Could be Egan-Riley in the Cullen role or Pires even playing ahead of Humphreys on the left. Doubt he’ll change shape.

That's my prediction as well.

Strange line-up, not much goal threat there. (now watch them prove me wrong
)

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
Not so sure with that selection, complete midfield overhaul never played together at all?

A good game to try a new formation out if so. Should be an interesting watch!

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
Lots of changes were to be expected, but that line up is a bit like an unmade jigsaw.
I'm glad Edwards isn't starting because we look like we've turned up to make the numbers up. Taking part in a debacle wouldn't be a great start.
We'll have to see what Saints put out.

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
It doesn't look like it at all. Seems like a lot of thoughts gone into that line up. I think Parkers given up the possession before the game starts and wants Benson/Sarmiento to give us a threat on the break with Barnes giving them a platformColburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 2:10 pmLots of changes were to be expected, but that line up is a bit like an unmade jigsaw.

They’ve gone strong. Although strong is relative considering there’s 2 places between us in the pyramid.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 2:10 pmLots of changes were to be expected, but that line up is a bit like an unmade jigsaw.

Good to see Benson ,Shelvey , Sarm start , Pires and Barnes being the only weak links but Redmond , Fleming and Edward’s on bench give a plan B.

Hopefully Watford continue to do us a favour because a week on Monday it's Leeds v Sunderland !

Re the league programme, I genuinely believe our next three league games are our most important this season and will tell us whether we have a chance of top two or not.

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
I just wonder if he's going to try ER in a midfield role? He does occasionally drive from deep with power and maybe SP has thought that could be an option.

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
I don't see it.
Teams are made of partnerships on the pitch, which is why playing Bauress and McDermott together worked, and I can only see players who aren't used to each other or a system.
I'm not complaining, we have bigger fish to fry, just surprised.

I like the team for today, positive
Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
Could do with 'for beds' having a good game and not getting injured
Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
Shame Hull don’t play today. Will be fresher for midweek.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 2:22 pmGreat to see Redmond back today!

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
I thought a few of the U21s had been left out of their game in midweek so they could play in this?
There's only Bauress on the bench.

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
Surely starting Bauress and Mcdermott together against a Premier league team would be more like giving it up before we'd kicked off.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 2:24 pmI don't see it.

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
If I was hazarding a guess I would say.
Hdlaky
Humphrey’s, Egan Riley, Worrall, Pires
Sonne, Hannibal, shelvey
Benson, Barnes, Sarmiento

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
I think we've done that anyway.
As I said I'm easy about it, but I would have thought to give ourselves a chance we would have picked a team, nothing against any of the players who are starting, I just don't recognise a team there.

Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
Southampton have obviously decided they are relegated. Only a couple of changes in their XI from their win over Ipswich.

Burnley express saying back 4 with pires left wing
Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
Yeah, and they have only got 3 games in 15 days vs our 5, is what I read. I guess they kinda have to give their fans something to cheer about this season.agreenwood wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 2:40 pmSouthampton have obviously decided they are relegated. Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
I expected changes and we've got a squad that can certainly withstand wholesale changes and still put out an extremely good and balanced team, but to change the system at the same time might be asking too much, especially against quality opposition (despite their current league position) who are fielding almost their best team. We'll see!
Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
We’re playing the same system.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 2:48 pmI expected changes and we've got a squad that can certainly withstand wholesale changes and still put out an extremely good and balanced team, but to change the system at the same time might be asking too much, especially against quality opposition (despite their current league position) who are fielding almost their best team. Re: Southampton vs Clarets match thread
Would make no sense whatsoever for them to make loads of changes. They're down anyway, may as well try and have a cup run.agreenwood wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 2:40 pmSouthampton have obviously decided they are relegated. Only a couple of changes in their XI from their win over Ipswich.

Sonne plays centre mid for his countryDark Cloud wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 2:51 pmWell we'll see, but the suggestion is with that line up it will be 3 at the back and if it isn't, then one of Pires, E-R or Humphreys looks like they'll play in midfield, when tbf we have genuine midfielders who could do that.
