I've got a lot of sympathy for shoplifters as the majority have been let down by society and are just doing what they can to survive

Providing the don't use violence and threatening behaviour and stick to big businesses then good luck to them I say.

It's the corrupt and greedy super rich brigade that play the system and steal from us all that riles me but noone seems to care about that
I disagree with you here and I'm sorry that I do.

Our society has let many people down, however there are so many ways to get help that there is no need to go on the thieving.

I do give a **** about the super rich ripping is off for the taxes that would further benefit our less abled people, but nicking is never the right way to support yourself. Homeless in Manchester, many still have pride in who they are, without the need to steal.

All the above said, out country is in a bad state and the wimps in government are never going to sort it out as we are too namby pamby.

Do we all check our receipts at stores? last week I found 3 times that I had been robbed by merchants.

I bloody do, I check before my card goes near the payment as I've been bitten once and that griped me.

Stealing from supermarkets should be encouraged. Miserable pay and conditions and billions in cash.

Dent their profits where you can.

Anarchy is Michelle Mone stealing 200m from the country and sitting in the House of Lords, not some poor sod robbing a loaf of bred from the Co-op

Except these people are not nicking a loaf of Warbys Toastie to eat, they're people who think they are above the law helping themselves to anything they can carry or fit in their pockets.
I understand there are many with addictions, but this seems to go hand in hand with a general lack of moral compass

I bet you 90% plus of these people robbing from shops are below the poverty line whereas all these tax dodgers and corrupt bast*rds have money to burn. I know who my ire is aimed and I know where the police and courts resource would be best utilised and it ain't chasing poverty stricken shoplifters

DA's posts on this thread are the best example I've seen of a strawman argument in years. Pretty pathetic, even by his low standards.

Due to my job I am in and out of many hospitals..one in particular has a WH Smith concession in it. They are blighted by shoplifters who are nicking stuff to fuel drug habits. The shop staff have been told not to confront them…there are at least 5 ‘regulars’ known to them but due to the number of entrances and exits they know how to evade security….their favourite from there are “Grenade’ bars…retail for a couple of quid, sell them on the streets for 50p-£1….ten of them and that’s a ‘fix’…..despicable that anyone like DA can condone this….and from a hospital!!!!

Shops have had to tag various food stuffs for years, especially the meats
One shop in Burnley even started keeping their bacon in a fridge in their storeroom, because theft was so common and that was 15-20yrs ago

A lot of retailers state in their contracts that employees aren't allowed to stop the shoplifters and they will face a disciplinary if they do so
Yes people have been sacked for trying to stop shop lifters.
Last retail store I worked had was often targeted by a Romanian gang, who'd turn up in a car with Romanian plates on it so their registration couldn't be tracked in the UK

English oiks are just as bad for it though and as I've said it's always gone on, it isn't a recent thing

The police often haven't got the time and the same goes for the magistrates courts, such is the amount of work they've got

Whilst I wouldn’t condone shoplifting, stealing from a WH Smith in a hospital is not stealing from a hospital.

Spar on padiham road keep washing tablets behind the counter because sub humans were nicking them and obviously selling them for drugs

Can't believe people justify stealing from "big companies"

They can pay like the rest of us.

Need a bad batch of drugs to circulate, do us all a favour

Theft begins in my view the very moment you drive into a hospital car park people have enough to worry about without that on top.

If a “shoplifter” is challenged and they either threaten or use violence, they should be charged with robbery. That would be a deterrent

My apologies I misunderstood…I agree with you wholeheartedly re parking. My wife works nightshift at a major hospital in Newcastle and she has to pay £12 per shift to park even though she works 8pm until 8am when the car park is not in use for the public….
