Funny old game that. Started way off it and but for some awful finishing we’d have been chasing the game at half time.
Second half when we moved it quicker we had far too much.

Re: Sheffield Wednesday v Burnley - Player Ratings
A pretty ordinary 60 minutes livened up hy Edwards but a superb last 30 after the double change.
Trafford- 7 - a couple of shaky moments but cane through to make some key interventions.
Roberts - 7 - underwhelming in the first half but much better as the game went on.
Pires - 6 - some shaky moments but then some terrific touches too.
Egan-Riley- 8 - scrambled superbly again.
Esteve - 8 - a rolls Royce, again.
Cullen- 9 - for the second home game in a row, immaculate. A masterclass in pass and move football even when doing it on his own before the break.
Laurent- 6 - a little clumsy at times but he does add physicality.
Hannibal - 6 - not the presence he has been in recent weeks.
Edwards - 8 - took his goal wonderfully and carried a single handed threat in the first half that promised lots for the rest of the season. Not yet fully fit and that showed in the second half.
Anthony - 8 - very quiet for long periods but you can't argue with two assists and they were both terrifically precise final passes.
Flemming- 5 - struggled as the lone front man.
Foster - 8 - missed two great chances but gave us a direct threat and physicality we'd lacked that stretched the game and made us a completely different proposition.
Brownhill- 9 - as Foster made a huge difference and took his goal with aplomb.
A game we could easily have fallen behind in during a pretty ropey first 45 minutes, and we've played much better several times recently and ended up in tighter games. But after the double change on the hour we were a completely different proposition and if we can add to that a match fit Edwards and a confident Foster, there's a lot to like about the team that got us 3-0 up. A good night's work.

Trafford 6 bit shaky
Roberts 7 so so first half better 2nd, always plays well with the stick on tache.
Egan-Riley 7- steady ,moved it about
Esteve 8- great block ,smooth
Pires 6- nice touches but as a defender .. hmm
Edwards 8- great debut ,tricky and nice goal
Cullen 6- worked hard but a bit off I thought
Laurent 6 ok at short passes but a bit sloppy
Hannibal 5 - not at the races today
Anthony 7- good 2nd half
Flemming 6- fouled a fair bit , little service
Brownhill 8+ 1 for goal - nice impact
Foster 6 missed 2 chances though good to see him play as a CF

Hannibal 5 - been our best player recently, poor tonight, I want to see him deeper in his best role, next to Cullen.
Edwards 9 - superb goal, touch of real class. Far too good for this league.
Anthony 8 - 2 assists
Flemming 4 - zero service at all, given nothing to work with.
Benson 8 welcome back
Shelvey 6 should’ve had a superb assist
Foster 5 missed 2 sitters, no idea why he didn’t take the ball round the keeper for the 2nd and the first is an easy lob over the GK out of his area.

Poor first half. That can't be glossed over.
Second half we demonstrated why we're in touch with the top. It's like a switch is flicked.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Such a strange game to rate.
We were awful and lucky for an hour (until Brownhill and Foster came on) then ran out comfortable winners
Trafford 7
Roberts 6
Cj 7
Esteve 8
Pires 4
Laurent 4
Cullen 7
Hannibal 5
Anthony 6 (2 assists so inflated rating, but a manager without an infatuation with him would have had him off before that, i thought he was dreadful prior)
Edwards 7
Flemming 4
Foster 7
Brownhill 7
Special mention for Benny. So glad hes back. The exact reason he should have come on for Anthony last week at Preston was as seen today. Hes a goal threat and match winner off either wing

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Clearly we need to accommodate a player of Edwards' ability in the team, but equally clearly it caused a fair amount of disruption to the structure and patterns of play that we struggled with in the first half. Much better in 2nd half, particularly after the subs.
Trafford 7 - Unflustered as ever
Roberts 8 - Best right back in the league & it's not even close
Egan-Riley 7 - Struggled as much as anyone in 1st half
Estève 8 - Couple of good blocks
Pires 6 - A little chaotic at times. Nice ball to Anthony for 3rd goal
Cullen 8 - Makes it look easy
Laurent 5 - Struggled a bit tonight.
Edwards 8 - Dangerous whenever we got the ball to him
Hannibal 6 - Got dragged too deep, too often. Not his best night.
Anthony 7 - Took a while to get into the game but productive in final 3rd
Flemming 6 - Battled but largely ineffective. One day a ref might spot defenders dragging him around.
Brownhill 7 - Offers the goal threat that Hannibal doesn't
Foster 7 - Can't fault the effort, but lacks a striker's instinct

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Trafford 8 (Actually made a couple of crucial saves)
Roberts 7
CJER 8
Esteve 9 (Another wonder block when all seemed lost!)
Pires 7
Cullen 7 (I thought Wednesday made a conscious tactical decision to deny him space and time to collect the ball and it worked up to a point)
Hannibal 6
Laurent 6
Anthony 8
Flemming 5 (Just not in it!)
Edwards 9 (Outstanding!)
Brownhill 7
Shelvey 8
Sarmiento 7
Foster 6 (Should have scored!)
Benson N/A, (but absolutely fantastic strike!)
As others have said, wednesday were actually rather good and I was very impressed. How we went in at half time leading was mainly down to Edward's brilliance! Ultimately we took our chances and they didn't and as we saw (and rued) last week that's really all that it's about! In the end an enjoyable watch and although it's not always the case, Parker got his subs (timing and personnel) spot on this evening.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
For the first 20 mins some pi$$ed kid behind us was shouting ‘We’re at ******* home’ every 39 seconds. Very funny that he’d ****** off to the concourse when Edwards broke the deadlock.
Odd game as we didn’t get any kind of grip on the game until then and still made a meal of things early in the 2nd half but the two swung it right in our favour and our vastly superior quality told in the end with four simply excellent goals.
Trafford 8 another clean sheet and he had to do a decent bit of work for this one
Roberts 8 tried to make things happen and finished off a lovely move for his goal
Egan-Riley 8
Esteve 8 none shall pass
Pires 4 for an alleged forward-thinking full back he doesn’t half like going backwards
Cullen 9 another night runnin’ ting at the Turf and heavily involved in the goals
Laurent 6 in and out but improved second half and his physical presence was important
Hannibal 4 barely in the game tonight and the improvement when he was replaced by Brownhill was marked
Edwards 9 lol. Play on player.
Anthony 7 unfortunate to be shifted to the left where he’s less effective and he was way out of sorts first half. The move and his cross from the right for the second was toppers and he repeatedly the trick from the left soon after.
Flemming 5 constantly fouled with arms round his neck, shirt literally ripped off his back but we need more from him, despite that
Brownhill 8 turned the game, added the energy and spark we’d been missing, not to mention goal threat in behind the striker. Has to start there from now on.
Foster 7 along with Brownhill he added the impetus and his pace gives the likes of Shelvey a target over the top. Needs a goal but he’s getting in the right areas still.
Finally hit our straps and given someone a hiding, funnily enough when the manager wasn’t on the touchline. More of this please, said all along we’re good enough to do it to most of this division, just need to play like we are.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Trafford - 8 At least he had something to do tonight
Roberts - 7 Simple finish but overall a pretty decent showing
CJER - 8 Just a standard performance now
Esteve - 9 Not enough superlatives explain how good this lad is
Pires - 4 He’s a shocker of a footballer
Edwards - 9 He is going to be special
Cullen - 8 Mr Metronome
Laurent - 5 Poorest showing of the season for me
Hannibal - 6 Didn’t impose himself like usual
Anthony - 8 Not great 1st half but more than made up for it 2nd
Flemming - 5 I really want to like him but he doesn’t bring much
Brownhill - 8 Changed the game
Foster - 7 Another poor miss but showed more than Flemming
Shelvey - 7 He could be just as important to us than Edwards.
Sarmiento - 5 He doesn’t impress me
Benson - 8 I know he shouldn’t be scored but my word what a player

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
From tv
Trafford 7 some good saves but also a couple of iffy moments
Roberts 8 plus one for the goal. Very good attacking performance
CJ 7 as per usual
Esteve 8 another master class, he plays at a different pace with exceptional vision
Pires 6 still dodgy at the back
Laurent 6 lacks pace at the end he critical moments
Cullen 7 metronome
Hannibal 6 sometimes he tries too hard, plus he needs to keep his cool more than ever now
Anthony 7 first half he was a 5, improved greatly in the second and was on the spot for his assists
Flemming 6 I'm sick of saying that "he is not a centre forward"
Edwards 9mom his Messiesque goal lit up a drab first half when they could easily have scored three. He tired in the second but was always a threat
Foster 7 strong running always causes problems, if only he had scored
Brownhill 7 the game changed when he and Foster came on.
Our first half display was poor, lit up only by a magnificent goal by the Burnley Messi.
Parker made the subs early that changed the game totally. If we can maintain that second half level of performance, we are in for an exciting end to the season.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Trafford - 7 - Did what he had to do well.
Roberts - 7 - Like the team, a game of two halves.
Pires - 5 - He struggles every time I see him against pace and tonight was no exception.
Egan-Riley - 7 - Defended well. Passing was off first half, but back to his usual standards second half.
Esteve - 8 - As good as usual.
Cullen - 7 - Found himself a bit too deep for my liking first half, but massive improvement second half.
Laurent - 6 - Hit and miss.
Hannibal - 5 - Not one of his better games.
Edwards - 7 - Oozes class and a fantastic goal, but his lack of work off the ball might be a concern going forward.
Anthony - 8 - Once we remembered we had two wingers, I thought he was superb.
Flemming - 5 - Never really in the game.
Brownhill - 7 - Gave us a lot more energy in the attacking third.
Foster - 7 - Minus one for the miss, but thought his mobility and aggression was exactly what we needed and it helped change the game.
Funny game. Don’t think anyone has created that many chances at Turf Moor this season, but we also played some outstanding football in the second half.

Not as comfortable as the score suggests. Good job Wednesday didn’t have their shooting boots on in the first half, as we were back to our slowest for the first 35 minutes. However for once our subs made an immediate impact

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Trafford 8 - some solid saves and good distribution
Roberts 7 - too negative first half hence his “debate” with the JHL but improved and good goal instincts
Egan-Riley 8 - classy
Esteve 9 - bonus point for great blocks, you shall not pass
Pires 6 - harshly admonished, he did ok while not superb
Cullen 9 - key to us exerting our dominance as the game went on
Laurent 6 - the game bypassed him somewhat and lacks the quality of his peers
Hannibal 6 - looked a bit tired after his experience on Saturday
Anthony 8 - quiet and on the verge of poor but two excellent assists
Flemming 5 - our weak link, out of position and a false 9 works away but doesn’t at home
Edwards 9 - too good, and hopefully far more to come with fitness and teammate understanding
Brownhill 8 - 100+ Premier League appearances and it showed instantly
Foster 8 - excellent apart from the finishing
This was a “sending a message” result of the type Leeds have also been delivering (and have in their games also taken a while to get going at times). Sheffield United don’t deliver these results, hence their GD, and it really does feel like they are hanging onto 2nd.
It felt like a big moment, I’ve been around this stuff for decades now as have many of us, and it does feel big. The impact from Edwards is massive, the vital 2nd goal when he played a forward pass that all season we have seen go back. It isn’t just him either, Foster improved us up front, Benmy has magic if needed, CJ is starting to rampage forwards, Shelvey’s passing range couples well with Foster up front. It does feel like we have turned a corner.
Let’s not forget the stone wall penalties not given against PNE and Portsmouth, and today with Flemming’s ripped shirt. We haven’t had much luck yet, but it will come.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Benson's goal was worth the entrance fee alone. We looked so much better when Foster came on. Mainly because he stretched their defence. Combine that with Shelvey's long balls and we have a good plan B up our sleeve. Anyone know how long Humphries is out for?

A very strange game where for an hour Sheff Wed were the best team to play the Turf this season and were very unlucky not to have scored at least one goal. The introduction of Brownhill and Foster flicked a switch that they couldn't live with though. Brilliant to see the goals flying in at the end.
I still don't quite know what our best midfield and forward unit looks like, but Brownhill and Edwards have to play every week from now until the end of the season.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Trafford 7 Seems to have got into this punching out along the goal line on crosses. Odd but safe I guess.
Roberts 7 Good attacking and nice goal but a little shaky defending
Egan-Riley 7 Not his best but still a good prformance
Esteve 7 Goal saving block late on
Pires 6 Not great but he was up against a tricky customer in Gassama
(I’ve marked each of the back four down a point because they were at 6’s and 7’s the first hour.)
Cullen 9*** One of the most consistent midfield players I’ve ever seen at Burnley
Laurent 5 Not on song tonight and part of the defensive problems
Hannibal 5 Ditto.
Anthony 7 Didn’t think he gave as much cover to Pires as he normally does to Roberts but two great assists
Flemming 5 Takes a battering most games but I’m not sure who starts it and it leaves him pretty ineffective
Edwards 8 Super goal and other effort that hit the crossbar
Brownhill 8 Great finish and give us some impetus when he came on
Foster 6 Just not happening for him but it will if he keeps trying
So delighted for Benny!

Some pretty low marks floating about for a 4-0 win.
Are expectations and reality a little misaligned perhaps?

A strange game to rate. First half, we were playing too slow and our passing was not up to the required standard. Sheff Wed should have been in front before Edwards scored. Once half time and changes could be made, we looked a lot better but were susceptible to their attacks. Credit to Sheff Wed for giving it a go, but we had too much power and quality coming on from the bench and ran out worthy winners. Last night was Parker's best use of the subs - timing and impact wise. We will need to do this more often in the remaining games of the season. A word about Benson's goal. Top drawer. Moment of the season for me at the Turf. I did enjoy that. UTC.
