Fear not....Leeds will beat the blades, we'll beat them at home and then Blackburn will be devastated to do us a favour in the penultimate game of the season against them, but they'll have too, to stay in the playoffs themselves..

Last 3 home games....gtclaret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 12:40 pmIt's not negative to say that as things stand,we are not going to get enough points to finish in the top two.For example, let's take a typical 5 games.Sheff Utd may lose one,but win four (12 points). Whilst we we probably win two and draw three, without conceding (9 points), that's the problem and unless we change this will not change. Each in particular home game has a 0-0 feeling to it. Let's be honest, what is the most likely scoreline on Friday. If Sheffield Wednesday set themselves up right and manage the game, time waste etc,we just hope we get lucky and score.I don't know why Benson and Shelvey are not being used, but we have to make changes or it will be over very soon
Battered Hull - won 2-0
Battered Oxford won 1-0
Drew 0-0 with Leeds United.....
Only one of them felt remotely close to a nil nil game.... when both teams cancelled each other out.
So defeatist this fan base..... it used to be supportive, full of hope, angry when required..... now it's meek, negative, whiney.
Final reminder on this.... football league tables are not examples of straight line extrapolation, especially when the pressure of a promotion campaign kicks in.

But I think we've every chance of overhauling Sheff Utd.

It was clear to most that a proper striker was needed pre season and then in the window. We’d have been right up there if we had got one. We look more of a play off side because of it.

We are literally going a whole season without a recognised number 9.
Flemming has done well but it’s not his position and he’s only there because Jay, Ash, Foster, Hontundji haven’t been upto it at any stage of the season.
No one should be surprised that we don’t score many goals. As it stands, the failure to address this in January is costing us top 2. I’ll happily stand corrected and take my hat off to them if we go up.
We are creating more & better chances, but again, we don’t have a goalscoring striker to finish them.

That’s betting odds.
The most likely outcome is 0-0 as it’s most common score achieved for Burnley this season with 33% of our games finishing that score.
We have also failed to score in 42% of our games

If a coin is tossed 50 times, and lands heads every time, what is the probability of the next coin toss being heads? And what odds would you offer on it?

Wednesday have only had two 0-0s all season, 1 home, 1 away. Have let in 25 in 16 away at around 1.5 per game which needs to be taken into account.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 1:20 pmThat’s betting odds.

That's extremely unlikely & if that was the case you'd replace the dodgy double sided headed coin & replace it with a kosher 1 checking both sides for a head & tail & if it appeared that way you would go 50/50. By all means at least propose something that wouldn't be so far fetched of a scenario.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 1:26 pmTell me you don't understand probability, without telling me you don't understand probability.

Using the logic of some of the bed wetters out there, it is a wonder any team keeps trying when a goal behind, given that it is odds against they will lose.
For the record I have us as 35% likely to get top two now, with Sheffield about 75% and Leeds about 90%. Sunderland 0%. All in my head.
Doesn't mean we give up. That feel may change within 7 days.

The players are far too professional to give up they’ll keep going & rightly so. The fans slowly will if the gap keeps increasing. An acceptance of what will probably happen isn’t saturating any sheets but as things currently stand it’s too early to call.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 10:50 pmUsing the logic of some of the bed wetters out there, it is a wonder any team keeps trying when a goal behind, given that it is odds against they will lose.

It's really hard to find a decent #9, but it's frustrating when we keep having these random speculative punts on players (Houtondji, Banel etc), when we don't have the fundamentals in the squad down.
Sounds harsh and yes, they could develop into good players or make money for the club but when I think of the fees for them sort of players and wages combined... That's a ready made, first team player, no?
Re: congrats leeds and sheff u
It is looking more and more likely that Leeds and Sheff U will finish top two. They seem to be able to win even when not playing well. We are playing well but just can't score enough goals. Likelihood is that we will be in the play offs. Problem with that is again our lack of goals and if it goes to penalties even with Trafford I wouldn't be confident we could score even from a penalty.

I think they scored the last pen didn't they? So according to some of the maths brains on here, Burnley will never miss a penalty again. We just need to hope they don't end up playing a team who also scored their last penalty, or else everhbody could be locked in at Wembley for infinity

Sunderland…… when the pressure is applied…… lose back to back games.
Obviously this wasn’t possible given the fact they’d not lost in previous run of games.

And what benefit is it to us that Leeds won?
If Sheff United beat them we are looking at a four point gap between ourselves and the top two, whereas it could have been down to one if Sunderland had won.

Sheffield will end up 96 points plus.

I reckon there is a 152% probability that 18% of the posters on this thread are now 4/11 on at looking pretty daft.
If you extrapolate that up for the rest of the season it could easily end up with them being VERY daft.

If we are being realistic most of us thought that the 13 goalless draws would cost us top two.
But there remained a good chance - I had said above that I guessed it at 35%. Still feels right.
What this thread shows is why it is so vital to foe lots of posters on here - because the relentless negativity goes into overdrive. Then it can be quite a positive message board.

I don’t think the realism about our situation mid-Feb (5 points behind Sheff U and 7 behind Leeds) was the issue. At that point we probably were a fair bet for the play offs.
It was the certainty that form couldn’t change that was bizarre. It’s not as if Sheffield United’s late collapse this season is unique. Leeds did it last season and there’s been loads of examples in the past.
