Team for Southampton FA Cup

Post by burnley007 » Thu Feb 06, 2025 2:06 pm

Will be wholesale changes again no doubt, not sure about the fitness of many players...

Hladky
Sonne Worrall Humphries Pires
Shelvey Laurent
Edwards Sarmiento Benson
Barnes

Add Koleosho and Brownhill if they're fit.

Brownhill is out for around a month, apparently.

Shelvey and Edwards starting depends if they are fit enough to do so, we don’t want them pulling up injured.

Sonne ——Worrall——Esteve——Humphreys
Edwards—Cullen——Shelvey——Hannibal

Mike Tresor (Burnley) - out
Despite making a recent return during the FA Cup tie against Reading, it’s understood Tresor is not fit to play and is unlikely to be available for the foreseeable future.

I would like to see Bauress and McDermott around the team.

I know it's a step up from Reading but I feel they deserve another chance to impress.

Both teams will definitely make at least 8 or 9 changes.

Think it's fair to see we will be pushed back at times so pace on the break is vital. Could be a perfect time to give Foster a run upfront and bring Koleosho back in if fit. Benson would give us a good balance between pace and being able to unlock them.

Bauress deserves another go and it'd be a nice blend of youth and experience to habe him next to Shelvey whilst giving Cullen a rest.

Edwards to come on later on.

I’d just like to see Benson get through about 75 mins and come off without any side effects ,because even if he’s only a one trick pony he can turn fullbacks inside out ,and could make the difference as a super sub for the run in.

I think I'd go full strength if I was Southampton manager. They are doomed to relegation so cup run would give them something positive out of the season. Going out to a championship side would be the cherry on the turd.

Having watched Parker's pre-match press conference I think it'll be as expected, a mix. Not 8 or 9 changes.

None of them are fatigued. If playing a match fatiigues them, they can do less fitness work in training and they'll be fine.

It's hard to believe it's in living memory that we had nine players who played 50+ games in a season, with three of them playing more than 60.

The intensity at which those games were played was nothing like it is now.

Is it the same in all sports? For example, when a tennis player plays a 6 hour semi-final does he need a week off before he can play again?

Would give Benson Shelvey and Edward’s half a game and would keep McDermott and Beauress around the squad

Tennis players cover under 2.5 km in a match, with very long rest periods between each bout of intensity, though the repetitive lateral motion I guess would take its toll - especially on the knees .... Footy players cover around 10 km a game, with differing levels of contact.

Chalk and cheese.

But most of the tennis players' distance is sprinting. They certainly don't look less tired after a long match than a footballer does. Have you got the sprinting stats?

45 mins each for edwards and benson on the right if possible. Hopefully Redmond is available and gets 30-45 mins too. McDermott would be an added bonus to see him again.

Perhaps a good opportunity to give fringe players a game, but perhaps an opportunity to see how our best available 11 plays against PL opposition....
that, of course, assumes that Saints will put out a strong 11.

Very worrying that we're potentially hoping for Humphries to stay injury and suspension free for the rest of the season.

Kept Anthony in just because I don’t think Parker will trust Edward’s or Benson from the off. Imagine he’ll be looking to get 30-45 minutes in both of them.

Shelvey on for one of the young lads at some point second half for the same reasons.

Chance to see Foster up top.

Quite experimental but I feel that Koleosho and Sarmiento both have something to prove. Shelvey and Barnes could do with a run out. If Bauress and McDermott don't feature you have to wonder why they didn't go out on loan.

Benson, Banel, Edwards, Hannibal on the bench. Seems like we've left ourselves a bit short on defenders.

This is a really winnable game against cut adrift Soton , but a mish mash team will likely struggle . If we completely changed defence and have an old dog like Barnes up front I fear the worse . Though if Scotty does really want the win ,we’re capable of putting a very lively side out indeed .

Exactly this, we need to use this game to give key players minutes, and see how they potentially gel. Personally due to Brownhill being out, Cullen/Shelvey with Hannibal in the 8 should be the way to go.

Does anyone know the situation with Redmond?

I think rounds 5,6 and the semis are on dates when we have league games. The only sensible thing to do tomorrow is give some players needed game time and bow out gracefully. We need to go up for the money to pay for the mad Summer window of 23.

Not really seen anybody's lineup that's made me think "Yeah that one" - but this is probably the closest. Maybe Pires instead of Humpreys and Hladky instead of Trafford.

It would be interesting to see how both Shelvey and Flemming get on with Foster through the middle.

I don't really see the point in playing Shelvey and Barnes together.
Shelvey will need someone running forward on to through balls.
