Tough decisions for Parker ahead when you look at possibly 5 players being left out completely on a match day. One of the reasons why I hope we get an easier tie in the next round and go further.

Re: Bauress
Just seen that the same question was posted above and answered with Jay and Lafferty. Good examples. We're talking a fair while back now though.
Re: Bauress
I think your 2nd paragraph is right in terms of being for their development. Unfortunately, your 1st paragraph is where it has been predominantly irrelevant to us in the last few decades. The ones going out on loan aren't good enough anyway, so then it reverts back to being for their own career progression elsewhere.ArmchairDetective wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2025 9:27 amGenuine question Tony. How often have our younger players been out on loan and come back more ready for our first team? I do sometimes wonder whether it's better for their development to stay in and around our first team, play against them in training, and show what they can do in cup games and in odd cameos in the league.
Or maybe im thinking too much about first team readiness and not about the players development, though I think they go hand in hand.
Hopefully we can improve our productivity in this area and get some coming through in the next few years. To an extent we're the victims of our own success being in the PL, or top end Championship. You then need outstanding talents in the set up to get into a squad at that level. Our academy does seem to be improving, but I'd say we're still a way off producing top talents, certainly not in significant numbers anyway.
Difficult to attract them too given the catchment area, the recent video that focused on Bauress emphasised this. We can't compete with other North West academies, at least for now. Positive bringing Casper in and possibly back to Cat 1.

If you watched footy for over half a century, a player comes on receives the ball has balance, gives it and moves and seems to have time and space and you just know he has something

Re: Bauress
The reason why so few players go out on loan and don't make it as first team regulars for ourselves is because it's very difficult to make it as a first team regular for ourselves.
Sadly, a lot of players will fall at this final hurdle. This doesn't make going out on loan pointless or a dead-end. Sometimes a player might skip this hurdle but it's still the most trusted path.
A yound player who completes a successful loan spell demonstrates they have the character and determination for regular first team professional football. Not just the skills and athleticism that can get players through at youth level.

Re: Bauress
I'd have Bauress in the squad instead of Laurent from now on. And I've got nothing against Laurent.

Are you the same Claret Tony that's over in the Sonne thread writing him off as only fit for backup after 2 games?

Just looks a naturally gifted player. Great that we have so much competition in the midfield area imo as it can only push him on even more and up his game if he wants to be a part of the 1st team squad.

Bauress and McDermott from previous games both look like they could step up to be championship players, premier league players who knows in time

Re: Bauress
About 120 minutes. Although my statement is probably more to do with how much football I’ve seen from Laurent than Bauress.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2025 10:56 amAnd how much first team football have you seen him play to make that judgement?
I’m not going to be negative about him because I do think he has his qualities, but from what I’ve seen in Bauress, I think he could offer those same qualities and maybe also add something on top - passing range, composure, etc.
I’m not advocating bringing him in to start, although if not promoted that might be a real possibility next season when we’ll probably lose Brownhill and possibly Shelvey. I just think having him on the bench to give him minutes with us when we can would be good for his development.
I think our team should always have one or two coming up from the Academy. They do need to be good enough of course and being truthful I don’t think we’ve really had enough of Bauress’ calibre to warrant that. And Kompany’s spending splurge has left our squad too bloated to enable it either, but I’d say he’s potentially a special talent.
Listening to Parker’s interview last night sounded like he’s given him a bit of a headache, anyway.

Re: Bauress
The height point is a good one, and he seems to be our only midfielder that will run with it. Defensively he’s very solid and mature too. Passing wise he’s wasteful.
Bauress is no midget either though, so far hasn’t put a foot wrong positionally and seems to be a bit better on the ball.
I’d start experience personally, but do think there’s a place for Bauress on the bench and minutes if we’re comfortable, both for his own development and to help keep the starters fresh.

He needs development but as others have said it should have been through a loan to play week in week out, we are chasing promotion we've no time to bed youngsters in.NewClaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2025 11:26 amThe height point is a good one, and he seems to be our only midfielder that will run with it. Who do we drop from the bench to give him minutes though...Shelvey, Laurent, Brownhill, Hannibal?
He's played well in the cup but week in week out in the championship is a big ask for the lad.
Personally if we could have now players are fit I'd have been asking if we could send Sarmiento back in January so we've an extra place on the bench for Agyei, McDermott or Bauress each week

Fully agree he shouldn't be making our strongest 11 or playing every game but he has something others don't.
I don't think Bauress is the answer in the games were trying to force things though either

Re: Bauress
I think maybe the answer is rotation to free up a space, although as the squad recovers from injury I accept that gets harder and harder. For example, is Barnes going to be heavily used on Wednesday after a full game yesterday? Probably not, could he make way? Sure we could give Laurent or Pires a week out of the team too.bumba wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2025 11:58 amHe needs development but as others have said it should have been through a loan to play week in week out, we are chasing promotion we've no time to bed youngsters in.

I think when you look at Wharton, Miley, Mainoo, Gray - they’ve all taken big steps up from the Academy to play first team football without loans to my knowledge. In the former and latter’s case, at a similar or younger age, and starting in the Championship every week; if you’re good enough you’re old enough, as they say. If we’re saying he’s not good enough that’s a different discussion but he has looked it to me.
And I’m not even suggesting we start him, just find space on the bench.
The main part of this argument that I don’t really understand is that according to CT we did look for a loan but presumably there were no suitable options. In which case it’s all irrelevant. What’s definitely best for his development now is training with the first team, games with the 21s where the schedule allows and minutes with the first team where we can.

Re: Bauress
In the latest 8 minute club video which focuses on Bauress primarily, Brownhill is interviewed and cautions us as to how far he still has to go to break through even though he is doing very well so far.
I reckon Josh has hit the nail on the head.
Look at Marcus Edwards - ended up without a club at 20 despite that huge talent and the mega plaudits he had as a teenager. So difficult to break through as a talented youngster.

Re: Bauress
Bauress is a very impressive young player, always looks calm, it woud be great for him to get more game time not only for himself but it becomes a superb advertisement for us in trying to attract other young lads to our academy. Being able to prove the pathway to opportunity is a big thing.

Josh Brownhill was playing for Preston at 17 and it didn't do him any harm.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2025 3:31 pmIn the latest 8 minute club video which focuses on Bauress primarily, Brownhill is interviewed and cautions us as to how far he still has to go to break through even though he is doing very well so far.

Re: Bauress
It's a common problem put in kids too early and ruin their confidence as Liverpool do at times or give them a run till they prove they really are the real deal.
I believe Joe is the real deal and would start him v Hull .He can score goals from cm and that alone makes him worth a start

Unfortunately I don't think Bauress is anywhere close to the levels of the players you've mentioned or I'm certain he'd be starting each week.NewClaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2025 3:28 pmI think maybe the answer is rotation to free up a space, although as the squad recovers from injury I accept that gets harder and harder. Hopefully he gets a loan in the summer to a championship club for 12 months development.

Could he be our new Trevor Steven, seems to have a certain balance when on the ball.

Re: Bauress
Maybe not, guess we’ll have to wait and see. I definitely think he’s the best prospect that we’ve had in a while though and would say the best way to make sure he gets a championship loan next season (assuming we’re not in it ourselves) would be to get him minutes in a good team to allow him to impress. If we do that, he’ll stand a much better chance of someone taking a look at him.
