Jeremy Sarmiento

Post by Foshiznik » Thu Feb 13, 2025 12:33 pm

Genuine question - What is he good at?

I've watched him in the 10 and on both wings this season and i am really struggling to see what he provides us with when he comes on other than a boost of often much needed energy and enthusiasm.

I want to be clear, i'm not saying he's a bad player at all, it's just that I don't know if it's a matter of his incompatibility with our style of play, his lack of maturity/control or the formation simply doesn't fit his style of player.

Any thoughts on this?

Why is Sarmiento disliked by our fans so much? Most teams in this league would jump at the chance of having him in their squad yet our fanbase seemingly would be happy if his contract expiry date was brought forward to tomorrow.

This looks suspiciously like a post on the Brownhill thread...

How embarrassingly immature. I'm sorry that the other thread upset you but maybe the better option would have been to just ignore it and let the rest of us have healthy debate on different topics.

Not disliked by me. I welcome the energy and forward drive he brings when he gets on. But for some good keeping, he’d have a couple more goals on his CV. I’d love him to stay.

Most players need a run of games. It's very hard to be in and out of the team and make an impact. He looked decent when Parker had him floating in off the wing around December time, but then found himself back out of the team. He doesn't want to play as a winger, and I'm not convinced he's as good playing in the hybrid 8/10 role that Brownhill and Hannibal are. He's not a luxury player though, and maybe given a run of games there he would be looking just as good as those players.

I like his energy and enthusiasm. I like that he can carry the ball, go past people and be more direct. He usually comes on when we've stopped creating or seemingly run out of ideas. He can play wide or through the middle. He shows for the ball and is prepared to shoot. Not sure what's not to like.

That's a really good point. He's not played alot of minutes as most of his appearances have been cameos.

Everybody says he's a no 10 - him, his home club, Scott Parker.

I'm not saying he's a bad player but he's never looked like a 10 to me.

Flemming probably would though if we actually played him there.

I am often confused on here, when it comes to discussing the 'number 10 role'.
People tend to have differing ideas as to what a number 10 is.
A number 10 is a position rather than a type of player.

A number 10 can be a twin striker in a 4-4-2. Good in the air, like an Andy Lochhead
A number 10 can be a goal scoring striker, who is not a typical target man. Tricky, skilful player, like a Kenny Dalgleish, or a Peter Beardsley.
A number 10 can be a hybrid, goal scorer who plays in support of a main striker, running beyond, or one who can also play as the front man, like a Zian Flemming.

Then you can have someone who might be called a number 6 or a number 10, like a Trevor Brooking, Alan Devonshire, Frank Lampard.
Or would they be an advanced number 6 or a withdrawn number10. Who knows for certain?

I tend to agree

I’m not sure Sarmiento knows what his best position is. I personally think he’s better suited to an advanced midfielder role, because he has the technical ability to beat a man and slip a pass through but just not sure he’s used to playing there. He looks very raw every time I see him.

In my opinion there is a place for him on the side, we just haven't worked out how it works- how SP is playing him right now doesn't work.

Think he’s a more up market version of Koleosho, and last week when he had a free role against Southampton I thought it was one of his better games, but still not sure he is capable of tying down a starting spot.

If he's struggling at all, it's only because he doesn't play regular, and when he does he can pop up anywhere.
All footballers benefit from a regular spot in a set team, on that basis alone it isn't fair to pass any negative judgement on the lad.
He's looked OK, on occasion very good, but I doubt we'll see the real Sarmiento unless we suffer an injury crisis.

He’s a bag of energy with good movement and a bit of trickery thrown in, perfect to have coming on from the bench, and don’t forget “Blondes have more fun”.

His best game for us came against Southampton , where the striker and the 2 inside forwards/ wingers were not as rigid as they have been in our normal 4-2-3-1. However he worked his backside off and his pressing was very good, rigid or not

I remember when we got him I was reading comments from Ipswich fans that he did well for them on lots of occasions off the bench but did nothing when starting, I think we have seen similar however Ipswich scored nearly 100 goals so I think the way we have played has taken away some elements of his game. I'm not sure I think he's offered enough to warrant a permanent deal at the money Brighton would likely ask.

Definitely looks a number 10 to me and his movement off and on the ball is excellent especially how he receives the ball as he twists and turns looking to create space and carry the ball

Don't think we've seen the best of him and probably wont with where he is in terms of the squad but if we get into the run in needing to go at teams and get goals think he's got a lot still to offer us

I’m still yet to be wowed by him if I’m honest. It may well change and I can’t fault his effort as he clearly puts a shift in every opportunity he gets, but other than Portsmouth at home I’m really struggling to recall a genuine moment of quality. He reminds me of a dog with a balloon.

Not helped as we don't really play with anyone as a number '10' but some people feel the need to have to put one in every team. One of the midfielders (Hannibal/Brownhill) moves up to help with a press, but in possession and defending in our own half they play either side, and in advance of, Cullen.

Many including me have used the phrase 'flatters to deceive'.

He goes on mazy runs, has the body movements for this and it looks good. Unfortunately it usually ends with a poor pass or just losing the ball. His shooting where he had good opportunities is disappointing. He also works hard but makes annoying errors too. He should be the sort of player to come on against tired teams and rip through them, but he isn't.

His best spell was when he supported Anthony and Roberts on the right earlier in the season.

I've no idea what his best position is in our set up if it's not an out and out winger and we have better.

Maybe not in England but a number 10 is a playmaker. And there are few of them.

Has been hit and miss but he was fantastic at Southampton in my opinion. He's still very young and has a lot of really good strings to his bow, just needs to become more consistent with his decision making at the final moment. I would be more than happy to sign him should we be promoted.

Probably depends at what year you started getting into football and if you played any management computer games.

Growing up, a number 10 is/was a target man which when in a 4-4-2 was often partnered with a striker - Think Heskey(10) and Owen(9).

But I've never thought of 10 as the goalscoring striker - that's the number 9.

Would you have picked him over Hannibal after the Stoke game?

Well, I would say if pressed, that a number 10 is a left sided attacking midfielder.
Think Frank Lampard, a prolific goalscorer, and John McGinn, an occasional goalscorer.
I can tell however, that there is no hard and fast number 10 type, going off how different people categorise specific players as typical number 10's.

Good question - absolutely no idea in this day and age to be honest. Brighton tend to charge the Earth but not sure they really could with Sarmiento with him being potential rather than anything close to finished article. Maybe £7m? I think he has so much potential with his confidence on the ball, touch, skill and he's only 22 (yet has decent experience, closing in on 100 games as well as 24 caps for Ecuador).

I am just keen that if we are promoted we focus on keeping this squad together as priority number one, with a couple of stellar additions in crucial areas (Tella....). No more £100m+ outlays on entire squad turnovers, lets try and keep the atmosphere and positivity the team has and bring in in a couple of players who are going to want to add to it and stick around if we are to get relegated.

Left-sided attacking midfielder is 11 :-)

Fully concur about the squad, VK should be locked up for crimes against football because of how he just discarded the team that got us up.
