I know we could give Esteve and CJ 45 minutes each, but I'm sure SP wants to give them a complete break.
Unless he wants to test some players!

it wasn't just the fact he saw the pass, it was hit at Premier League pace - that's the biggest difference between a championship player and a PL player

Class player in his day, If he can replicate past form then he'll be very useful in the run-in.

Worall and Humphries as CBs, Pires LB v Southampton. Let's see how Bash does in his "natural" position.

Brilliant technique especially considering he's just come on in the 90th minute.

Has to be starting as soon as he's fit for me. Laurent has done a good job for us and definetely has his strengths, but some of his limitations with the ball are becoming obvious when we need to break teams down.

He was a terrific footballer in his prime. Technically better than anything we’ve had since Defour.

Hopefully he still possesses those talents.

Josh Laurent's passing in the last few games has been disgusting... I am amazed he stayed on last night... Get him replaced with JonJo!

He'll obviously take a few games to get going and so fully expect his minutes from the bench to increase but you could tell he still's got it. The pace of Foster (through the middle) with JonJo's vision/passing could be very useful.

Hopefully gets a start v Soton and be good to see Edwards get a spin and maybe even Benson ? We could have fielded a cracking little side if Koleo/Brownhill were fit too . Alas Scotty’s team will ( understandably I suppose ) be a mix n match hopscotch of junkyard dogs like Pirez, Laurent ,Barnes et al . Though hope springs eternal …

Sensible imo to mix it. Shelvey and Edwards to come and get 30 minutes would be good.

What I liked about that pass was not only where it went but the fact that it didn't go out of play. It meant the player could run on to it without having to first control it and could perhaps launch a cross with his first touch.

Unfortunately I'm not sure our players are up to this kind of thinking. Anthony may get to it but who would be in the middle to receive it? It will just be controlled and then passed back to Roberts, Egan-Riley etc..

That pass was amazing and the sort of thing we have needed all season. Different level. It’s called vision. Cullen, Laurant, Brownhill and Hannibal all have good attributes, but essentially are ball carriers/short passers. JJS is in a different league.

Some players do lack anticipation, such as Foster at times when had he been awake he'd have got to the ball a few times yesterday. But now we have someone like him I'm sure players will become more aware. We may not have signed a striker but I think him and Edwards will improve our attack considerably with goals being shared out.

It's always a bit of an eye opener when you see the difference in class between the levels, albeit just the one pass so far. Like when Defour signed and we could briefly see what a Champions League footballer can do.

Hopefully he's fit and fresh and we get plenty more from him over the next few months. Laurent hasn't let anyone down and has been a solid, value for money signing but he's never been at Shelvey's level.

As others have said, it was only a single pass and one of his first (or first) touches I think, but it was something totally different to what we'd seen in the previous 90 minutes. Perfectly weighted and rolled along the line ready to be picked up and crossed. Great to see.

It was also a smart ball in the context of seeing out a game. Turn the opposition by playing behind them and push up the pitch with no risk of losing the ball in a dangerous area
It was straight from the Dyche - Ashley Westood playbook, but with a bit more quality.

I will add, I hope that's what Parker brought him for and doesn't try to coach that kind of creativity out of him.

The weight, the accuracy, the different way of 'creating space' at point of contact and again 'finding space' for the ball to wait to be picked up by a teammate.
Now we have to hope that players get tuned into his way of playing. Create space, find space, attack space.

Why will he do that? Parker showed what he can do in our first 2 games - when he has the players. We now have JJ and Edwards added to the mix.

I'm not saying he will, just I hope he doesn't.

Some of the previous criticisms aimed at Parker during his managerial spells at previous clubs is that this is what he tried to do, coach any excess creativity/flair out of players - presumably because he has a very rigid, defense focused tactical desire. I think perhaps we see it here too sometimes - see lack of goals scored, zero goals conceded in 9 games and complaints from many fans of "boring" football.

Once he gets upto speed, there isn't a universe that exists where Laurent starts and Shelvey sits on the bench.

Cullen is the perfect foil for Shelvey to produce.

Marcus Edwards worked under Scott Parker at the Spurs Accademy and gave his main reason in signing for Burnley was to renew that relationship. Is Marcus Edwards not viewed as a creative player with flair?

I would like to think that as Parker matures he realises the blend of skills a team needs. He hasn’t succeeded in the PL yet, his team were hit for 9 last time he was in it, so a defensive necessity is probably burned into his brain. But no reason why Shelvey and Edwards cannot be part of that this season and next (I have no doubt Edwards is really being bought for next season primarily, as a difference maker, so if we don’t go up and he returns to Lisbon that is far from ideal).

I thought the deal with Edwards is he's permanent in the summer irrespective of what division we're in.

It'll be interesting to see if his class starts to rub off onto other players training and watching him in games.
It the psyche of players like him and Barnes, especially, that is as much behind them being here as what they can actually still to do.
What they attempted to do and the desire to do it.

There's no way Anthony could have read it, as he'd stood there being ignored by players, with the ball, looking directly at him, stood in space during the second half, all ignoring him.
I believe if he's expecting it he gets it and if other teams start to worry about it, it pushes their defence back stretches out their team and makes their press harder to achieve and helps us play out.
All about having different threats and mixing it up a bit.

If he starts with Hannibal then we will undoubtedly have two loony bins in midfield... wouldn't have either of them as Parker type players.

Parker could be a bit of a silent assassin in his playing days. Leave one on somebody and do a slow quiet retreat and leave it to the ref to sort out. I don't remember him being the kind of player to get in the ref's face.
