I remember when we played Preston away back in 2002 ish, it was a 5:30 Saturday Evening Sky game.
Not sure if I remember correctly, but didn't the game have a small delay due to the Burnley fans and stewards at the front of the stand?
I definitely remember there was some nasty scenes there, clear for everyone to see on the TV. Kicking off like crazy at the front of that Burnley stand, took them a while to get the Burnley fans under control.
Pretty sure ever since then.. the police would not allow any more late weekend kick-offs for Burnley at Deepdale to deter the Burnley fans from getting too drunk.
I believe the following one was even moved to a dinner time kick-off on police advise/it wasn't on telly. The crazy 5-3 or something game, when Ricardo Fuller ran rings around us.
That said, I have to say that I feel less comfortable on away games than I used. Mainly due to the coked up young lads at away games these days.
The nationwide lack of discipline to kids also makes me more cautious.. they do what they want these days.
Yeah, it was lively that day.
It certainly kicked off at half time under the concourse with Police after they shut the bars.
The coppers just CS gassed everyone under there.
We scored early in the 2nd half and quite a few run on the pitch.

Wow, that sounds horrible. Letting that off in a concourse.. I'm sure alot of innocent people would have got caught in that.
I wasn't there, but watched it on TV at the time.. and it looked nasty then to a 16/17 year old me.
I remember the aftermath in the Burnley express/ old claretsmad.. it was the Burnley express where I read about the police banning any future late kick-offs for Burnley at Deepdale to stop our fans getting too drunk, and becoming uncontrollable again.

There was a Friday night game there in the 2nd Dyche promotion that was very much on the edge. The police turned up at the pub a lot of Burnley fans were in after having word about some of the behaviour from the pub staff. They made everyone there get on buses straight to the ground at half 5 and wouldn't give us a choice in the matter
There was also fans on the pitch after our goal. We were lucky that day that there was no controversy in the game because it definitely had an edge to the away crowd that day.

I saw a report of one of our own fans getting clobbered on the way out yesterday as he wasn’t walking down the steps fast enough. We really do have some vermin supporting our club.

If i could get regular tickets, i'd go to most of the away games - i can't
Might be a good opportunity here though if a lot more are winging
If you've been going on for 30 years as you claim, how come you can't get away tickets ?

Can add me to the list of people who’ve given up on away games.
Maybe an age thing and it’s not just our fan base but some of the behaviour and language puts me off. Most of it is pretty pathetic stuff but it’s not an environment I find enjoyable and certainly wouldn’t want to expose a child to it.

Look at you on this thread castigating some of our supporters because of the behaviour you've witnessed and being upset at anyone questioning your experience. Yet on another thread you were completely unwilling to accept someone else's lived experience that some of these fans who you describe as drugged up morons could also be racist
You're not the only one though as we've got the idiot flipflop happy to call our fans vermin but at the same time get really defensive that theses vermin fans could possibly also be racist
So you think the poster who said that the majority of Burnley fans, and indeed the majority of people living in Burnley were racist, should have gone unchallenged?
And to be clear I don't think anyone has mentioned the groups being discussed on this thread as racist.

It's not just Burnley experiencing this kind of behaviour. A Liverpool fan, ST holder at Anfield, has stopped going away because of the same things. Drugged up fans causing issues with other fans of the same club.

For me,5 decades on now, some of the most memorable away games, promotions at Scunthorpe, York, 80''s in the snow at Halifax, Carlisle with the lilo etc etc were fantastic atmospheres with everyone just enjoying the moments.
I honestly don't remember then what I've experienced in the last few years, the coked-up morons who hardly watch the match, generally revelling in behaving like anti-social neanderthals.
My last away game was Sunderland in the Championship under VK. A couple of late teen brain donors spent the entire match bouncing around like Zebedee on speed, banging into everyone nearby, arms around people's necks, showers of spit trying to sing offensive unfunny songs.
So I'm also in the 'not for me now' brigade sadly.

I can see both sides of the coin really. Remember going to Preston as a kid in the 90s and was fighting in lumps, half the Burnley end racially abusing Kurt Nogan and nobody batted an eyelid.
All seater stadiums haven't helped. In the days of terracing those that wanted to find a quiet spot away from the riff raff generally could.

Aye, I remember those games too, and like you say, everyone was up for a good day out, yet I seem to remember, though my memory might be incorrect here, that some of our fans were kicking the shite out of each other at Wrexham only a couple of seasons after the Lilo at Carlisle.

Having been to 8 away games this season I really can't see the problem. Barring the issue mentioned above, Preston seemed to be fairly good going. We went in the pubs before and after even in the town centre, there was a bit of singing but nothing that crossed a line.
I take 2 young children to these games and not once have felt that it was unsafe for them
I think it's just another excuse to have a dig.
Wherever you put so many people together in a small area there's always going to be a few arguments, just natural.
We are no worse than any other team

I have rarely been to away games in the last 20 years and I took my 12 year old Grandson Saturday which was his first taste of a big derby game.We both enjoyed our day out and hopefully go back for the cup game.We had a good view and the fan behaviour was nothing I was not expecting my only gripes was an issue trying to get in with the e ticket a packed concourse and having to stand up all game which I knew I would have to.Deepdale is probably the ground I've been to most and I've not been since the 80s and seeing the park across the road fetched back some vivid memories of running battles and being ambushed on a night game going back to the train station I know there are knobheads coked up and drunk acting all lairy but today's experience are nothing compared with the late 70s and 80s where you really were not certain to get home in one piece

Yeah, it’s no better or worse than before. We’ve just got older. I’m still just about at an age where I enjoy the livelier atmosphere away, occasional idiots included. My lad loves it.
The time will come soon enough when I won’t want to be a part of it but I’ll just bow out then. I wouldn’t want the whole away day culture for young lads to change just to suit me, I’ve had my fun.

Took my 6yr old for his first away derby on Saturday. We arrived around KO, straight in for a pie and to the seats. Loads of young families around us, just like at home in CFS you notice how much bad language there is but cant complain about that.
Although we didnt go down at h/t (he needed the 15min sit down!) I didnt feel a bad atmosphere at all, inside or walking back to the car. Been there when it's been far worse

It sounds like it's still fun going away. Shame I live so far away. Still, Cambridge away in midweek in the late '80s used to be a laugh.

I guess the natural problem with going away is that you’ve no idea from one game to the next who’ll you’ll be sat with.
I go with my 18 year old daughter and there are times when she has to listen to some pretty misogynistic language around her. That’s the only thing I usually take issue with.
On Saturday we had the usual “If you can’t bang a woman, bang a drum” and “tits, fanny and clarets” caveman stuff, topped with the drunk bloke directly behind her somehow getting his hands tangled in her hair and scratching her head in the process. It was an accident, but from her point of view it was a pretty odd and unpleasant thing to happen. She said she just felt uncomfortable the whole game.
I don’t mind standing for 90 mins, I stay clear of the concourse at half time and try and avoid the nobheads, but it’s harder to avoid it if you’re unlucky and enough to be seated near someone who has no qualms in shouting about “banging” women whilst sat directly behind a young woman and isn’t sober enough to control what he’s doing with his hands.

The incident happened right next to me. There was a family of about 7 sat behind us but in just 3 toseats so they spread themselves into the aisle and down to my row and next to me.
People struggled to get past them all game and what I thought happened after the final whistle was a man fell forward and into another man who thought he’d pushed him so he turned round and started punching him.
Was awful to see to be honest as it seemed like a genuine mistake caused by some numpties standing in the aisle and not in their seats.
I was near the bottom of the seating and a young lad, on his own was in front of me. Then 2 gents came for their seats, next to him. No problem except one was large. Standing up, he was eventually edged more in the aisle. Then, to make matters worse, another tall man joined the 2 and they took all the space, forcing the young man into the aisle. At the end of the match, two items were thrown onto the pitch, in the goal. The keeper picked one up, and then dropped it into the goal. I think it was a harmless object but that's not really the point, is it? Poor behaviour from the few make a poor reputation for the many and the club.

Feels like a relatively new phenomenon that a section of our away fans feeling like they can sit where they want. We’ve had all seater stadiums for well over two decades and I can't remember this problem appearing until the last few years

I’ve been to all games home and away this season and the best away game for me was Plymouth away. Brilliant fans, no hint of trouble and of course the result helped.
The worst, last Saturday at PNE. We were in the middle of the usual coked up, stone island k nobs - all smoking, abusive no marks. Should see them when they go see their Nana’s on a Sunday though - idiots !

I agree about it being an age thing. As will be the case when today's under 30s who mock the over 60s now will in turn stop going for the same reasons...and of course they will in turn be mocked by the under 30s of the day.
My last away game Bristol City in the Kompany Championship season. Nothing unsavoury or untoward happened, I just felt it no longer held any appeal.

Spot on - dedicated fans who support our team.
One of the Coke head, Stone Island brigade from Saturday did not watch any of the game. It just looked completely dazed and zombified !
I love the derby games but even I am considering giving it all up now because of these idiots.

I don’t do the rovers games cause I prefer not to be around too many fiends on both sides
City away when we got battered under VK my lad needed the toilet but we had to go down half way through the first half cause the Que for the bogs was 15 deep … all must have been desperate for a number 2

I think people have realised that stewards won't intervene or move people.
Same on the trains up and down the country, you are lucky if nobody is sat in your reserved seat.
Maybe it's social media videos showing people the bad behaviour and copying? Maybe the cutbacks from police to stewards haven't helped?

I think the stuff quoted on here about the over 60s being less tolerant is rubbish, and its actually the opposite.
When I was younger, if somebody had been sexist, and drunkly touching my daughter as someone described earlier I would have taken on the idiot, same with the ones spilling drinks over me at hull and stoke, obviously it would cause more trouble, so now we move if possible or just put up with it. I cannot believe that some "fans" think this type of behaviour is acceptable

The only thing that's changed on the football side of things is the loyalty points system, which was changed to allow the younger fans to attend away games

Drugs have changed too, it used to be weakened cocaine what fans were high on now there is all sorts on the market with 2/3 different drugs even being mixed together to make new drugs. These are what the younger fans are dabbling in making them feel untouchable.
The football is almost secondary on their days out they aren't even that interested it just in their minds gives them an excuse to get completely off their box.

I don't know anything about the way the drugs are made up, but totally agree about their behaviour, but they also have to get tickets to attend.

Slightly off topic but did anyone see the idiot at Blackburn away outside before the game literally slating Burnley fans at the bar for not joining in any of his coked up songs? He even said at one point I hope we get beat. How he didn’t get chinned is beyond me. It ain’t an age thing because I’m nowhere near 60, love a laugh etc but even I’ve noticed in recent years an increase of idiots.

It's not just kids, either, is it. I've seen middle-aged scroats too, well into their 50s and over, utterly trashed on booze and coke while behaving like bellends.

**** will be ****, football or not.
The seating thing is widely seen at modern football with the points/members systems. Groups of friends can no longer always buy all together, so end up getting their own when they can and naturally want to sit together. It's not just a Burnley thing unfortunately.

The general view of the younger fans now is one of 'its an away game you don't have an allocated seat, we will sit where we want and you will have to' its not just a Burnley thing, younger fans are all of this opinion, not sure where the 'rule' came from. I would imagine its purely down to a group maybe not all being able to get tickets together so just do it anyway.

The only thing that's changed on the football side of things is the loyalty points system, which was changed to allow the younger fans to attend away games
Points system was rightly changed as to not make it a closed shop, I have enough points and don't struggle to get tickets for away games but I'd personally like to see the club just allow all tickets to go straight on sale to season ticket holders apart from Blackburn games depending how many they've given us

It was certainly more than half. As a teenager at the time I imagine I joined in, didn't think anything of it at the time, although the P word was horrific, even then, its just what was done/sang.
On a positive note, it certainly wouldn't get sung today.
I noticed Nogan in the Vintage Clarets squad lately, I wonder just how fondly he thought of his time here.

Not long after we scored I had some young lad almost frothing at the mouth appear out of nowhere screaming for me and those around me to “get behind the lads”….. same thoughts that he was lucky no one stuck one on him……
Nice lad he was……..

Has this chopper been known to wear a hideous Burberry shirt? If so he also started the same on our own fans at Spurs a few of seasons ago. Shortly after he threw and hit someone in the home stand with a coin.

My missus doesn't like coming to Turf any more. She's been going with her dad since she was a nipper, but she doesn't feel safe any more. From idiots diving into you when we score, to scores of blokes using the women's toilets on the Longside to do sniff (and stewards doing eff-all about it), she can't be bothered with it all and I don't blame her. Can hardly be bothered myself sometimes. Shame as I do enjoy it when it's actually about the football.
