Joe worrall

JW on £35K seems a bit on the high side for a backup player? or was he signed to be first choice?

Re: Joe worrall
You'd imagine that he was signed as first choice. He's still only 27 and has loads of games at top of the championship and premier league.
Also bear in mind that they've just estimated (made up) those figures.

Re: Joe worrall
He was absolutely signed to play every week - nobody could have predicted his injury and CJ’s emergence. Sliding doors moment that.

Re: Joe worrall
Came in as first choice, got a foot injury (in training I think) and then CJER became very very very good and grabbed his place. Exactly how football squads should work.

Similar thing happened with Gibson. And some fans then said Gibson was a terrible signing. I wish I could see the future that some fans have.jedi_master wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2025 11:26 amHe was absolutely signed to play every week - nobody could have predicted his injury and CJ’s emergence. Re: Joe worrall
And with CJs emergence, what a good player we've got on the bench, waiting.
It's a long, long slog this league.

Re: Joe worrall
Regardless it seems too high. Maybe I'm wrong but 35k a week to a centre back after relegation sounds unlikely
Re: Joe worrall
I can’t imagine we’d be paying him anything like that.

I think Worral might be insurance in case we don’t resign cj. He’s capable and proven .

Re: Joe worrall
Worrall is a good defender, but nowhere near as capable on the ball as Egan-Riley.

Re: Joe worrall
I don’t think the Gibson things was similar at all.
We paid boro in the region of £15m for Gibson, at least that’s the info that was bandied about. We had Ben Mee at the time who was stalling over his contract. In the end, he signed an extension, leaving Gibson to find a way into the team. There’s no way on this or any other planet that BFC paid that sort of money for cover. Gibson was bought to play, because we (wrongly) assumed Mee was off. It was a good move really, because had we not signed him, and Mee left, this board would’ve been in meltdown over us not planning ahead.

Re: Joe worrall
He was signed and expected to be a starter. He got injured and CJER stepped in and the rest is history. Unfortunate for Worrall, but that's how it goes.

Re: Joe worrall
You have to remember it was the last week of the window, O’Shea wanted out and was suddenly gone, Ekdal was injured, Delcroix injured, and no one knew the player that CJER would become. We were probably a bit over a barrel but an experienced Premier League player was not going to leave that and come here on the cheap. Whether it’s value for money is up for discussion but remember the chaos of that last week and put things into perspective
