not suprising really.

Exactly this. We've had enough recent experience to know that generally the PL isn't "all that", but like every other club, we need the ridiculous money on offer and that's why I'll be celebrating (again) IF we get there.

Cardboard clappers - it worked for Leicester and gets fans used to actually making a noise - it’s quite cheap Alan

Use well known sing along anthems when the teams come out for both halves - at present any crowd noise or atmosphere is instantly killed by inane music.

Provide affordable food and drink so fans are happy. Stop selling it at 2.45 so fans are in place by kickoff

Dancing dogs at half time

Play exciting football

Football has tried to clean up it's image over the years and get rid of atmosphere creating young men by bans and pricing them out.
It has attracted huge amounts of families (which is good) but they are more likely to be buying hot dogs or taking young ones to toilets than singing.

The owners want just enough atmosphere to entertain their corporate guests.

Only fast attacking football will get a reaction from fans but that will fade away when it stops. It would need a massive overhaul of attracting young fans in groups to get atmosphere back, but that would mean lowering prices which will never happen.

Just listen to the crowd at Goodison for the long ball goal after a few seconds. Trafford would have held on to the ball for 10 seconds to let the opposition get set.

You complain about fans not returning to their seats fast enough but want to make alcohol cheaper and give them more incentive to be on the concourse.

Last night I found d my self thinking simular. Not just how to improve but why was it like it is.

My obs last night apart from the well documented boring style of play was that there is almost too much football now.
The stands were half empty all over last night. Alot of these are kids and can/will miss night games but there seam to be alot of night games now. Fridays/mondays/tuesday/Wednesdays . These are all available on the ss+. I can totally understand why it's half empty. Midweek when it's not a big game/opponent.

Also a though i had was the general cost of football now. Obvious it's become more but I do genuinely believe people are starting to want more for there money and expect more. You can't keep putting up the price of things across the whole experience and have no knock-on effect. I don't just mean Bfc I mean uk pro football.
Talksport had a quick chat few days ago where Ally was saying the general atmosphere at football games is not what it used to be around the whole country.
It's not just at turf. People are starting to expect something for their £s.

Be interesting to see season ticket sales for next year.
Doing it in January when "boring football" narrative is growing around the burnley name across the country. And we are no nearer knowing what division we will be in next year.

Personal I have a niggle in the background for my feelings about going up. Last year was a nightmare season, so much so my lad has been on 1 game this season even though he has season ticket.
The prize of promotion is literally to keep the club going, it's not that exciting a prize for the fans anymore. You can call that whatever you want. I hear the word entitled as a buzz word recently, it's not for me. It's reality of the situation.
How do we compete in the prem.? We can't.
So the prize is pretty much a nailed on relegation. Bit negative that but it's the reality.

I think a little bit of each of these points is creating the poor atmosphere, but the point would be forgotten during the match if we played on the front foot.

Last night we had 2 mins of sustained pressure and the crown started to lift. Only for it to revert to type very quickly.

It is what it is. There is no magic answer. Sadly it is a feedback loop. The quieter it is the more difficult it is to get people to start making noise. More exciting football is the only non cringe way to improve it. Almost by definition everything else is plastic and naff. The only thing I think could work is getting people to care about the team. I think SP has done all he can. But the massive turnover of players make us less invested than if it was Mee or Trippier or Arfield or Marney out there.

I love the “I don’t like the PL” shite. “We can’t compete”. But you like a league where the team we played last night has just broken their transfer record at £1.5m. Probably even less than half the amount Tresor will be getting this season in wages. You can’t have it both ways.

Atmospheres are changing simply because football stadiums and going to football is far more safer than previous decades. So it become safer for families to attend. It’s not a drunken lads club anymore.

Near the start, I said, and I quote, "These are not necessarily my ideas; I am just throwing a few suggestions out there."... I wasn't complaining about anything!...

And nobody said it had to be at half time!... There are simple policies that could be put in place to prevent that too, no matter the price of alcohol and it was aimed at a certain section of fans as you well know, not the majority who want to watch the actual game :D Do you really think the type of people in the posh seats care about the price of a pint of beer  They will come back late no matter what...

I was playing devil's advocate to hopefully trigger positive ideas, not smooth brains looking for an argument

1. I sat in this section last night and on my right there were the usual overzealous dwarves screaming at the officials, which I found really entertaining.
On the alcohol thing, I have noticed a trend for some BL supporters on the Jimmy mac side to be drinking Bene and hots from the concourse bar at half-time. Obviously, the stewards aren't checking, so I assume this happens in other stands along with the continuous vaping of CBD.

I agree with a few games. That is the downfall of tiki-taka football. The fans sit back and wait for something to happen after the long build-up so are waiting to be entertained. It was very quiet in a few games the last time in the Championship, but it was still far better and more positive overall compared to now...

We also had a few different unique chants for two or three players... It was a better and far more positive atmosphere in VK's first season than it is this season... Tella's passion, pace and runs helped the atmosphere too!...

I also feel like some of the hope has gone in terms of player connections since then... There is no point feeling connected and supporting an individual player if he's going to be sold in 6 months time so interaction and chanting of individual players is not as prevalent this season!

I have this argument with a lot of people, personally I'd rather see the best players in the world showing up at Turf Moor every other week. Thats the prize for promotion for us. There's nothing that says we wont build and stay there again like we did under Sean Dyche. Brighton, Brentford & Bournemouth have all managed it in recent years

But I think the euphoria of Kompanys promotion gave us expectations which were completely false. I remember thinking we had a good chance of top half. For us to be so far short of the required standard was a shock I’m not sure I’ve still gotten over. But I think Kompany believed his own hype and handled the problems we were faced with very badly. Not least in the obscene number of young, new untrusted players. Will it happen again next year? I don’t know. However my expectations will be hugely lower and ultimately that will help.

I don't think you get a good atmosphere at any ground in this country where the home team is one with a fair weight of expectation on it.
The atmosphere on the Turf, for me, has always been at it's best when we've been the underdog, backs against the wall type performances and that just simply isn't the case when we're in the Championship. As someone posted above, the atmosphere in the VK season was no different to now at times.
The home atmosphere at Portsmouth on Saturday was one of the best I've heard for a very long time and I would assume it comes from a sense of that underdog tag.
There isn't a feeling of us against them on the Turf and where I sit in the JMU, it very much feels like you're the odd one out if you dare to be pumped up for a game or want to chant a bit.
I don't know how we improve that, short of promotion and watching some dogged and determined performances.

Whenever I go I get the impression that a lot people aren't hugely passionate about it. They just go for something to do. I know of a few older types that have Burnley as a second team because they live in the town and have enough disposable income that they can afford it.
Instead of an atmosphere I just here the general him of people having a nice little catch up whilst watching the game which is a shame. It's probably the way the games gone.

A better repertoire of songs might help.

More exciting football would help but I think this seemingly endless run of midweek night home games has also had a detrimental effect on the the atmosphere.

Less people attending for work/school/ family/travel reasons, less time to see friends before/after the match and have a few beers etc.

I'm sure the next Saturday 3pm home match ( if we ever have one..) will see an improvement in the atmosphere.

You can shove the drum and trumpet where the sun don’t shine

We cannot reduce the price of booze because of the contract with levy. Also they can’t serve fast enough now so couldn’t cope with increased demand

Asking how to improve the atmosphere in the stands without mentioning what’s happening on the pitch is like asking why the Titanic didnt reach New York without mentioning the iceberg.

As it happens the atmosphere was fine last night during the bits of the game when we were on the front foot, playing at high tempo and creating chances, and it died down when we were shuffling the ball around slowly and unthreateningly between the defence and midfield. That’s probably not a coincidence.

As for the people saying we should try a drum almost as if they’re floating the idea to see how it goes down… well, we’ll stick it in the Bob Lord or Cricket Field Stand for the acoustics and everyone asking for it can be forced to sit next to it.

No perrol/Diesel vehicles anywhere near the ground. No log burning nearby.

The things that get people up off their seats are the things we just aren't doing this season. That's just a consequence of our success in an ironic way.

Someone picking up the ball and going on a driving run. Brilliant tackles at big moments. Scoring goals. Quick counters with players streaming forwards. etc.

Parker's tactics are working, there is absolutely no denying that and we do look unbeatable, but the side effect of those same tactics is that it doesn't really creating the exciting moments that lift the atmosphere.

catch 22 unfortunately.

Stop the stupid VK pass side and back nonsense
Attack quickly with fast passes Shelvey style out to the wings.Shoot on sight ( not Cullen )
It's not rocket science pass and move not pass and stand still.
