Trump's comments re the popularity of Zelenskyy appear to have already backfired. More Ukrainians pledge their support for their President in the wake of Trump's assertion that Zelenskyy is not popular. From a non-Zelenskyy voter:
"Zelenskyy might be a son of a bitch; but he's OUR son of a bitch!"

Kash Patel has been confirmed FBI director. This is the man who pleaded the fifth has some interesting foreign connections and glorified the jan 6th rioters
The irony is that maga see the fbi as targeting conservatives and Donald trump and orchestrating a witch-hunt. And lo and behold within an hour of being confirmed Patel produces a list of names - democrats - generals - lawyers former trump 1st administration staff - who whistle blowers as members of the deep state . And informs them he will be seeing prosecutions… Kamala is also on the list .. explains why Biden issued the seemingly inappropriate pardons before he went. They knew it was coming.
With all the executive branches under his control and sycophants in key positions not to far fetched to say a coup detat has quietly taken affect in America with trump already suggesting he will run for a 3rd term thus breaking the 22nd constitution amendment. It’s how wannabe dictators get around the niceties of democracy.
22nd amendment :- No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

Nato (without the US) has roughly 4 times the airpower of Russia. With immediate effect close all USAFE bases, cancel all F35 contracts and put aircraft in the sky over Ukraine.

Re: Russia Invades
Trump is exactly what we expected, and as bad as it seems the more outrageous the better. As a wise man once said 'you can fool some of the people all the time........'
As in all dictators they have to be stood up to. I'm sure in his head he expects the whole world to give in to his outrageous demands. The best way to defeat him is to just alienate the US from our lives. We don't need them in NATO, they can't be relied on anymore. There's nothing we buy from them that we can't buy from China. The world needs to circle the wagons and show them that his dream of MAGA is only going to isolate them.
There'll obviously be countries that pander to him, but not enough to prevent him looking foolish on the home front. One day we'll look back on this as just a bad year in history.
We need to learn the lessons for the future and take the political bias out of the hands of a few tech billionaires.

Might be because his irresponsible words and actions are making a full scale war in Europe more likely than it has been since 1945!
History is repeating itself he sold out the ANA and he is doing it to the Ukrainians now.

That's the thing, he's burnt his bridges in a week. He'd not attack NATO and neither would Russia. Trump has had to back down on loads of things, he's very much a speak without thinking guy. I have no doubt some NATO members have no spine though. Just the same as Europe has been forced to come away from Russian energy it's the perfect time to come away from the US.alboclaret wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2025 10:30 pmLooking at this in a Totally hypothetical pov, what would be the options for trump if that were to happen.

Re: Russia Invades
By association Farage must be viewed as vaccuous as his american hero trump, farage stirs many pots, disappears for a while, and resurfaces when the going looks favourable.
The calibre of political mainstream thesedays is frankly putrid.
Personally I cant keep abreast of the details of all of this, It must be complex. But surely when the initial causes for this conflict have been poured over in years to come by historians, it must be apparent that putin , despite his rhetoric about feeling threatened by the proximity of NATO, is shown to be the land grabbing thug many of us assumed he was.
Thousands dead, and **** like trump posturing to the red neck hordes that adore this American farce.
It may well boil down to Europe mucking in and using its technological know how and industries to show a combined show of strength.
Im certain the economists here must know how to throw a spanner in the works for the tariff plans of trump.
Boycotting goods from the US, and avoiding travel for tourism will be a start.

Re: Russia Invades
This is the thing, countries rely on their trade, including the US. Trump believes he has all the cards, but everyone outside his the same problem, and the same solution. Trade deals will be much easier to make with each other, and at a lot less exorbitant cost. Because we are in the same boat, short term conditions can be set up so that everyone helps each other, and those smaller nations who might be more reliant on US trade get the help they need to redirect sales. China and the Middle East can provide as much technology as America, Trump could eventually be sat on the outside looking in.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2025 11:24 pmThat's the thing, he's burnt his bridges in a week. Re: Russia Invades
There could be opportunities in adversity. A change of tact for us towards a better trading relationship with Europe. A chance to increase spending on the military and rebuild a manufacturing base at home. A chance to fix the broken military covenant and do the right thing by our armed forces rewarding them for their service - something around housing post service and skills in service. Give asylum to US nationals in the medical and scientific fields being attacked by the US administration. None of the above should be particularly polarising politically. Labour need to avoid tax rises and point at the insecure environment as a reason to break their own fiscal rules. Could potentially argue that part of the mission is to uphold the international order creating more stable trading conditions. Starmer's meeting next week and the German election appear immensely important events for setting a more positive course.

Re: Russia Invades
sadly those in the medical field wont make anywhere near the same amount of money in the UK as they do here. I have a couple of friends who are both ICU nurses, they came over from the UK 3 years ago - in the UK they were earning around 40k, here they earn 90k ( British, I converted it from $ ) and pay far less in tax. Now imagine what the surgeon's must earn.......xxmunkyennuixx wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 2:26 amThere could be opportunities in adversity. Re: Russia Invades
After all the efforts after WWII to prevent tyranny, facism and dictatorships expanding their power, led by America, one orange man is attempting to undo it all. It's unspeakably sad and terrifying.
Worst of it is, I think it's partly down to laziness. He obviously has a love in with putin for whatever reason, but he also knows he has zero leverage against Putin. All he wants is a swift end even if that puts Europe in a potential war with Russia. All his levers of power are against his allies, levers predominantly put in place by the US as they declared themselves leaders of the free world.

Re: Russia Invades
I read an article a while ago from a military specialist who said it was a tactical mistake for Ukraine to invade part of Russia , they used elite troops which weakened their defensive front line and although Russia withdrew troops to fight them, psychologically people will defend their land more aggressively than they would defending stolen land.
Russia has the manpower plus North Korean cannon fodder to eventually seize back their land Ukraine doesn't to jold it.
No doubt there is a vounter argument to this, however as a bargaining chip, it doesn't appear to have worked.

Re: Russia Invades
This thread needs pulling. It is really hypocritical that it has been allowed to stay so long when other threads on current affairs either end up lasting a page or 2 or in some cases end up being permanently deleted with no evidence that they even existed. This thread has been going about 3 years
It always ends up being political with people blindly believing their 'trusted media source. Whatever side you may believe there will
always be someone who believes a different version of events. It often ends in derision and abuse.
Overall the mods do a great job keeping this forum in check. I suppose the only other option is to separate the forum into football and non football. I think this was discussed but decided against a few years ago.
At the end of the day our common theme is our love of Burnley FC. I sometimes chuckle and think have their been times I have wildly celebrated a Burnley goal with someone on here who holds different views to myself.
My personal belief is that we should keep all politics out of sport. This is across the board and includes taking the knee, rainbow laces, minutes silence for non football events, Remembrance Sunday or deaths of reigning monarchs etc. No exceptions.
I really enjoy some of the non football discussions and as most of you know my views are certainly not mainstream to any political ideology but maybe this forum should just be about football? Either that or show some consistency by not favouring certain posters or certain topics.
