Are expectations and reality a little misaligned perhaps?

Football games are best judged on their entirety . Preston wasn’t a 0-0, and Oxford wasn’t a 1-0, but people didn’t give credit for the workings in those games, just laid into the team.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 8:02 amWe were abysmal for 45 minutes - it wasn't a 4-0 game
This relentless negativity, of nothing ever being good enough is frankly ******* tiring. People willing to give low marks on the first half, rather than the full game. Score 4, keep a clean sheet, some cracking goals, miss other big chances…. And they get limited credit for it. Where’s the gratitude?

If players have a poor first hour and a really good last 30 mins you’d expect the results to be around the middle wouldn’t you??

Typical that we left after 93 minutes and missed Benny's goal!
That said, travelling back to Sheffield was a pleasant enough experience. Three home games in the last 2 seasons:
Sheffield United 5-0, Coventry 2-0, last night 4-0. You're welcome!
Nice to see you, briefly, Tony, by the way!

Wouldn't go that far. We were pretty awful up to the goal, better after it and then very good in the last 30.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
I watched Flemming closely last night. He actually spends far too much time becoming physically involved with the centre backs rather than trying to work out where the ball is going. They're not even battles that he's ever really going to win, there are some big old units in the Championship.quoonbeatz wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2025 11:47 pm
Flemming 5 constantly fouled with arms round his neck, shirt literally ripped off his back but we need more from him, despite that
He's not a natural no 9, and never will be.
Barnes would come away from these contacts with either the ball, or a free kick.

Trafford 7, some brave goalkeeping, despite not being really tested
Roberts 8-currently playing so well, and rarely misplaces a pass
ER 7-steady and sound
Esteve 8-showed his qualities again against a physical striker
Pires 6-he has skill, but not the discipline to be playing regularly for us in defence
Anthony 8-two great assists. This guy has given us 100% every game
Cullen 7
Laurent 6, thought Shelvey should have replaced him much sooner
Edwards 9-star performer in a half when we were so poor. This guy is the catylyst to us getting auto promotion, and must start
Hannibal 7
Fleming 5-offered very little tonight and now think its time for Foster to be starting in the No 9
Brownhill 7-back to his best

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
I agree entirely. But you're gonna struggle to average a team score of above 7 when the first half is that bad, no matter how the game finishes. I thought that first half was as bad as I've seen all season, and we could have been 3-0 down before Edwards scored. The last 30 mins will have pulled up those scores, but it shouldn't mask the previous 60dandeclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 8:22 amFootball games are best judged on their entirety . Overall I think team average of 6.5-7.5 would be fair

Yeah agree with this and it’s frustrating as I think he’s better player than needing to look to get involved like that, it’s not his game.dougcollins wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 9:13 amI watched Flemming closely last night. Flemm was a very good 10 for Millwall...many of their fans were puzzled at Parker playing him up top.
Im sure he's not become a poor player overnight.

I'm not sure it matters where he plays if he keeps getting the treatment he is getting. It's becoming a recurring joke, the number of times he's fouled by the defenders right in front of the ref and nothing happens, other than occasionally being mystifyingly penalised himself

He's not a poor player, but Millwall was about his level. With all due respect they aren't trying to finish in the top 2, which means winning a majority of games. If we'd had a striker up to that level then we would probably be closer to hitting that target.

He's shown that he's a very good player in this league. Doesn't matter which team he was playing for. At the game, I thought Sheffield Wednesdays “good spell” went on most of the half, but on reflection I’m not sure they were causing us the same amount of problems after about 20-25 mins. We’d started to nullify them and grow into the game after that.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 8:02 amWe were abysmal for 45 minutes - it wasn't a 4-0 game
Same with the second half, but their threat ended within the first 10 mins.

Spot on. We could have played well for 75 minutes but people will mark some players pathetically low for the 15 minutes we didn't perform!dandeclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 8:22 amFootball games are best judged on their entirety . It is becoming rather tedious ( and it's marks from the usual suspects week in week out too )

Awful first half and lucky not to concede. Edwards orovided the spark needed. Good subs and Brownhill offers a goal threat that others don’t. Another quality goal for Benson which should give him a huge lift after his injuries.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Trafford - 7 Bit busy tonight dealing with crosses mainly as the defence were superb with blocks
Roberts - 7 Decent game, but I really don't get how a right full back scores from there. Games moved on since my day.
Egan-Riley - 8 good in defence, long passing perhaps not quite up to his usual standard but that's nit picking.
Esteve - 9 Superb.
Pires - 4 Oh dear, the weak link last night.
Edwards - 9 Looked off the pace very early on, and seemed to tire late on. In between, sublime.
Cullen - 8 A very good performance, keeping the ball moving around.
Laurent - 6 Laboured performance
Hannibal - 6 Energetic but it was an "almost" performance.
Anthony - 7 Gets into some great positions and although he had 2 assists, strangely I expect more.
Flemming - 4 Woeful, the ball just doesn't stick when it's played up to him and he was guilty of an outrageous barge on their player when we were a bit under the cosh in the 2nd half. Deceptively slow.
Brownhill - 8 A reminder of what we were missing
Foster - 7 Looked refreshed, quick and energetic in his rightful position.
Shelvey - 6 Carrying some timber now, but he's not there for his tracking back and tacking, he's there for his superb passing like the one to set up Foster.
Sarmiento - 5 Not on for long, and didn't show much.
Benson - 7 Not on for long, but what a goal.
Roberts - 7 Decent game, but I really don't get how a right full back scores from there. Games moved on since my day.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
You have to give credit to Wednesday that thatey caused us problems. Parker alluded to it in his post match comments. Plus getting Edwards into the shape changes things as well.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 8:25 amIf players have a poor first hour and a really good last 30 mins you’d expect the results to be around the middle wouldn’t you??
It's not ******* FIFA game football.
Overall Wedneaday looked a good outfit but ultimately we shut the door on them and then moved up a gear to blow them away. An excellent performance all round. Nobody should be on less than 6, maybe even 7.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Nonsense. None of those Wednesday chan es are anywhere near as clear cut as the ones we created 2nd half. On a good day they'd maybe convert one of them.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 10:40 amI agree entirely. But you're gonna struggle to average a team score of above 7 when the first half is that bad, no matter how the game finishes. I thought that first half was as bad as I've seen all season, and we could have been 3-0 down before Edwards scored. The last 30 mins will have pulled up those scores, but it shouldn't mask the previous 60
Overall I think team average of 6.5-7.5 would be fair
We've conceded 9 in 34 games for a reason. And ut isn't luck

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
It's absolutely down to some luck. I'm not saying we haven't been defensively superb. But we could and probably should have conceded a few more. 2 definitely last night that I expected to hit the back of the net. Offside goal against Preston that wasn't offside. 2 penalty saves against Sunderland (although admittedly unlucky to have conceded those 2, but could easily have conceded others that weren't given in other games)BabylonClaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 2:19 pmWe've conceded 9 in 34 games for a reason. Anyone who thinks we played well last night in that first half is kidding themselves. Edwards scored a goal befitting of a better league. And hit the bar with what I believe to be a poor cross. I'll agree with the penalty shout. That's a definite penalty - although as I've been saying for weeks, Flemming could be shot and the ref would probably still give a foul against him.
Sheff Wed completely outplayed us for 35 minutes. They just didn't take their chances, and once we'd gone in front it completely changed

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Granted we didn't create a lot and as I said you have to credit Wednesday for the way they aggressively pressed to turn over the ball in the middle. But to say we were lucky not to be behind at half time I think is stretching jt. I watched the game back last night once I got back and those chances were not even as good as the ones we created against Preston. On the game you think k - woah they should have scored there but watch it back without the edge and you see how well we set up defensively and stopped theor chna es.
Both of Fosters big chances were way better than any of the o es that fell to Wednesday all game.
Going forward first half we struggled, they caused us problems - that's down to them playing well.

And I would say they were the better side but wouldn't say they completely outplayed us

Except the chance that Armstrong put wide early in the game was v similar to both the Brownhill and Roberts goals.BabylonClaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 22, 2025 2:19 pmNonsense. Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Not really - there are players round him in the 6 yard box and so the goal he can actually aim at is a lot smaller.similar but harder than Roberts. A bit harder than Browny's. And that's the only pme
But all this talk that they could have e been out of sight is rubbish

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Trafford 7 : Had a little more to do than usual thanks to the rest of the team. Made one very good save from a deflected shot.
Roberts 9 : I thought this was up there with his best performances. The one-two off Trafford’s legs in the first half was remarkable. True he didn’t venture forward in the first 45 but then the everybody bar Edwards lacked attacking intent. The goal was well deserved.
CJER 9 : In addition to his rock-like defensive he gave us one of his long surging runs.
Estève 9 : Defensively speaking he really can’t do too much better. He could, and should, look to play more ambitious passes. Oh, and score. But otherwise the man is a joy to watch. £20m, Mr Levy? Really?
Pires 5 : Just a long, long way behind Bashir. There were a few good things but I don’t feel comfortable with him playing.
Cullen 8 : The best of the central midfielders who started. Tried his best to turn the tide in the first half and was rewarded by his assist. Was able to play with more time after the second goal and goal. played a role in the third
Laurent 7 : I like JL and he has been a good signing for us. When he plays, his main role is defensive and his presence helps protect our back five. But he isn’t often good enough to help protect our goal and push us forwards.
Hannibal 6 : Not as good as of late. Occasional signs of class along with the graft but not enough going forwards.
Edwards 9 : MOM Stunning first half. Talk about a vital goal. He does what none of our other wingers does ie take his man on, dump him on his backside and create panic. Clearly keen to show what he can do in his spell here. Let’s hope he stays fit.
Flemming 6 : It just doesn’t work in that position in that formation. I like him but he’s not in the right position.
Anthony 8 : Defended well as he almost always does but tonight he set up two goals. Brownhill was there to tap it in but he deserves enormous credit for setting it up.
Subs :
Brownhill 8 : Did what he’s been doing a lot this season. Virtually killed the game within a minute of joining the fray.
Foster 7 : Thought he looked confident. Desperately wanted his shot to go in.
Shelvey : excellent cameo playing deep and making a series of raking passes. Brings us something else.
Benson : Can’t give him a rating but incredible return.
I’m coming round to thinking the long run without conceding is a burden. Wednesday gave it a good go but I think we would have turned things around had they scored.

Re: Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday - Player Ratings
Trafford 8 - had a bit more to do than usual and did it very well
Roberts 8 - good game
Egan-Riley 8 - passing a bit more hit and miss than usual but still class. Speaking of class…
Esteve 9 - he is ridiculously good at defending. His anticipation and positioning on another level.
Pires 5 - rough first half, but did improve
Cullen 8 - kneaded everything together as per
Laurent 5 - just don’t think he quite has enough, quite sloppy on occasion
Anthony 8 - can frustrate, but has a wonderful first touch and two v good assists
Hannibal 6 - not one of his better games but still buzzed around effectively
Edwards 9* - box office. this boy could be the difference maker. He will absolutely terrify Championship defences.
Flemming 5 - huffed and puffed to little effect
Brownhill 8 - showed his quality
Foster 7 - did well up top and I’d like to see him there now
Special mention for Benson who has already assured his place in Clarets history but showed last night that he still has it. Great moment.
